When was that in 1967 ?.
mostly early 70's to mid eighties. that's a long time ago. I weighed around 180 at the time. now at 69 I still way 180. so 40-50 years zero net gains. :D

Tell us about how you deadlifted over 500 lbs

The workout structure
one workout every other week on deadlifts. would start with 135 and  do 20 reps than jump to 225 12 reps, 315 8 reps, 405 4 reps than do single reps adding 50lbs per set 2X25 lb plates till failure. this was when I was in college. there was one guy who I used to lift with , he could do 405 at 198 lbs bdwt, I weighed 180 at the time. He told me that when he comes back after summer vacation that he would do 600 lbs plus. he did it using just d-bol in 3 months. I don't think deadlifting over 500 lbs is no big deal. when I was in high school a 125 lb girl I knew did 315 lbs the first time she ever tried lifting. my best lift was using an olympic bar and pressing for several reps my two younger twin cousins who weighed in the low 100 range at the time. that one was on film 8mm . ;D  I should try it now they are both over 200 lbs now. ::)

pretty much same as above which quite frankly is rather pedestrian. I think members on here would be much more interested in learning how you became a champion, kind of like a blueprint for success. give us your exact routines exercises, sets and reps weights used, diet and drug cycles. some of the younger members would probably like to emulate you and achieve your greatness.

Not too different from my experiences. I got into dead lifting in my 20s and came up with a simple routine based on how I recovered. I found I was not able to max out each week - it was too hard on my spine. I had a very simple workout of once a week doubles and singles, working up to a single max every two weeks. On the off weeks I would only go to roughly 60-75% of my max for 1 or 2 reps.

I eventually reached 450 and called it quits. I didn't like how it made my back feel and I felt the dead lift really didn't do anything for me, physique wise. I weighed in the mid 180s and it was all drug free.

Used to stop at 405 and hit 12-15 reps on dead’s

weeks after the 2005 Arizona open I deadlifted 495 for 3

Then fucked a 18 year old several hours later same day

Also in this time period I benched 405 for 2

The post contest rebound is a nice thing

I was weighing 205-210 at this time a few weeks after my contest weight of 191

And eventually got back to 238

do you think the deadlifts actually helped you body wise? or looking back in retrospect do you think you would be better served subbing another exercise. I later subbed hack squat like reverse dead lifts inside a power rack and felt it gave me better results in my nobody, nothing workouts.

I only deadlifted because of king Ronnie inspired me

I do think it helped me yes

But pure bodybuilding wise no

I’d had been better off concentrating on width

I had plenty of depth

Width was all I lacked in comparison to a top 5 USA guy cause they were usually shorter

And I didn’t want to be a heavyweight and ruin my lines and condition

I would have just gotten wider instead of stronger in retrospect to answer your question

But I still met my goal so I’m happy

What got you started lifting weights, I remember you saying you started very young? most old timers on here were inspired by steve reeves and the old hercules movies.

Wow...Excellent lifting!  My best DL was an impromptu one at the gym with 505 lbs. The guys (all powerlifters) took the weights I was going to use for squatting and said I could have it if I could deadlift the thing.   I did it (kinda barely, LOL!) then walked with it to the squat rack (maybe 8 or so feet) and set it in the lower tier, got under it and did a bottom position squat with it then racked it on the top and took off enough to begin my 20 rep routine.  That nearly killed me. ;D

I miss those lads.  They were all much older than me at the time and are now all gone.  They were the gentlemen that taught me about J.C. Hise and the milk and 20 rep breathing squat routine that changed my physique.

now we're getting into some iron history 20 rep squats followed by a set of pullovers to increase the ribcage.

I was inspired to start age 9

My dad brought home the movie commando from the video store

Back when you had to rent the vcr too cause it wasn’t common for everyone to have one at the time

I watched it and I was soon saving my paper route money to by a 110 set at a store in California called

BEST

The rest is history

I didn’t actually compete until several years after college sports at the age of 24

I Won my first show as a middleweight and I was hooked after that

Then finally met my goal at 38 years old as a light heavyweight and overall winner

Since then I haven’t touched a weight seriously in 5 years

Now I have a golf goal

Life is very good

Well golf is something that just fell into my lap

After moving to Florida

I went out to many places and met great groups of people

They invited me to come play golf

That turned into the director of golf training me

Now all the old men “ sharks “ love me and like my new blood and enthusiasm

Then I watched the club championship a few weeks ago

Literally stood there watching them finish on 18 and looked at the leader board scores as they wrote them down and I shook the hands of the top 3

Manifesting myself into their position

My coach saw this

He knows I want to win

And if I win he wins

This is why I like it

I can be the student not the teacher

And I’m very much wanting to succeed for him and myself

My currency is athleticism and confidence

It opens any door and pays any tab

Life is good

I never got into golf but my twin cousins see story above were both golf pros. they used to design golf courses and such, and my cousins kid is one of the top high school golfers in pa shoots in the low 70's.

Nice thing about golf

Great clothes

Great atmosphere

Being out in nature

Don’t need weights

Don’t need a diet

Just stretching

And repetition

And did I mention great atmosphere?

Affluence and power and intelligent people

Unlike the basement dwellers here

Not including mayday

Maybe the only intelligent person here
