The whole card/comic industry is a scam to induce people to create fake scarcity and cause people to overpay for common items and pay more for common items that are ‘rated’ or ‘certified’.

An original piece of art’s value is its scarcity. It’s a one of a kind. Some of these baseball cards like Ken Griffey Jr were printed millions of times. Who on earth believes that a common Griffey rookie is worth $1 on eBay but a GM10 rated is worth $10k?? It’s a total scam.

The rating industry thrives on making you pay $100 to have your $1 card ‘certified’ to induce you into thinking you can sell it for 10k.

As everyone here has said, as soon as you try to actually sell something, there’s no buyers. Only scammers trying to get your entire collection for pennies.

Collecting comics/card=Scam. Hard pass.

They got smart with cards years ago, by basically equating with your artwork explanation.

Many of the top cards of the past 15-20 years are usually serial numbered. There are actually 1/1 cards that exist these days. Those are usually the holy grail of card collections. Imagine getting a Michael Jordan, or a Tom Brady 1 of 1?

Those are the cards that usually sell for huge money. The Eli manning rookie card that I sold for $325 dollars was numbered to only 25. The Peyton and Eli dual auto was numbered only to 50.

These aren't your daddies cards anymore. They give you autographs, pieces of game-worn jerseys, serial number many of them to prove scarcity, 1/1 printing plates etc...

So yes, you can actually get a card these days that is a one of a kind

Like I mentioned earlier,I could possibly be better at grading a comic than the employee who is grading yours that works at CGC for 65 bucks or more.

Of course the graded one has the potential to fetch  thousands depending of course on what it is, while mine, though in better condition but ungraded, gets purchased for a fraction of what it`s actually worth.

Fucking scam is right.

I know 2 people who buy cards online, then send to an authenticator, who grades them and sends back.

Then the cards either go up or down in value, and they resell.

It's like gambling.

All collectables are like gambling...

Cards have gone up thousands of percent over the last year. Its now being reported that this is now a method of laundering money. Im not too sure of details, but by the sounds of it someone buys a card at a card show for cash, then sells it on ebay, rarely losing money on the sale, and in comes the clean cash

Isn't that a normal business? Like I said (and others) it's both gambling and the stock market. The whole point for many people is buying a card to sell for profit down the line. How is that money laundering? You buy something legally, and sell it for a profit somewhere else.

That's what the top end of every hobby does these days.

Im just going by what you said in your post. I know that real money laundering comes from fake businesses, and fraudulent bankers, who are willing to participate.

I watched Wolf of Wall Street, and Scarface.

My cousin had cards worth thousands of dollars and his house burnt to the ground a few years ago. He was completely devastated. Lesson learned i guess for him.

I was never into collecting cards, i collected comic books that were rare when i was a kid and still have a few. Nothing worth that much, but in 20-30 years i bet.

I have several autographed baseballs, footballs, jerseys, bats, etc. I can't remember all of them, but off the top of my head, Barry Sanders, OJ Simpson, Earl Campbell, Ken Griffey jr, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Nolan Ryan, Jose Conseco, JJ Watt, Tom Brady, Warren Moon, etc. I have several more that i don't remember. They are all in a climate controlled storage unit. No idea what they are worth.

One of my uncles worked in merchandise marketing throughout the 80's up to the 10's. He gave me all these over the past 20 years because he doesn't have any sons. He still has hundreds in his collection.

At one point i had 3 Roger Clemens signed baseballs, but they aren't worth too much so i have given them away.

I saw a comic book yesterday on Ebay............"Near Mint Condition".....$12.99............same book similar condition but graded a 9.3 by CGC................guy was asking $699.99 for it.

I just put my head in my hands and sighed.

If there is an idiot that exists out there that would pay that, I`d shoot him in the face if I knew him....................T WICE.

I see that type of shit all the time on Ebay

Yes! Now you get it. In an auction setting, some people will pay outrageous prices, just because they have the money, and want the item.

Auction. It's the ultimate piss match.

for proper perspective click the sold square on the left side of ebay. Anyone can ask anything they want, the sold items are the true numbers.

I agree, but sometimes it doesn't matter. Set a Buy It Now price, that is already at a profit, then let the auction begin.

Either someone will pick your Buy it now (For a profit) or there will be a battle between sellers, at the buzzer.

It's like a Mecum auction show.

Not a baseball fan, but back in 1988 an old friend of mine gifted me a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan Rookie Card.

Not really appreciating the value behind it, as I was never a fan of the sport, I gifted it to the son of a close friend who was into the Yankees. The kid was 10 years old when I gave him the card. A few years back, I heard he managed to sell it for over $20,000.

Amazing how much value those cards tend to accrue.
