Real Estate prices are comparable to what they are in the Portland Metro area according to Zillow and Redfin. The cost of living is 30% higher than the national average in Portland while in Palm Springs, it is only 20% - 25% higher. Here it is cold and wet 9 months out of the year, instead of hot and dusty. Take your pick. Oh, and Portland is also gay friendly. LOL!
What I take from your post is that gay friendly cities are miserable.

It is not surprising that you came to this conclusion despite that there was nothing in my post suggesting gay friendly cities are miserable. Quite the opposite.  One of the reasons the cost of living is high in a city is because people with good incomes choose to live there. The greater the demand for goods, services and housing is, the more those things cost.

The median household income in Palm Springs was $71,979 in 2023 https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/in/Palm-Springs

The median household income in Portland OR was $88,792 in 2023 https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/in/Portland

According to Numbeo, the quality of life in Palm Springs CA is slightly lower than Portland Or.

Contributor: We still rely on gasoline. Why is California adding to the cost and the pollution?

California is a state of contradictions. We lead the nation in environmental regulation, tout our clean energy goals with pride and champion a rapid transition away from fossil fuels. Yet despite this green image, our economy — and daily life — still very much run on oil and gas.

Fossil fuels account for roughly 8% of California’s $3 trillion economy — but that’s the first 8%. “If you don’t get that first 8%,” I tell my students, “You don’t get the rest of our economy.” Oil powers everything from trucks to tractors to construction equipment. Without it, you can’t build roads or bridges or get goods to grocery stores. Without refined petroleum products, you don’t make cement, steel, plastics or even the lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles.

Despite these realities, California energy policy is leading to the dismantling of the critical infrastructure that supports this essential system. Our state has lost more than 30 refineries in the last few decades. We are now down to just nine major gasoline-producing facilities, and two more are scheduled to close in the coming months, Phillips 66 in Los Angeles and Valero in the Bay Area. Those two plants represent 284,000 barrels of daily production and account for nearly 18% of the state’s total refining capacity.

Yes, more democratic policies at work. While people like Necrosis cry about Trumps jobs numbers but won't bother to look at who is destroying the job market.

Unfortunately, from the onset, Los Angeles was designed and zoned to be a sprawling metropolis because there a preference for suburban single family homes and land development boomed in the early 20th century when both public and private transportation rapidly became more readily available. This mindset continued for decades. In the mid 1950's my parents bought a house (junior weekend ranch) on an acre in Encino, California which likely cost no more than the one on a small lot in West Los Angeles they sold to move 17 miles away via Sepulveda Canyon which became the 405 freeway by the 60's.

So you are correct, today Californian, is a state of many contradictions. It is more dependent on mostly personal transportation than other states in a time when oil and gas has become less available. I remember when there were oil wells in Beverly Hills behind Smokey Joe's barbecue. My dad liked to say that every pump represented .05 cents. At that time gasoline was less than .25 cents a gallon.

California is a good example of the meaning of the saying, what we sow, so shall we reap.

The US actually produces more oil than ever.  It's CA that's been stepping on a rake for decades.

Interesting: US gas production has more than halved through 2023, so the balance has to be imported.  Of course, only from friends and allies.  ::)

Gas use seems to have peaked and is dropping off.

Newscum has been running refineries out of CA as fast as he can. He's trying to destroy CA as much as possible before he runs for president. Everyone needs to remember what a scumbag this guy is and vote for anyone other than him.

5 years ago he issued an EO banning the sale of gas-powered cars in CA starting in 2035.  He'll be long gone from CA politics by then, but imagine him as POTUS.

And he has jazz hands on bath salts.  ::)

You obviously don't live in CA.  Can my family and I move into your basement?  :D

Yes, on hold, and CA is suing to reinstate the ban.

CA produce less electricity today than in 2005, yet we're supposed to buy only EVs starting in 2035?  Electricity costs would skyrocket.

You got around and so did I. I moved to Southern California when I was 8 years old. Over the next 16 years of living in Southern California, L.A. County is the only one I lived in. But in various cities, in this order, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, West Los Angeles, Encino, and Woodland Hills. After my 18th birthday I lived in Santa Monica, back to West Hollywood, then Hollywood (Laurel Canyon), Studio City, West Covina, West Hollywood again and finally Granada Hills.
