Pacific NW heat records expected to be shattered
« on: June 26, 2021, 05:31:05 AM »
https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2021/06/25/pacific-northwest-heat-wave-seattle-portland/

Quote
Forecasters at the National Weather Service had previously predicted temperatures in Seattle would peak in the mid- to upper 90s on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. But they’ve since increased forecast highs to 98, 102 and 105 degrees during the three-day stretch, each of which would break the existing monthly record for June (96 degrees).

The forecast highs above 100 on Sunday and Monday in Seattle would mark only the fourth and fifth instances of triple-digit heat in 76 years of records, while a high of 105 would exceed the city’s highest temperature recorded of 103. Seattle’s average high at this time of year is in the mid-70s. It’s never seen even three days in a row at or above 90 in June, much less a trio in the upper 90s and low 100s.

“If you’re keeping a written list of the records that will fall, you might need a few pages by early next week,” tweeted the Weather Service in Seattle.

Portland is forecast to see a high of 109 on Sunday, 2 degrees above its highest temperature on record, with highs of 104 and 105 on Saturday and Monday.
...
Because of the intensity and duration of the high temperatures, heat-related illness is a major concern throughout the Pacific Northwest. The problem is compounded in an area where the population isn’t accustomed to such heat, especially so early in the season, and many residents lack air conditioning.

Two-thirds of the Seattle area and nearly one-third of Portland homes lack air conditioning. In fact, Seattle is the least air-conditioned metro area in the United States, according to the Seattle Times.

Another scorcher rolling in this weekend!!  :o :o

I had no idea about the lack of AC.  Could be dangerous for the elderly and infirm

Yep, just like most of the southwest- an artificial oasis for the most part. The growth in AZ and Nevada has always been unsustainable. It's just a matter of time before water shortages send them backwards in population.

Same. Anything above 24C is annoying. And the sun beating down is also annoying. Prefer spring and autumn for that reason and winter and snow is nice for a change too.

Me too.  I have never understood the infatuation with summer.  Scorching heat, lots of storms, mosquitoes, biting flies, giant spiders, no good sports to watch like football, etc, etc.  I'll take the fall and winter any day.

It is really rare that the temperatures climb much higher than 80% around here. The average daytime temperature for June is 73° with an average nighttime low of 53°. Fortunately for me and my family, we have dual air conditioning units. One for each level. The inside temp is set at 74° and that is exactly what it is right now. We'll see what happens if it goes to 111° outside tomorrow. I'm running the irrigation each morning starting at 5:30 a.m. Might need to run it again in the evening. 5:00 p.m. is usually the hottest part of the day.

What's this Celsius shit?  We use Fahrenheit.

Also, there is no water shortage.  There's a huge swath of coast land and tons of ocean water.  Desalinization plants powered by nuclear plants would set this right.

I am. I looked at the reading on the remote thermometer at 3:00 pm and it read 119° F. The transmitter is under the eves located where the wall doesn't get sun on it. I immediately checked the weather temperature on my phone and supposedly was 111° F. It is supposed to be 113° F tomorrow and could soar to 115° F. This is crazy hot. So hot that it has broken the record for the all time high temperature in Oregon which was 107° F in 1965 and 1981.

It is even too hot for my dog who loves hot weather....hot being more like 85° F, when she begs to go outside so she can lay on the hot patio. She stood by the back door asking to go out today. Finally I opened the door, she went out, immediately stopped, flipped a U turn and ran back in all within about 30 seconds. fortunately she had not gone far enough to burn her little paws on the concrete pavers.

I checked and a lot of the plants outdoors aren't looking too good. The hydrangeas look specially stressed. I've given them plenty of water early this morning and then again by hand this afternoon, but this heat is just too much for them. Hope is starts to cool down soon or I lose some of them.

I may have to fly down to Huntington beach and camp out at Coach's ocean front place.

A couple of finches made a nest in a hanging plant located on the west side of the house under a 4' overhang. The first of the 5 eggs hatched just before the heatwave hit last week. I kept misting the plant and checking the nest and the hatchling was okay on Saturday. Yesterday it was dead. Basically at 116°F the tiny baby bird was cooked as likely are the rest of the eggs. Sad. Mamma bird has been checking the nest all day. Did you know that birds morn the death of their young? Not sure what happens next. Will she clean out the nest and try again?

Several plants' leaves are also fried. On one plant, the leaves are a black a charcoal. I should have moved it to a shady location after the Japanese maple which split in the ice storm awhile back had to be cut down. Everything growing to the north of that tree was meant to be planted in the shade and is now in full sun.

It was in the low 90's today. After yesterday, it felt downright chilly. I think it is supposed to be in the high 80's to low 90's the rest of the week. At least it is cooling down at night. Crazy weather we are having. This is so unlike the norm this time of year. Most years we hope for sun on the 4th of July. Speaking of which, all fireworks are banned this year because everything is so dry right now. Sadly the police will not be enforcing the ban according to the Oregonian. Next up....Portland's on fire....like a real fire....not just a dumpster fire lit by some BLM punks.

Sad to hear about the bird  :'( at least you tried.  The heat is severe but like you say, having it come this early is especially devastating.

Canada's hottest days on record:

- Today: 49.4°C (120.9°F)
- Yesterday: 47.5°C (117.5°F)
- Sunday: 46.1°C (115°F)
- 1937: 45°C (113°F)

Yeah a lot of people also don't have AC as they are used to a more moderate climate in the Pacific Northwest. Heat waves like this kill old people all the time who don't have AC in Europe. People are going to start dying from this heat. Prime is actual in a high risk considering his age. It is not a joke 117 degrees will kill people plants animals etc we will see mass migrations out of the area if it continues. Habitable cities will become uninhabitable as all the concrete and glass makes cities even hotter. Is this due to manmade climate change or just a natural cycle who knows doesn't really matter why it's 120 degrees outside. If it's 120 degrees outside it's time to start looking for a new place to live.
