My reasoning on the 2 min / 1 min thing....
We're talking grip strength. I feel that testing heavier should be earned. Sort of like a deadlift ladder. Also, if your grip is good, there should be no reason you can't at least get to the 185# bar. The 1 min break should be enough to recover somewhat to continue.
Sure you could reduce to 1 min...I just think 2 min is a good chunk of time to show how long your grip can last.
I like doing bearhug holds with sandbags to strengthen low back...great contest with someone
