The important thing to grasp, we are all different. One of my training partners used to be a lanky B-Ball type guy. We was strong as F and always frustrated that I was getting jacked so fast while he was not. Yeah, when you are not 6 3" skinny guy you are not going to grow same as 5 8" guy doing the same shit. He wanted to keep playing B Ball and all that running - he could never get more mass on his frame. Similarly - for me losing fat was a hard endeavor and always a struggle.
So you have to experiment with different rep ranges, programs, etc. When you find out what works go for it.
