;D

Strength in the sense of weight lifting has nearly nothing to do with punching power. Back in his prime Joe Frazier couldn't push press 170 pounds over his head but his left hook was deadly.

Power is a separate entity from strength.  I bet Mayweather couldn't bench 225lbs.  When I train at the commercial gym in town the owner is a black belt in karate and owns a separate dojo. He does hang a heavy bag in his weight gym for when he feels like getting bag work in.  I can't count how many times I have had to suppress laughter as a 400lbs plus bencher hit the bag like a girl with pillow punches. Same concept as a guy who squats a million pounds. If he sprints like a slug he is strong but not powerful. Olympic lifting should be called power lifting and power lifting should be called strength lifting.

That lift I just posted of Joe is actual "weightlifting" as it is using leg/hip drive. Punching power comes from form/technique and torque. And yes, most "bodybuilders" are muscle bound clods who could not punch their way out of a paper bag :D

Yep, that's how boxers train, interesting seeing the barbell squats though.

Holyfield once explained that if boxers are not careful, weightlifting can hurt a boxers technique and even knockout ability, because boxing is amazing muscle memory, slipping and countering, it takes years to develop, and he said when you bench press you are supposed to go all the way down, but in that position you would be pulling your arm back too far before the explosive movement. Boxers want to throw straight punches, not cock back like a bar fight. At the highest level, a great boxer can see your arm slightly start to go back before a power shot, so they train to throw without cocking back too much to not telegraph, and the bench press develops different motor skills in relation to power. Most good boxing weight trainers incorporate weighted movements similar to the actual boxing movements.
