I saw Ken Shamrock in person in 1999/2000. He looked like he could probably do a few reps with 365 on bench.

Shamrock. But only if Hankins doesn't get to Iron Mike first.

That would actually be a close call. A prime Shamrock circa 1996 might be able to get a fast takedown and end it. But I have a feeling that Mike might be able to get back to his feet.

Not. Even. Close.

Nice guy, though. Met him in the late-‘90s.

I didn't meet him, but I know who his gear dealer was when he was in the WWF.  Him, and my other friends got backstage and partied with him and a few other wrestlers.  I was pissed, bcuz I didn't get an invite since I was working.  My friend knew I was into WWF.  Shamrock was the only guy he knew who it was from MMA, but by the description he gave me I think two were the Road Warriors, one I'm not sure of, and the other was Godfather.  Said Shamrock was fucking nuts, and couldn't get enough coke in him.  So I guess at his biggest with a few lines maybe it's possible ???......but I'd believe 495 for a double more so than 600 for a single.

I've met a lot of those guys when I worked at Gold's.  Some have been a major let down as people, and as far as strength.  Others, like Warlord, British Bulldog, and Crush were cool, and throwing around some crazy weights.  Warrior was a really cool dude as well.  Talked to him for like a half hour while he was getting his laundry done across the street.  Said it was his off day training, but rather sit in the gym and wait with no one bugging him for autographs at a laundromat.  I was working the front desk, and just asked him where they were going next, and he told me Brown County Arena.  I asked, "as in the one in GB, WI?"  He said yeah, and just started chatting from there.  Dude was nothing like the crazy interviews you've seen of him after his wrestling days.  Very chill, and super nice guy.

One thing that's funny, is that even though it's fake, everyone else was partnering up driving rentals.  He was "champ" at the time, and a limo took him to the laundromat across the street, and then drove him 100 yards to the front of the gym for him to wait.  Gotta keep up the image I guess.

Not a chance in hell. Ken is a little insecure imo. He'd be lucky if he hit 405.

Tank is the only guy from the early days that I know of who was a 600lb bencher..

Warlord, Bulldog, Crush … Yeah, a few known to be brutal strong.

Thanks for writing all that. Fun to read.  :)

At his fully-gassed, I’d give Ken perhaps two or three with around 405, yeah.

Thanks for writing all that. Fun to read.  :)

I've posted stuff about those 3 in the past.  Warlord is the biggest bbing type physique I've seen in person.  I short so am a bad judge of height, but I'm guessing 6''3"+.  I did ask him what he was weighing and he said around 320.  I swear that dude's traps went up to the bottom of his ears.  I was just a young gym hand in HS so I had to re-rack people's weights, and they talked to me a bit in between their sets.  Bulldog asked me if I wanted to go to the show, and after telling him "hey, I'm a hs kid making min wage...can't afford it".  He asked if I had I ride if I could go...told him yeah...he told me to go put my name on a piece of paper and show up with whoever I wanted to bring at the "will call" window.  I didn't even know wtf that meant.  Got there, and asked security where this will call window thing was, walked up, said my name, and she said "some huge dude left these for you".  Fucker gave us like section of the ring like only 5 rows back.  The funny thing is him and Warlord trained together for the two days they were here, and ended up wrestling each other that night....so they do break character in public as far as hating each other.

I know Warlord got busted a couple years later importing juice from the UK, and got prison.  Never seen him again.  Bulldog came through once more, and I went over to thank him for hooking me up last time they were in town.  He didn't remember my name, but he remembered me working there and asked if he did a good enough job with the seats?  I said fuck yeah, I thought you were going to have us in the bleachers if you even remembered to have them for us at all.  He told me he was glad I liked the show, and go write my name down again for the show that night......said I had to spot him first though. Fair deal.  Beverly Brothers did the same another time.  Basically anyone on the staff that talked to them got free tickets.

Ed Connors was part owner of the Gold's locs we had here.  I assume he knew Vince as we were instructed to always let them train for free while they were in town.

Actually met Ed once.  Kinda weird story there, but he was a nice guy, gave me his cell phone, and told me anytime I visited CA I had a place to stay, and that my boss/co-owner told him I was great at my job (this was years later when I was doing sales/ assistant manager), and if I ever moved to CA that I would have a job waiting.  I knew "things"....I know you do to.  Many things said aren't true, but still enough to make me not consider either offer.

Thanks for the reply and compliment.  I enjoyed many of your stories, and articles growing up, so kinda cool to hear you enjoyed one of mine.  Always thought you were one lucky bastard (well deserved though) to have landed that gig, and be around the craziness back then.  8)

I think it would be cool if you did a thread talking about how you met RK, and got the job, along with some stories you couldn't put in the mag.

maybe 365 for 5 reps when he was in his bulking phases and water logged in that era. I remember him wearing the workout baggy pants. Those were the days.

I'm only 5'4", and did 365 for 3 weighing around 183 at the time.  I wouldn't be able to push around or press 250+lb guys over my head like Shamrock did in WWF.  Very confident he could do way more than only 2 reps more than me with that weight, and for a single.  I am nothing special.  We had a 5'2" black dude named Ricky that weighed 170-175, and was clean (I know, because he trained with my training partner on days I couldn't, and we tried like crazy to get him to do a cycle and he wouldn't)  I saw him do 535 x 2 raw and good form.  Dude worked 3 jobs, and would nap between sets.  Craziest thing I ever seen....the lifts, and napping between sets.  I know the part about a black dude working 3 jobs is hard for anyone to grasp.  LOL!  ;D All true though.

I agree
you can tell its heavy by the bend, so no fake weights.
I cant picture Tank even being near fake weights.
Drink booze, lift heavy, fist-fight. (Like BHanks).

Thanks. And maybe when I have a bit of time, yeah.

I once was lifting when Warlord came through Toronto with the WWF. He came to my gym, a Powerhouse.

Spoke with him and spotted him a few times. He spotted me, as well.

Absolutely GIGANTIC and INTIMIDATING fella, yet spoke well and softly. Extremely friendly and encouraging.

I’ve actually never encountered an individual in all my life whose very physical presence caused such fear and anxiety.

Before we spoke, I swear I thought he’d pull off the head of anyone who’d dare approach him.

Funny that.

He bulked up pretty big in the 90s. Later on he stayed cut for years. But yeah, 600, no. He had raw power but not 600 power lifter.
