Rock had his hands behind his back because in a million years he didn’t think Will Smith would hit him. You could see the look on Rocks face that it was real.   He was trying real hard to keep his cool.  Even when Rock backed down when Smith was yelling at him. 

I don’t think it had anything to do with ratings since it happened live so unless you were watching it then no one would have known.  It’s not like people get hit all the time so more people would watch next year.

I guess if in 6 months there is a film with Smith and Rock then we will know. But I thought it was a setup at first but not after watching the clip.
