It wasn’t a record.

Plus, Tom was several years past retirement. He was NOT near his biggest and strongest.

Also, Platz’ reps are deeper.

This fella is extremely impressive, and his form very good, but he’s still a long way from the performance capabilities of a prime Eagle.

Just facts.

Yup, agreed.

Platz told me that four weeks prior to the … 1985, I think? … Mr. Olympia, he squatted 635 for a set of 12.

Completely insane.

He told me, at his peak, he could nail a set of 10 with 600 on even a bad day.

Don't want to go look at Platz again but Joe had a bit of an excuse. Said if he had knee wraps on like Platz and a suit (?) he would have done at least 30 reps. If Tom had knee wraps that's a huge confounder and the two performances can't be compared at all. Joe should've just used wraps then, not come with excuses afterwards. However, and this is kinda hilarious and pathetic, they cut the sleeves off Joe with scissors lol. That can't be called using sleeves as they were meant to be used, especially if you act like they don't help at all.

Platz's record for comparison -

.

Edit - not sure on the knee wraps, there's scant mention of him ever using using them online.

Platz on knee wraps (bottom) -

"EXTRA HINTS

These hints can make your squatting more productive:

1) Wear tight sweat pants.

2) Wear high socks and use a lifting belt.

3) Use a lifting suit or tight fitting tank top over your jersey. This, along with items one and two enhances the tight, secure feeling that you must have in order to squat properly and successfully.

4) When training for power, have a high carbohydrate meal the night before heavy squats -- example, spaghetti.

5) When training for cuts, allow no rest between the reps and try to develop a rhythm.

6) Always approach the bar with confidence when training to absolute failure -- MEAN IT.

Do not think that you have to do all of the above. They are merely hints that you might want to consider.

I do not recommend wraps as I feel they create a dependency and promote injury. Strengthen your muscles, ligaments and joints without wraps."

What is the purpose of this for a bodybuilder or a powerlifter?

Onion Head Kaz came out recently saying Tom used fake plates.

Kaz is a fcking psycho egomaniac. Just listen to any of his ramblings and you'll know. Platz squats where legit. It was a squatoff with Hatfield. Hatfield won for 1rm and Platz won for 525 for reps. Pretty sure Hatfield would have done better if it was fake plates.

There’s value in this type of thing for both. You know this. I know you do.

Over the span of 35 years I’ve gone to absolute failure more times than I can count.

Not once have I “(blown) my back out”.

Both men were shadows of their former selves. Size-/strength-wise.

I’m amazed Fred did as well as he did, truthfully.

you mean you maxed out at the bottom or did you finish the rep?
If you finished the rep thats not failure

The thing with squats is that your legs can lift way more than your low back, just look how much you can leg press compared to squat

You cant take your leg muscles to failure without risking losing form and as such your spine is the weak link

Thanks. But I’ve completed 35 years of weekly squat sessions. I think I’m pretty OK in knowledge of the movement.

I’ve dumped, bailed and been saved in the deepest-knee-bend position with poundages ranging from 315 to 635.

Total, absolute and extreme failure.

Failure at reps ranging from one to 32 (315).

How? It doesn't do anything to make a powerlifter stronger on his 1 rep max and it doesn't build anymore muscle for a bodybuilder than conventional training. All this does is increase the chance of serious injury.
