Maybe we should require the same for police as well before they’re hired.
Some prior experience is a plus for most jobs. Therefore, employers want/require potential employees to submit résumés before an interview is given.
AOC was elected by the people in her district. The folks who voted for her felt prior experience wasn't necessary. Often, newly elected legislators and congress people have previous political experience which may include positions such as school board member or county or city councilpersons.
Portland's Mayor, Ted Wheeler had 10 years of political experience before being elected Mayor. This is his second term as mayor. The previous two term mayor was 16 years ago. Wheeler was Multnomah County Commissioner from 2007 to 2010 and Oregon State Treasurer from 2010 to 2017.
A police officer position is an entry-level position. Entry level positions do not usually require prior experience, but having it give a applicant an advantage. An associate degree in law enforcement also gives an applicant an advantage. Entrance exam testing including basic comprehension skills is typically required to be accepted as a police recruit and enter the training academy. Some police departments have volunteer officer positions in which applicants may have served.
