Man, the early 90's were fucking awesome.

I remember Dorian came on the scene and looked crazy at the NOC but lost to Benezziza. Padilla also looked unbelievable that year. Then Kevin turned pro and I remember back then Kevin was unreal, huge legs, huge arms and absolutely diced. Then Flex turned pro and at that time 92, 93 looked like he had the craziest genetics ever. And I was curious how this was going to play out at the Olympia.  These guys just started looking more and more unbelievable.  Then the Olympia comes around and there's Dillet who ends up being the freakiest looking bodybuilder Ive ever seen. And between all of them -overnight- bodybuilding just changed. Just a whole other level. In my mind bodybuilding went from something that I 'could' do, if I really dedicated myself, to something that was totally unattainable and I stopped following the sport for a few years. Then in 98 or 99 I picked up a Flex magazine and saw Ronnie Coleman. I think I actually laughed out loud and just set the magazine back down.

I didn't get what the big deal was about him. He was ugly and sounded dumb in interviews. What's he doing these days? Does he still lift? I thought a few years back someone posted that he no longer works out or anything.

The best silhouette ever but when the lights come one and it's posing time, it's all downhill.

I’d say it’s a toss up between Ruhls silhouette and dillets.

His physique was insanity. Complete alien genetics. But he appeared fragile and like he wasn't in control of his body. It didn't project power. Couldn't hold a pose, looked like he was falling over all the time. When he hits a bicep flex it looks like he is blacking out lol.

Hell that’s 30 years ago and I was working the front desk at Golds Gym Venice.

On Saturday mornings Dillet would stroll in wearing a sleeveless- not a tank top. He would then giant set shoulders & arms.  No real strategy it seemed just random exercise selections...

Seat Cybex dips, then flex single arm seated machine curls, then Cybex seated side laterals. All in the front room at Golds Venice.

Lots of sets. Minimal weight.

So he would get this crazy shoulder and arms pump going. We would catch one another watching him, then look at each other and just shake our heads.

The unspoken conversation was:

“Are you seeing what I’m seeing?”
“Dude! What the fuck!”
“That’s not fair.”
“I give up.”
“Dude!!”
“I know I know! I’m seeing what you’re seeing.”
“Fuck.”

Shake head. Walk away.

Fast forward to 2022, you are massive ...and Paul is quite small.

To begin with, someone needs to point out the blatantly obvious:

Amazing physique for a 27-year-old former sheet metal worker.

Next:

It's intriguing to me that a man that absolutely massive was apparently as weak as feathers - at least with respect to what you'd expect from a 6'1.5" / 285-lb giant of a man.

Paul was like he was just wearing a muscle suit, no real power, as mentioned "fragile"
His entire lower back was void of any detail or development and was generally smooth as a babies bum.

I remember when you could recognise all the Olympia competitors from their silhouettes

Pellius would always be the guy to chime in and say that Dillet trained harder and was stronger than anyone gave him credit for.

Big fan of Pauls physique and I always wondered "Jesus christ how bad does your posing have to be to lose shows when you're built like that?"

Then I saw his posing. It always looked like he was in extreme duress while posing. Like his muscles were ready to give out at any moment.  Shaking like a leaf. Would only hold a pose for a second or two at most.

Dillet is perhaps the apex version of all drugs

There was no base and he was literally puny without gear

yeah it's crazy to think how much it changed just from 92 - 94
