Really I'm approaching 63 & deep full squat over 400Lbs in training

As far back & knees being shot that can be at any age .

You’re an exception. Very few are still doing that.

From what I’ve seen in gyms over the years, most people shouldn’t be squatting it all as their form  is so horrible as a result of using too much.

then it's not the weight, nor the movement, it's just the individual. My first SC coach (who trained under john lear rip) wouldn't let us get under a barbell until we were able to overhead squat, that's probably a good rule of thumb to follow. if you don't have the ankle\hip mobility\stability to OH squat, you shouldn't barbell squat with any kind of substantial weight

For me Front squats / Back squats & leg press .
Sometimes lower power reps on the squats & sometimes higher 15/20
Leg press 8 - 30+ reps
Did have just under 30inch thighs now around 28.5
age sucks.

not bad for another fat slob!!!

There’s also the wear and tear issue that comes with age. No one escapes that.

Use more high rep hack squats. Developing the lower quad down at the knee gives the appearance of much bigger looking legs.

you should also do the opposite and band the hack squat and overload the legs in the stretched position, it's hard to train quads fully stretched and easy to do it fully contracted

I'm actually thinking of getting a sissy squat bench for my home Gym.
Done properly these really blast the Quads.
Back squats with a heavy bar are not as productive as people think.
These days I'm going more for quality training not ego lifting

I have one in my home gym that is actually how I tore the meniscus and destroyed both knees when I started getting back into training that is how I wound up unable to walk

For me ass to grass squats work best, even with fewer sets than other exercises and mild loads. Reps on the high.
I am "blessed" with short femurs so squatting feels very natural for me.

you start with red band to reinforce the technique then i wanna say it was a mop stick then bar->bar+weights

imo the best way to properly learn how to engage the quads is to put elastic bands behind your knees and perform bw squats at first, then progressively add weight ( with a kettlebell ) and use stiffer bands.

You may start with one banded leg or directly go with both

when the motor control pattern is learned and sensory connections are created, you can move on to more traditional exercices

Obviously you've got to be careful when beginning but why crush your spine with massive loads with a barbell.
Superb results can be had from this variation.

I get decent quad pumps when I deadlift

Guess I have a "quad dominant" style. My technique looks more or less like this:

The best way is to stay away from heavy free weights and leave your ego at the door
