it's science catching up with bro science, they've "discovered" get the most out of hypertrophy if you train in a fully stretched position as opposed to contractions. So the trend is doing constant tension where the muscle is overly stretched

Yeah - that makes sense.

I will admit I did at some flys with bands to chest work.

I do it just because I can really "feel" it, but not sure it does anything.

Brian you haven't posted a fucking workout for months
Last one was 3 sets 20 rep leg extensions and leg curls FFS

and you train at home, what machines have you got that you can finish your training on one "every time"

I have a cable crossover machine and a plate loaded leg extension leg curl machine

When I said everytime I meant everytime doing both its always free weights first then machines but yes some workouts is just free weights or just machines. When training I work out at the commercial gym about 2 days of the week but at least 1 a week. I do not just train at home.

tear you apart?

also why not just strengthen your lower back?

With Chins, you’re lifting your entire body weight without warm up. You can get away with this when you’re young  but once you hit middle age the risk goes up.

Do you lift your body weight on the first set of lat pulldowns or do you warm up?

Same with bent rows. Even if your lower back is plenty strong you can pull something and IMO  there’s no worse muscle to pull than lower back. The risk reward ratio for bent over rows is poor. I’d bet Dorian doesn’t even do them anymore.

I use mostly free weights because it's what I like doing and it's what can fit in my basement.  With a barbell, adjustable bench, cage, and set of adjustable dumbbells you can do basically anything and don't need much room.

Recently got this plate-loaded bench and attachment for leg extensions and curls, on most of these things the range of motion sucks in my experience but this one is nice, highly recommend it:

https://www.amazon.com/Body-Solid-GFID100-Incline-Decline-Bench/dp/B017HZKNAW/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=body+solid+bench+attachments&qid=1694102840&sprefix=body+solid+bench%2Caps%2C97&sr=8-17

The only problem is the pin for the plates is not normal size so they bang around a lot, but the range of motion is very good.

I think it's hard to get complete leg development without machines.

They are one in the same think of low rep power lifting strength as building and tuning an engine to get as much performance out of it as possible. Think of reps blood pump and hypertrophy and pumping the moosulls and getting a larger block with more potential performance capacity once fully built and tuned. You need both to reach your full potential.

Dude..agree but some movements you can´t change with machines.
Nautilus is the best but some musle groups need free weight exercises.

I agree , but I was just speaking on PRO bodybuilding

I work with soldiers and you can be damn sure the one thing they need STARTING OUT is to be familiar with the bar - in all aspects - pulling pushing squatting pressing overhead - foundations are foundations - a solid structure isn't built on machines -

dont get me wrong I used a bar in my early years - no replacement -

yeah the military uses weight training nowadays but at my time it wasn´t really encouraged, running & pulling yourself over a 6 foot wall was more important.

I only knew a few who really liked pumping iron & our gym only had  2 multi-gyms & no free weights.
squats & other leg exercises were leg press on the multi-gym but mainly we did circuit training, step ups on benches, free hand squats but lots of reps.

urban fighting is very exhausting & big muscles don´t help you get through a window whilst weighted down with equipment.. it´s a totally different kind of fitness.

Having said that nowadays they have developed programmes for the military & even use exercises like Deadlifts in their fitness tests.
exercises like farmers walk we always did carrying jerry cans or other weighted objects.

Free weights are completely useless when it comes to BB. In many of the modern BB gyms where the top coaches are prepping many pros, there aren't even any barbells or dumbbells anymore, just a carefully picked selection of high-end machines.

Your muscle fibres can't tell the difference between a barbell and a machine lol

It's clear machines are in favor because it's easier.  What's harder? Doing a barbell squat or a machine squat?  Military press or a machine press? I can go on.  Most guys will always gravitate toward the least path of resistance. That's why short range of motion is the new rule in the gym. Dumbbell presses for chest and shoulders have become comedic how short range they are. Same with leg presses.
