The American forces are not on the front lines of Ukraine.  When we go we send an overwhelming force with overwhelming support. Look at the actual casualties in Iraq vs gun deaths in the US we lost under 893 soldiers in the worst year of the war. Meanwhile we have 40k people killed by guns annually domestically. You are more likely to get shot and killed in Chicago or hit by a drunk driver than shot and killed in a war as a US soldier based on post Vietnam statistics.

Yes because the front line of Ukraine is a ragtag group of new enlisted soldiers whose leaders are begging the world for equipment and training. As such they are in a fierce battle with a military powerhouse from the 1950s. If the American forces sent their full combat troops the American Air force would have cleared out the foreign defenses in a week before ground troops even arrived to play cleanup and peacekeeping. Going to war as an American soldier is not the same as going to war with the Ukrainian Army.

But yes I would be willing to accept a combat tour for the right pay you just have to look at risk vs reward. If you and 100 of your Viking buddies are raiding a village of 20 women and children the risk of combat is minimal vs the potential return but also probably not a lot of gold in the village. If you are attacking a well-fortified and defended castle there is a lot more risk to life and limb but also probably more gold inside the castle. Make it worth my while and convince me we are going to win and get the gold and I will help raid the castle even if it is more risky than attacking a village. But fuck no I am not volunteering again for current military pay.

Well, my kids both had careers in the military and are likely too old to enlist if there is a WWIII. Depending on how long WWIII went on, my grandkids are too young to enlist in the military.

How do you envision WWIII if it were to be declared? Would it include arm to arm combat? Maybe it would be a cyberwar instead. One can only hope we aren't stupid enough for it to be a nuclear war.
