Maybe he`ll buy Denise Rutkowski a new sleeping bag.

Maybe they'll get married.

I bet the hall of famers from 30 years ago are fckn insane with jealousy. That is major fuck you money.
$328 million or $328,760,268.00 in 1993 now equals $700 million in 2023. Still a lot.

Can Ohtani stay healthy?

He will not pitch in 2024 since he is recovering from arm surgery.

He may never be the same pitcher.  He can still hit though which is his biggest plus.

Big gamble for the Dodgers on this one.
His sponsors obviously think he can.

Meanwhile Arvilla can’t afford to take a day off from his mall cop job despite his leg leaking blood.

Life is bitter.

FACTS: Ohtani won’t play more than six more years. He’ll never pitch again. Dodgers will be paying his Bonilla salary for the next 30 years after Ohtani tanks it.

Well deserved? You are as fucked as the people paying him OMR, no disrespect. But in this instance I just can’t fathom anyone saying it’s well deserved, 700 million to play a child’s game? You fucking kidding me?

Well deserved salary for a sports player of his caliber in my world would be 250-500k and even that is ridiculous.

I get it brother, but it's a supply and demand thing.

Being a doctor is noble, but let's face it, no one's lining up to watch them in action. Meanwhile, 71 million fans went wild for the 2023 MLB season. We're talking foam fingers, nachos and stadium pee breaks next to weirdos with bhanks-esque mustaches AND all for the love of the game that rakes in billions for the MLB.

But who dictates the ridiculous pay Shohei gets? Surprise, it's us the fans. We're turning baseball into a gold mine and paying those jaw dropping salaries. It's our privilege to indulge in this entertaining sport. Doctors pay? Dictated by insurance companies and hospital systems. But healthcare shouldn't be a privilege like sports entertainment. It should be a right.

Now, let's circle back to supply and demand. Shohei isn't your average athlete, he's the Michael Jordan of baseball. Rarity comes at a cost and those 71 million fans will happily chant 'Take my money sensei!' for a stadium seat. Imagine if no one cared about MLB. Shohei would make $242,154, like Erica Wheeler, the WNBA's top earner. Big pay gap? Because not many watch the WNBA. After taxes, Erica takes home $150,000. Not bad, but a far cry from Shohei's $70 million.

I get why these athlete salaries piss you off, but without those 71 million fans, it'd be a different game. Again, supply and demand... In a deeper sense, I see it as more than money though. Romans had 'bread and circus' in tough times. Baseball is our distraction, our hope, like a sitcom while we live throughout what I believe is the worst timeline in human history. Inversely, when things are good, baseball sweetens the American dream.

For that reason, Shohei can make a slit into my wallet with his katana and run to first base with his back pocket filled with 2 weeks worth of my pay, because if it allows me to escape from the monotony that life brings us, it's fucking worth it.

As much of an asshole that I am, I just can’t stand to see these numbers when so many people could use help. Homeless vets, pets, kids and people juts down on their luck etc… just seems wrong. Also again it’s jealousy. Didnt mean to attack you if it seemed that way. That number is just astronomical.

Im SUBSTANTIALLY poorer than you, and most likely the entire board. I have zero jealousy of his numbers. Again, with me, its what the market has determined so good for him, he out performed everyone in a high paying market and got rewarded. I also fucking love sports, so I have that bias too

This 100 percent. He’s never going to play out this contract. He’s gonna 30 this summer and hes more than likely peaked as a player, certainly as a pitcher. The risk of Injuries will stop the team from letting him pitch pretty soon too

I don’t care good for him.My Rangers finally won a World Series after 51 years of killing me. I told the baseball gods to just give me one and I will never ask for another.Of course we will get deGrom back next year so who knows.

You say that. But I said it with the Saints and a decade and a half later I am feeling the need to go back on my word!! 😆

Exactly right man. Who are we to say what someone is worth? Well - the truth is that we are EVERYTHING to say it… but not by complaining after the fact. I say again if people stopped paying exorbitant prices, the market would correct and do so in a hurry. As long as people are willing to trade their money for entertainment then it will continue to escalate. I love sports too and fckn hate doctors so there’s that!  😁

Ohtani makes the owners of baseball huge money so he shou!d be paid for it.

The owners are raking it in.

However, nobody is forced to buy tickets, watch, buy merch, and gamble on the games.

Surgeons make a fortune now.

Cops and firemen do quite well also.
Where does all the money in baseball come from? The TV ratings are terrible compared to football and baseball stadiums are usually half full or half empty depending on your viewpoint.

So, according to his contract, what happens if he gets injured in three years and can never play again?

Will he still get paid the rest of the years on the contract?

Baseball contracts are fully guaranteed.

Yes, but likely his payments are covered by insurance.

  https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/shohei-ohtanis-contract-will-defer-68mm-per-year.html

Apparently, Ohtani makes $50M a year OUTSIDE of baseball as well, which is why he can do this.

MLB needs to cap deferrals.

Speaking of these Japanese super athletes, there is another Samurai by the name of Yoshinobu Yamamoto (pitcher) who looks to be a beast on the mound. The guy treats every pitch like the last pitch of his life and the sheer sound of his pitches are ridiculous. Rumor has it that various teams, including the Yankees, are giving him consideration.
