Perception is everything. There was implied value to having a degree from a top notch IV league school. The notion existed that having attended would get you more interviews and possibly hired by sheer namesake alone.

Today, we know better. While the education is still likely very good, it's not worth the price of admission (Tuition at Harvard is $55K per year = $220K per 4 years). We now know that so as long as you have the right training and certifications for your respective field, having a degree from any of the IV league schools is merely a move for cachet purposes.

Again, that's merely my opinion. I attended IVY league schools and big name private schools and when looking back, had I known then what I know now, I would have more readily gone to a local state school. I would have saved myself a shit ton of money, still gotten the same degrees and would have likely had more fun in the process with less of the ridiculous rigors that were placed in front of me given the need to impress high-brow professors.

If you want to network with cutting edge researchers you go to MIT/Standford etc, and if you aren't there to network with others you just go wherever.

It's all relative to how you play it. Those schools are massive in size. The likelihood of the average student having rubbed elbows with Zuckerberg during his tenure at Harvard is slim.

That said, if you can pay to play, it certainly puts you in the environment where you could possibly meet some people of value. I still speak to old friends from Business school, but have they opened doors for me over the years? Not really. A few hookups here and there (passes to sports events, reservations at high end restaurants, mileage for flights, access to new Iphones before they hit the market? Sure).

Aside from that, the buddies I've made here (on this site) have brought way more laughter into my life over the last 2 decades. These motherfuckers on here are savages, but to them, it's an art.
