James "Lights Out" Toney.  In this prime, the truest, most impressive fighter of all time.  Never afraid of a war, while at the same time making guys miss out of the true Philly Shell.  The type of dude that would call your baby ugly pre-fight, beat your ass, and then keep mean mugging you after the fight was over.  A warrior that never overcame the trauma he faced as a youngster.

could not stand this arrogant douche but yep he was something special

this dude got the power 8) 8) 8)

I forgot to mention Joe Calzaghe.  Some will say he fought the majority of his fights in Europe with mainly white fighters but he fought some big names even if some would argue they were on the decline when Joe fought them. Calzaghe had power, aggression and incredible conditioning.

Calzaghe v Lacey was a great performance

considering Calzaghe basically fought one handed for his last 15 fights he was a phenomenon

That was a unification fight and a fight a lot of people thought Lacey would win. Calzaghe put on a masterful performance and absolutely dominated Lacey. Lacey wasn't the same after that fight.

I walked into a boxing gym in my early 20's. I was fast from sprinting and I lifted weights. On day one I told the owner I wanted some ring time. He put me in the ring with a guy that out weighed me by 20lbs. Looked about 18 and 200lbs plus. He was training for the NY Golden Gloves. Not knowing anything I went all out having him against the ropes. He was blocking my punches.  He then opened up. The gym owner said I was out on my feet when he stopped the fight. I was humiliated and as I got out of the ring and a little welterweight said, "Fight me next." I didn't return to that gym.

Some years later I got the urge again but did it the right way getting some training in. Had five more fights and of course thought I won them all. The guys I fought were tomato cans except for one. He knocked me down but I got up quick and we were both tagging each other pretty good. Naturally he thought he won but I thought even with the knock down I won. They gave it to him. These were all gym fights in the ring.

I got out of my short lived boxing "career" quick and I'm still pretty.  Blocking punches with your face makes you ugly quick. Anyone that hasn't fought in the ring have no clue how brutal boxing is. In submission wrestling a guy has you in a hold, you tap and it's over. Getting punched is brutal. I have never kick boxed as in Muay Thai but that looks sick.

narcissism and boxing is a very bad mix

case in point during my spars it hurt getting punched no doubt but i was absoultey furious i got hit perfect boxers never get hit yes i have this insane belief in my head, so every time he landed a blow i was more and more pissed off

i gonna go back to practicing boxing because weight training does jack fucking shit to get rid of and release anger and it's boring as fuck

boxing training is very fucking hard but more fun and interesting 8)

I had dozens of fights as an amateur and junior. Being honest I was caught between boxing and martial arts- I started boxing a I did TKD and entered freestyle tournaments and the Lau Gar Kung Fu lads were ultra quick with their hands so could steam in and pick oiff points. So. did boxing for handspeed really. And conditioning. I don't care what anyone says if you can box a heavy spar for 6 x 3 minutes you are in shape.

At 17 I was winning ABA regionals and in the semi's came up against a real boxer. I was basically game had a relatively stiff jab and a heavy left hand (I'm a southpaw). MOst of the fights i won came courtesy of a jab low right jab low righ feint low right left over the to combo. This guy semed to knw what i was doing before i threw anything. I lasted the 3 rounds but hardly landed a shot. Prior to that there was talk of turning pro I was sparring pro's in the gym- towards the end of the 10 rounds one 30 seconds rest change partner every 2 rounds some of them did. But seein gthe diffference between a decen tclub amateur like myself and a future pro like th elad who beat me with some ease made me question that! Fortunately the judiciary decided i wasnt welcome either so i went away.

Anyone who has genuinely got in a ring with a trained figher they don't know and give it hell for leather knows what i mean. Thats why when imbeciles like brian talk of ragdolling tyson its a farce. Tyson was so quick he would hit anyone on te way in and fracture their skull. However brian has never been hurt so it wouldnt matter. Phrases like this cnvince me he is full of shit. Brian is a bully an dbullies never do well in the ring. they get battere and 90% disappear. the 10% that comeback stop being bullies.

Muay Thai was and indeed is brutal. Until you've taken a proper leg kick you cant imagine the pain. It is literally stop the bus i want to get of in terms of pain.I leanrt under Master Sken in Manchester. I've seen him shin kick through 4 inches of wood. He also used to kick apples off swords. To strneghten our shins we used to roll beer bottles up and down our shins applying pressure. The kick a makiwari or a tree base. Brutal as fuck. A firend of mine livews over in thailand. He was a former european thai champ. When he got there he trained in a recommended gym and in his own words was a punch and kick bag for 3 months. A s a foreigner he was treated like shit but eventually earnt their respect but it came with loads of busted ribs, noses, chekbones eye sockets. Fuck that!!

This is not me cliaming i had 11,600 school fights unbeaten its me outlining my experience of boxing etc.

Favorite fighter right now..... gotta be Jamie Clegg.

Oldtimer1, our experiences are pretty similar. Actually thought I had great potential. Starting boxing after wtestling, strength and conditioning were great. I really liked to study the sport from a young age, watched dozens of fight films.

Over the course of 10 years or so boxed at 4 different gyms and had a dozen or so fights, exhibitions and amatuer, heavy sparring.

One day during sparring a guy, who was quite a bit bigger than me, was looking to spar. I said sure. The coach instructed us both to pull our punches due to the size difference. After a round or so he's hitting me pretty good. So I respond.  He was a pure brawler, no skill. I had a lot of skill, hand speed and goid power at my weight. So I start really outclassing this guy. Hitting him with combinations.  He starts hitting me even harder and I respond with more combinations.  Coach steps in and says 'I'm not going to tell you guys again! Knock it off!' He tells the other guy that im a much better boxer, then he tells me "that guy could kill you if he catches you in a corner."  He chastises both of us and says he doesn't want us getting injured in training. Coach resumes the match....this fucking guy winds up with a shot that spun me around with his first punch after resuming. He didn't give a fuck what the coach said. I guess he felt he needed to prove a point. My entire body went numb for the next three or 4 hours. (You know when you sleep on your arm and wake up and your arm has no feeling? My whole body felt like that) but I was on my feet and conscious. I finished the round and said 'I'm good. I'm done' I walked home from the gym like a drunk because I couldn't feel my feet touching the ground. That was the last time I seriously attempted boxing though I continued to train for several more years.

I still vainly say I hit like a mule but have enough sense that it takes more than that to be a good fighter. I will never get in the ring again.

Moo Thai was popular in the USA in the early 80s?

I don't think it really hit the UK until the 90s (maybe closer to the late 90s).

Calzaghe v Lacey was a great performance

considering Calzaghe basically fought one handed for his last 15 fights he was a phenomenon

One thing I remember about that fight was Lacey's girlfriend was emasculating him from the front row, constantly screaming shit like "hit him Jeff". The poor guy had to stop and lean over the rope to tell her to shut up at one point.
