obese guy questions.....wants to GETSMALL
« on: May 02, 2006, 07:24:10 PM »
i'm 41, 337lbs, 6'1" and i need to loose weight and build muscle.  my waist size is 48 and chest is 56.  my goal is to be able to buy clothes again in a regular store and feel great.  i've gone to several gyms here in chicago and have interviewed some trainers........they were more interested in giving me their prices rather than listening to me about my situation.  if i would have signed on that day, they all would have given me a DEAL.  my dr. is onboard and says i'm ok to do anything.

i'd like some ideas on my diet, supplements, cardio and lifting, please.

please no fat jokes, ok?  i've read some threads and some people can be rude.

The diet will be the hardest thing both in terms of setting it up and sticking to it. A trainer could help, but so far none seem interest in helping. I would think that you would present the kind of challenge these guys would want. Once you start training your gonna loose weight and the changes will be very  noticable. I don't get how they would not want to show you off in a years' time. This would show how good they are. Your doctor should have you see a nutrionist. There are plenty of guys here who should be able to outline a good weightloss plan. Go slow, and as the last guy said, cut out the bad stuff. Outline what you eat now and then begin to cut out everything bad. I would do it over a 30 day period so emotionally you will better be able to stick to the diet. Someone might have a different opinion and say to cut it all out at once. I think this is gonna be tough for you and you need to start slow.

Supplement wise: I wouldn't worry about it right away. You'll need a good protein supplement at some point in the future. There is a good weightloss supplement put out by NDS Nutrition: out of Nebraska. I have seen countless people lose 30lbs plus on this stuff usually over a six month cycle. 1 Supply lasts 3 monts at about $169.00. I don't own stock but I believe in this stuff. to lose weight quickly, combined with a sensible diet.. running is the best way to go..If you have trouble running- walk at a fast pace (easier on the joints).

An eliptical would be the best thing to start with, you could even alternate between the two, every other day. As the weight comes off through diet etc, running on the treadmill and then outside needs to be the next thing.

It's simple, there is not secret...

The answer is:
healthy diet+cardio

The hard part is actually doing it

Good luck 8)

thanks guys!  i know i can do it by myself......part of my problem is that i played football in high school and college, and never had real good nutritional advice.  just eat and lift to bulk.  i coasted through my 30s being the former football player, but now my freshman year of college was over 20 years ago......yikes!   :o

now i have to figure out how to eat right and exercise to loose.  its like driving a car in england on the other side of the road.  i'll keep on watching the thread.  i will take a before picture AND AN AFTER!

do you guys think a body over 40 reacts differently?  i like the advice about joints.

yes at 21 i could pound in 7000+calories every day and never add weight now i pass by a donut at the store (im 38) and i put on weight.its never to late to start getting serious but its all about making the consistent effort, do not buy junk food, do not keep any at your home, never have any takeout flyers at your house and drive home to avoid fast food spots if needed. learn to eat small meals more offten and don't get sucked into spending big dollars on supplements just eat less and healthy and take a good multi vitimin and some extra C.drink allot of water and keep your head up and do not keep checking the scale go by dropping clothes sizes.good luck.

After 40 you have more little aches and pains and it's sometimes harder to get motivated but the fundamentals are the same-running or cardio 5-6 times a week (not going through the motions-building up to serious work) + good diet (initially I'd suggest something like the Atkins Diet, cutting out carbs). Throw in weights on top of those two.

Of course what you put into the body will have the major influence of all. May want to drop the carbs down to 300 grams the first weeks. The second week, down to 200 and the following week 100 grams a day. You want to start this process slowly, advoiding the crash diet disaster of doing things too quickly. After that 100 grams week is pasted than control the carb intake around the 40 gram mark for as long as you wish to stay on a weight lost plan. I would not suggest a zero carb diet at any time, though it has worked for some. Recommend a good vitimin/mineral/herb supplement daily along with a fish and/or flaxseed oil based cap. Drink lot's of water throughout the day. Your protein supple should be up quite high  because of the increased fish, chicken & meat consumption. May also want to do some serious reading/research before undertaking any eating pattern that is 180 degress different  from what your use to.

Running, threadmills, etc may not be the best choice at this point. At 41 and all that added weight, the feet, ankles, knees, lower back/hips may be given more stress than needed. Might consider short intreval cardio programs as the Tabata method or like training. Air-Dyne, Spinning, rowing and other forms of sitting/reclining machines offer good cardio workouts.  Don't know if the Duncan YMCA in Chicago still offer's BB'ing/weight lost programs but I've been told by quite a few in the training field/profession (more expert than I'll ever be) that they are one of the best in the mid-west.

A book that I may suggest is Challenge Yourself by Clarence Bass. Quite a few Tri athletics around here (SD) follow a similar training style. Not that you want to become a Tri preformer but it has some very good weight loss/endurance/BB'ing advice for any age. It's not the low carb thing but a different angle of weight loss and muscle gain. Any BB'ing training plan can be converted into a cardio workout with less rest between set's and exercises and still build muscle mass. The old PHA and Circuit Training also come to mind.

I weighted 280 or so in college (senior year) when playing football at 6'2. I'm 33 now and weight 235. Thing is, my chest now is the same size as when I was 280 and the waist is a hard 36". Don't know what your playing weight was, but your first goal might be to drop down to your college weight as the first phase of your weight loss plan. Good Luck.

Well diet cardio and weights.  You will want to do cardio every day and mix in weight training.  You want to tone and build a little if you can.  As far as trainers, you need to find out if the are certified!!!. A lot of gyms out there will hire trainers right off the street if they look like they may work out (funny thing is some of them dont).

I live in Chicago and can tell right away if a trainer is all what he or she is cracked up to be.  Ive occassionally got free passes to other gyms with a free trainng session.  They can def tell I work out but i pick their brains and find out they really know squat about training.  Most gyms in chicago are made for the occassional work out person who might come now and then or a few weeks every couple months.  Thats how they make their money.  The gym I go to has  no contracts and everyone there is serious about working out.

You first need to make a commitment to yourself. Even if you feel a little tired GO.  Dont slack ever (unless your sick)  Once you do diet cardio weights religiously on a weekly schedule you will see the changes!!!  So many people i know or such slackers they may go out bar hopping during the week and skip the gym.  Or something comes up and they again skip the gym.

So dont ever make excuses of why you cant go to they gym.  Just go and believe in yourself.  changes dont come overnight and there will be some sweat and pain but its all worth it dude.

this will be very easy for you if you train hard.

here is your training regimine:

-walk the stairs at a tall building

-do push ups

that should be enough given the fat suit you're wearing

bro i was almost in ur exact situation, exept im 26
i started a diet and working out(well i was always workin out)
on jan3 06 i was 6,0,340lbs,

now im 289 and feel so much better, and in all of march i barely worked out due to injury but stayed on diet and i still lost a bit weight
my joints feel so much better ,im tryin to get down to 9 percent bodyfat which i think is around 200lbs, i did the hydrostic test 3 years ago when i was 220 and i was 185 at 9 percent

for me the main thing is diet,

even if i dont work out and go for a few walks and stsay on diet i still lose weight not as fast as if i would work out

i do boxing, swimming, and lifting and hiking, i mix it up ,i also mix up my diet so my body never knows wat to expect

and i have a cheat meal usually once a week sometimes twice, with this program im losing 2-4 lbs a week

WOOO

Bang on... good luck big man.  If I were you I would take pictures now and post them in your house as motivation.  Then as you decrease in weight take new pictures and put them beside them.  It will take a long time and be very difficult but many others have done it.

I was in the same position you were and am currently losing weight at about 7.5 -10 lbs a month which my doctor said is a healthy rate, and that I probably shouldnt lose it any faster than that, Ive lost a total of 18 lbs since March 1st. The main thing to do is cut out fatty foods and things with sugar. I cut drinking pop or sugar filled drinks and started drinking water and green tea alot. I also lift 4 times a week and do 30-40 mins of cardio a day. I also play basektball for 2 and half hours a night/ 3 times a week. Basketball is one of the best examples of cardio thats not boring because its like interval training which is great for weight loss. I like to get a hard workout and a good sweat goin in the weightroom and then go straight to the cardio for at least a half an hour and if i have enough time ill go longer. Suggestion, watch Arnolds "Pumping Iron" if you cant get pumped to go lift and workout after watching that you dont have a pulse.

i just got done walking up stairs in a high-rise building.  i only went from the 14th to the 21st floor, but i'll tell ya what- it was harder than a half hour on the bike at level 1 for 15 minutes, then level 2 for 15.  then i came inside my condo and did a TOTAL OF 3 (CLAP HERE   ;D) push ups.

as far as my diet is concerned, i'm trying to watch everything i eat and drink.  do you think i should start food journals?

thanks for the ideas so far and all of the effort!

Supplement wise: I wouldn't worry about it right away. You'll need a good protein supplement at some point in the future. There is a good weightloss supplement put out by NDS Nutrition: out of Nebraska. The science/theory behind it is that the products you take keeps you metabolism clicking along so you continue to burn fat and your body never gets used to your diet and exercise plan. I have seen countless people lose 30lbs plus on this stuff usually over a six month cycle. 1 Supply lasts 3 monts at about $169.00. I don't own stock but I believe in this stuff. One is designed for men and one for women. The difference is in the vitamins. You need a multi vitamin regardless. The second site will help you find a retailer. There is very lilttle out there that is designed for your body in its current state. Don't let someone sell you crap. Post some before during and after pics. I'm sure more folks will help. Good luck

dude, i used to sell this shit, don't waste your hard-earned money.  we had more returns than we knew what to do with...no offense, headhuntersix.  this guy shouldn't even rely on supplements this early in the game, once he's hit a plateau maybe some whey ISOLATE, CLA, green tea and L-Carnitine...and a whole lot of cardio/basic lifting/proper nutrition of course.

i won't disagree there BUT, it is whey CONCENTRATE and is high in cholesterol...not to mention it's not cheap (per serving) in comparison to other leading brands (ON)...

I would, thats how I started. My parents do that Weight Watchers stuff with the points, so they have to write everything down and counted the points. I did that at first until I got the hang of things and now I know what I can eat and still lose weight. But if I was you I would write down what your eating, you'll be suprised how much you really eat in a day once you start writing it down

oh also right now I am taking Muscle Milk, I drink a shake or make protein pudding with it and eat that as a breakfast or in place of a meal, or at night after working out to keep getting the protein I need and instead of eating something else. Its very lean and tastes great, its the only protein I have ever takin and been able to lose weight as opposed to gaining it. Its just a suggestion, its working for me right now. I dont take a whole serving though I only use one scoop in skim milk or I make it with sugar free pudding and skim milk. Thought I would add that.

obviously the advice here is free and has been posted a million times....thats the expectation...and you could have found it just by searching.....but what did you really expect from the trainers?  free detailed advice?  i mean yeah you're fat and that sucks, but you wouldnt do your job for free so why would you expect them to?  if you think they're underqualified thats one thing and reasonable, but dont get upset that they actually wanted to be paid for their service.
