Whatever the reason is, it is a "retreat" of sorts, so he'll never admit to it. I think he probably got called out on some of his behavior by someone he knows.

I am absolutely going to Law School. Will I graduate? Will I pass the bar and become a lawyer? Will anyone hire me? Will I start a firm? All that remains to be seen. However, I am absolutely going to Law School this August not sure why that is giving you an existential crisis. They gave me an academic and veteran scholarship how can I say no? Honestly you also seemed just as upset when I got my pec fixed and when I won the Charlotte Cup. Maybe you are putting too much effort and emotion into rooting against me?
