Royalty, you're a shrewd operator when it comes to this stuff, so I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out. What if... and, God, I hate to say it... but what if the dog did it?

I'm thinking Gene woke up from his afternoon nap early and heard a commotion downstairs. When he entered the living room, he found his dog and wife engaged in a passionate tryst. Furious (and slightly aroused), he attempted to strangle the pooch, but with it being a tough working breed, the German Shepard quickly overpowered Gene and suffocated him with a well-placed paw. With the wife now being a witness to homicide, he had no choice but to silence her too. Panicked, overcome with guilt in having just killed his sexual partner, and facing the rest of his life in a kennel, he saw no option but to take the coward's way out. Is this possible?

Why was the front door unlocked & open?

The dog could have escaped and looked for food.

And, supposedly, 2 other dogs were found alive.

Just watched a little of the police conference. The one dog that died was in its kennel in the bathroom. The other two could wander around, in and out through a doggy door. Press officer didn't really say anything new. But from his face during the questions, it didn't seem like they were thinking murder.

They also haven't totally ruled out CO poisoning, he said it wasn't a threat when they were there, but that they were testing after a lot of people were already in and out of the house, so they really don't know.

Odd that such an expensive house apparently didn't have CO detectors?

(Where I live, Netherlands, a smoke / fire detector is legally required on every floor of every house. Easiest for people to buy combined smoke and CO detectors)

I’ve seen many lazy people that have them ,but just do not replace batteries.Some newer homes are automatically hard wired combo fire/ carbon monoxide,but most of the houses are battery operated .

I think this is because of the relative prevalence of unvented gas heaters in the Netherlands.

I live in an old house in Houston that has a gas jet in every room. (house was built in 1948)

I have one unvented heater for very cold days when my undersized central heat is overwhelmed...I keep a monoxide monitor in the same room as the unvented heater.

If it was monoxide for Gene Hackman, it was due to a faulty central heat or water Heater. 

For the two dogs still alive, they may have been outside through a doggie door.

And if it was warm the faulty central heat would not run and the monoxide in the house would disperse

I’ve submitted this theory to a LE friend who works in the department. He said this is the most logical suggestion they’ve heard and they’re going to check the corpses for sexual activity.

I was asked how I knew about the German Shepherd because that was not information released to the public, so I sent him a link to this thread.
