Diabetes - Type 2 Diagnosed
« on: April 01, 2025, 08:28:04 AM »
so at the ripe old age of 59 Ive been diagnosed type 2. My blood test was off the chart with a reading of 12.8 glucose (normal is 4 to 6). Im not surprised because although I hit the gym regularly my food choices were beyond awful. I took the blood test the day after my birthday so that probably didnt help lol, that was 2 months ago. I immediately switched to a not quite keto eating (60 to 80 grams carbs per day) and hammer the protein 300g protein 100g fat and within a month my readings were constantly in the 6's, as low as 5.4. (i have a home test thing). Shitty part is I got neuropathy which isnt an overly big deal just kinda sucks. In the end its been a blessing in disguise because I really like eating this way and my training seems to be a lot better. Anyways, if anyone else is type 2 and has tips feel free to chime in

I'm 64 & got type 2 - it took a while for them to diagnose & it
ravaged my body ' stripped what little body fat I had & a lot of Muscle

I'm on Metformin tablets 2x a day & fast acting insulin pens when I
want / need.

Thankfully I'm gaining my weight / Muscle mass back.

And reading of 12 isnt high - when i was in hospital ( kidney stone &
Infection ) they got a high reading of 32.6 !!!  :o
Yet the doc's & nurses didnt seem to bothered.

i didnt lose a pound nor did i gain a pound, i stayed the same but my strength in the gym is at levels i havent seen since i was 28. All I take is creatine and shit tons of protein although im pretty sure the diabetes didnt make me stronger lol. Im also on the metformin twice a day, zero side effects from it so thats good.

I was in for near 6 days & the lowest reading they got was 13.
Think there were 3 readings that were in the 30s & a whole stack, in the 20s

Glad the metformin are working for you.

Yes I always ate fairly clean & kept a low bodyfat level (around 10-12%)
It appears my insulin just gradually stopped working & I was making lots of it
Non stop - hence the insane thirst I had constantly.
So glad thats now stopped.

I'm being checked once a month - its very useful having the blood glucose
Monitor - though I can now tell if its above around 15 as get a strange taste
In my mouth. The insulin pens work great.

First month or so I felt very nauseous all the time as well as upset stomach/going to the bog more (doesent take much to give me bad guts though as have no large intestine) but they subsided after a month or so I almost packed them in for the nausea at first but everything ok now even since doubling the dose mate

Sounds similar mate I’m still producing insulin but body just not using it, I also lost loads of weigh went from 99kg to 84 or so before I got diagnosed despite trying to eat more to stop it.
One consultant even tried to blame testosterone use for diabetes despite there being plenty studies showing it can actually help.
I’m not on insulin they told me will have too If 1ac doesent go doen after doubling dose they gave me a monitor but I gave up testing as it was depressing haha mine was highest in the morning when I was testing was always 10-12 on waking but 4.5-6 before tea

Re: Diabetes - Type 2 Diagnosed
« Reply #24 on: April 01, 2025, 05:31:14 PM »
Type 2 Diabetes was diagnosed around early November, with a glucose level of 11.2% (been that high for 2+ years).     Took Metformin for a month, then stopped because it was whacking my stomach, but the best thing I did was get a Freestyle Libra 3, which tells me what was actually spiking me with the sugar glucose.  That helped the most.  Stopped rice, sushi, oatmeal and basically watched the spiking levels, and within 3 months, went to to about 6.9%, which I am now.

Learned a ton about what to eat, etc.  More protein, definitely more fat (aka, olives, humas, even real ice cream) and eating protein with fat and less carbs made me, in 3-4 months, lose 30 pounds too, which is cool.  Yes, can't eat pasta or dumplings, but worth it at the end learning about what spikes glucose.  Not what I thought would do it too.
