I liked it, it was "special" for the stream of consciousness writing, some bad grammar etc. Supposedly had a big continuous roll of paper on the typewriter and wrote it in a couple of days on amphetamines with no sleep until finished.

Typically I like to read about the books I read. Often I'll start with reviews on GoodReads.

When I looked up OTR, there was so much bullshit reviews about 'white privilege' and 'toxic masculinity' that I could not take in any more of these kind of comments. Such as 'only a white male could possibly feel safe traveling across the country' and 'the way he used women'... just garbage takes.

I read it back in 2020 so perhaps thats why there were so many 'woke' negative reviews. In any event, I didnt look much further into the background of the book. I appreciate the info. FWIW, in no way shape or form did I see it as toxic/privileged etc. ..

Didn't know it was viewed that way. I mean the beatnik movement was about free love, group sex, drugs and alcohol, listening to black music and having black friends, buddhism, a lot of liberal, degenerate things. One character in his books was Allen Ginsberg, a still celebrated poet who also was a NAMBLA type fella. But I think also Kerouac's Catholicism IIRC. People are sensitive I guess.
