That is my understanding as well. The free speech mostly means you don't get arrested for your personal thoughts about events, politics, or whatever. It doesn't keep your private company employer from firing you.

I am a big supporter of free speech BTW. Even if someone wants to be a jackass about the Kirk thing and say he deserved to die or was a scumbag or whatever else. It is their right to say it. It is also their employers right to fire them. But they should not be arrested for saying it.

You're right. Both sides just pay lip service to free speech. Most would eagerly censor anything that suits their agenda. Only a handful stay true to their principles over party loyalty. The US would be so much better off with a viable third party.
