Crazy they aren't talking about the months of complaints from the residents about the protests and assaults. It's almost like they have an agenda.
What "we" are talking about is what is going on currently. Right now, Trump has deployed National Guard troops to Portland which he says is "war ravaged" and "burning to the ground" neither of which is true. Not now nor has it been true with regards to protests at Portland ICE headquarters.
Why is ICE located in a mixed use mostly residential neighborhood? The Cottonwood School, a public charter school was previously situated right next to the ICE facility. They recently moved because of safety issues, including tear gas and other munitions being used in the vicinity and chemicals seeping into the playground area. The Portland city council should cancel or not renew ICE's lease on that property. The proximity to residential areas has been
a major point of contention and a focus of protests, with neighbors expressing concerns about safety and the use of chemical munitions by federal agents during demonstrations. The City of Portland has issued violation notices and considered revoking the facility's land use permit due to alleged breaches of the conditions, specifically regarding the duration of detentions. Land Use Violation: In September 2025, the City of Portland issued a notice of violation, alleging that ICE has repeatedly violated the conditions of its 2011 land use permit by holding detainees for more than the permitted 12 hours or overnight.
The problem is ICE and other Federal police. Yesterday about 200 people spent hours protesting, dancing and yelling outside the ICE field office before
federal officers blasted the crowd with stun grenades and chemicals including tear gas, smoke and pepper balls and pointed green lasers from the building’s lower roof. “You’re making it a war zone,” a protester shouted at ICE police as people ran for cover.
