Why are side laterals so damn hard on the body !?

U can't even move any weight on side laterals and still they're more taxing than a set of heavy squats ???

I always do them one arm at a time, machine or dumbell. For me standing barbell curls are really taxing.

Lately, Ive been doing them sideways on an incline bench and I find this way easier to minimize traps taking over.

I remember Squadfather hated the lateral raise variation where you lean away and do the lateral raise.

And I’m sick and tired of hearing the advice from everyone and their brother on YouTube about not doing front raises because apparently everyone’s front delts are over developed!!

It's not really even correct to call it just a front delt exercise, depends a bit on hand angle. On cables you can hit side delts very well with forward movement. dj put me onto this dude Ryan Humiston and he has a lot of interesting variations for all bodyparts. And keep the androgens elevated.

Yeah, like we've all got over developed front delts and pecs. I wish!

Try with dumbells. More easy on the back.

Half the weight and using only the delts, with no sway, would give the same result, if not better.

Moderate to light weight, highish reps...... "pull" physically and mentally, with your lateral head only, hold for a second or two at the top for peak contraction......(HINT,yOU CANNOT DO THIS WHEN EGO LIFTING SO PUT DOWN THE 80 POUNDERS.... THANK ME LATER)........lower using the power of the lateral head as much as possible.....do not let the weight just fall to the bottom position.....you are supposed to be in control.

I tip mine at the top as if pouring out a liquid........bro-science?.........maybe but I always had good delts.

You are supposed to breath in as you go down, breath out as you go up, and then you yell "LIGHT WEIGHT BABY!!!!" and then its easier.

Almost impossible to eliminate or minimize the trap with side lats.  Thats the function of the trap.

Want to make sure the medial delt is hit more?  Don't go all the way down.  Medial delt kicks in after 15deg of arm abduction (i.e. lifting your arm out to the side).  Total ROM of the muscle is 15 - 90deg of abduction.

It will also 'assist' with the internal rotation (pouring a cup) motion but thats not one of its main roles.  People wonder why side laterals sometimes 'hurt' the shoulder...they most likely have an issue with the supraspinatus muscle (one of the rotator cuff muscles) which initiates arm abduction from 0 - 15 deg.

Great info! Thank you. If someone had issues with scapular winging, would you advise against side raises?

Try with dumbells. More easy on the back.

DJ191 style, just quit the gym and buy some dumbbells and chairs for dips.

So hard on the body 3 sets is all you can take, wuss

i like doing them one arm at a time, standing, holding the other db in other hand for balance... i do curls like this too for a couple sets.. easier to concentrate for me.
