Showing civilians, especially children, would be more of a deterrent. In the US where I live people think war is a video game like you said because the nightly news doesn't really show what is going on.
That worked during the Vietnam War, when we were at times actually committing war crimes. I don't think it works today. We make mistakes, but the overwhelming majority of the people we kill in armed conflict are actual bad guys (soldiers, enemy combatants, terrorists, etc.).
