Sorry if I'm not understand this, but would the question be: If there was just one exercise to do as the ultimate exercise for the whole body, what would it be? My view would be the Squat Clean & push Press. That is one complete compound exercise for the whole body.  Working up to higher rep's, it becomes a true mass and power builder. Good Luck.

I am not the one who asked this question.  I am more interested in the answer and that's what I'm sharing.  What's most interesting is the quote below.  And this is something I have known for a while.  I can attest to this from personal experience.  Squats don't work your biceps and shoulders directly, for example.  But if you squat, you'll create a greater anabolic response which will make you get the most out of the other exercises you might have performed the day before and the day after you squat.  All compound exercises(Squat Clean & push Press, bench press, etc.) trigger a greater anabolic response than isolation exercises.  And of all compound exercises, squats triggers the highest anabolic response.

"Another reason why squats seem to be so effective for packing on sheer size and lean mass is their ability to trigger the highest anabolic hormonal responses during training. A number of studies have demonstrated the barbell squat’s remarkable ability to stimulate an increase in the circulation of growth hormone, IGF-1 and testosterone, more effectively than other exercises."

the bi curl..everybody does it regardless of goals and for some reason people think its more important to have bi's than anything else.

Squating is not the only way to call upon the highest anabolic hormonal responces during training. Can apply a higher rep scheme to the DL, cleans, etc with equal results. A higher quality test & GH release, among other chemicals functions in the body, give the opportunity for muscle mass growth and strength advancements. As far as the squat & push-press goes, that has to be right up there with a select few other superior growing movements. Even in a program without any squating at all, but with exercises like the C&P, DL's, cleans, etc, a subject could expect to make alarming gains.  For the sake of experiment, try a set of 12 to 18 reps of the clean & push-press, starting each rep from the floor. Around the 6th or 8th rep, the important of this exercise should become clean as a whole body and gaining exercise. And very much coupled to the affects that higher rep squats have on the body.

As you stated about the squat,I can witness to the fact that I gained 30lbs in 6 weeks with doing the breathing squats, pullovers,bench & rows as my only exercises in that period. I'm sure also I could have  gained muscle mass on the upper part of my body if I had only done the squat it's self, as you  suggested.  I was 16 at the time and an easy gainer, but never the less, just about anyone could gain pure muscle to some degree. I work with athletes and some have to slap on 10 to 20 lbs in a rather short period of time. The do a squats (heavy breathing style), chest, shoulders, back & abs exercises also. Good Luck.

There are a few, no one in particular. Squats & chins among the best of simple compounds, best of all would be multiple-movements while standing, like clean & jerk for example.

no such thing....for bbing you have to do a variety of excersises...if your wondering the best powerlifting excersise then ya i'd say deads or squats, where you can go super heavy for a max rep. but when it comes to bbing the excersises just work different muscles and it just depends on what order you did that day so i think 10 reps of deads aren't better than 10 reps of rows, but maybe they are if you do the 10 reps of deads after the 10 reps of rows because now there is blood in the muscle. so it all depends, but i don't see a superior excersise in anything that i do.

Definitely the squat or clean and press.  If done correctly,  both hit a variety of muscles in a single rep and help stabilize the core at the same time.  I love 'em!
