Never read Arnold's Encyclopedia, never plan to.  As far as proof; ask any doctor, ask a registered dietician, take a nutrition class at your local college, or just pick up a nutrition textbook and read.  Its not some big secret, its common knowledge.

10 years ago doctors argued that steroids did not build muscle.

Vince dumbum is a registered dietician

Need I say more?

'Common Knowledge' is great if you're looking to build a 'Common Physique'

It's not true. Period. The body can digest and utilize a lot more than that, how much depends on several factors of course. Let's say you were forced to eat only one or two meals a day forcing you to get your daily requirements from that, do you think you could only digest and utilize 30 grams of protein from that one meal? That would be below the minimum daily requirement for most and you would get sick etc. And if you eat say a huge amount of red meat, that takes hours and hours to digest giving the body a chance to utilise it. I could go on and on on this issue but you are wrong.

The notion that all humans, regardless of age, sex, muscularity, and activitly level can all digest the same amount of protein per sitting is just ridiculous.

I remember something Milos wrote, went something like this: Milos was in the burn accident, his doc put him on oxandrolone and told him to eat twice as much protein as he did usually. Milos said he was already eating 400grams or something but the doc said double it anyway.

when you read about the amounts of food that some of these guys eat you have to wonder this, i mean most of the time all these guys are doing is lifting weights for an hour is 500 grams of protein really necessary, i think this is the main reason for the bloated stomachs on most of these guys nowadays.

If your on gear though, you need a huge amount of calories and food from what i understand. Your metabolism, anabolism is supercharged. I think the guys that are on, only get as big according to how much they eat, more so than how much gear they take..I mean everyone is gonna make some gains when on, but they only go so far, then thats it unless you have an awesome diet.

When I was younger I used to pound protein shakes bc I figured they were the answer to getting bigger (in addition to consuming high calorie high protein diet).

About 2 yrs ago, I basically stopped taking protein shakes, nowadays I take maybe one or 2 a week.

I have noticed ZERO deterioration in my strength or conditioning, and lately, due to a better schedule (more sleep) and higher quality diet (more time to cook properly), I've made great gains.

The protein shakes in my opinion are nothing more than good advertising.

its al a conspiracy from magazines to sell more supps. no one in the 50s right up to the 70s who won mr universe took protein shakes. fact.

500g of protein is 2000cals. add yer 400 of carbs (1600) and 100 fat (900) hell of a lot of cals for average trainer.

whoever sed ppl wont accept muscle takes time to build is spot on. i cud add a stone in a wek or 2 if i wanted. none would be muscle

The body can only digest about 30g of protein in one sitting/meal.  Take for example a bodybuilder who eats 6 meals a day and takes in 300g of protein or 50g per meal.  Their body is only really digesting and utilizing 180g of protein, 120g is wasted.  Also, too many people get caught up in the 2g per pound idea.

The RDA is .8g per pound of lean body mass, but the RDA doubled the actual recommendation of .4 (to cover any deviation, and be on the safe side).  So, even at the published RDA you are still above the maintenance level and can build muscle.

I beg to differ.

The body is not 100% efficient at processing anything we eat. That's why we have to use the restroom. Furthermore, building muscle mass is the LAST thing on the body's "to-do" list. There are vital and important functions that the body performs and it utilize protein (and other nutrients) to do that. Only after all of that is done, does it turn its attention to building mass.

Plus, you make the assumption that the body cannot become more efficient at metabolizing protein. I can tell you from personal experience that's not true. I've gone as high as 500 grams of protein per day. But, that was several years ago with a faster metabolism for a limited period of time.

The RDA is for couch potatoes, which most bodybuilders are not. If the body needs extra nutrients to build mass and they are not available, I don't care what the RDA says, YOU AIN'T GROWING, PERIOD!!!!

I can get bigger eating fewer calories than I did 10 years ago. That's one of the reasons I've cut back my usage of my favorite weight-gain powder, N-Large[sup2[/sup]. I needed more calories to reach a certain size. Once I got it, maintaining it (and growing) doesn't require that I inhale as much food.

Okay, so i am a natural freak and all, right? lol.
Anyway  Ill bet i ate no more than a hundred grams of protien a day for the years i was building up.
Many years ago i read an article by mike mentzer that explained muscle was almost all water.  If you dehydrated it and weighed it as pure protien...it was nothing minus bones and organs.

He stated 80 - 150 g a day was plenty.

Where'd you get that from, Mr. Universe winners didn't use protein shakes?

How many times have we read about Larry Scott, singing the praises of one Rheo Blair and his protein powder. It's even been said that Arnold Schwarzenegger himself used Blair's products, despite his working for Joe Weider.

Bill Pearl often used protein shakes as well. Among those three guys I count at least 10 Mr. Universe titles.

Of course the anabolics change all the angles. Supercharging the system i guess.

Trust me gh.   it doesnt take artificial test to bloat.......natural test will do it too.

You say they make you big, smooth and bloated....but thats not fat, just water retention.

Are far as food goes, what macro breakdown for putting on size do you follow? You've stated to eat clean and dirty foods but there has to be a basic protocol you follow....ex.  protein x 1.5-2 bw, carbs 2-3 x bw, etc. or just get in the protein and eat, eat, eat.

Gunter Schliekamp weighs 295lbs onstage and he takes in about 450 grams of protein and 6000 calories a day. He has no gut on stage either. Nobody should need more than that.

I think bodybuilders as a group are way too obsessed with nutrition and eating. Quality muscle is built through hard work in the gym, not by stuffing yourself with protein shakes. It's pretty funny to read about all these guys on the boards who eat 6 meals a day, but they can't even bench press 300 lb. Only a tiny fraction of the protein you ingest will ever be incorporated into muscle tissue. The rest is converted into lipids and carbohydrates. The only way you can increase protein synthesis is by training harder or by taking steroids. Everything else is just a scam.

Yes hard work is needed but lifting is an intensely traumatic on the muscles, tearing it down and depleting them of their various nutrient reserves, not to mention your CNS. Training is only the initial signal, the kickstart mechanism,  for the muscles to grow - how big you actually get after that hinges on your nutrition, hydration, rest and even stress levels for a natural BB.

Carbs and good fats are both anabolic in their own ways yes (too much for me to simply write on a forum post alone) but protein should be the main focus, as when you get right down to it, only the amino acids that constitute protein build muscle itself, not carbs or fat. Thus, protein should be the cornerstone, with a strong emphasis on mainly low-GI carbs (though there are exceptions to the rule when it comes to high-GI carb timing) and to a smaller extent, good fats, in the BB's diet as well.

Do you have any idea how much meat you would have to eat to get in 400 grams of whole food protien, without supplementation?

You would have to eat roughly 10-12, 4 oz. chicken breasts a day, EVERYDAY!  Dont forget heating the meat degrades its protien content so to get 400 grams you would probably have to eat even more than that. I didnt even mention carbs and fats yet!! I personally find it hard to believe that any human being could do this consistantly enough to be of any value, not to mention eating that much food just cant be healthy.

That's why it's called BB; exceptional efforts reap more muscle.
