yeah because band presses are arguably the most common accessory lift for powerlifters. if you've never seen someone lift with bands or even heard of the fuckin thing there's no way you've ever lifted in a gym that wasn't attached to a health club. shit even guys at the local ymca use bands.

it's for top end strength, the bar weighs less at the bottom than it does on the top. it also makes you bench faster because if you push slowly you'll never lock it out. you need to get a lot of speed or the bands will stop you from finishing the lift.

Hmmm, weird, I've never seen it. I've seen the chains many times but never the bands and I've been to some truly hardcore gyms.

It is primarily used by powerlifters who use a shirt because obviously as the weight goes higher the weight gets a lot heavier.  I find it helps with explosiveness since its lighter at the bottom and easier to pause.  Reduces the bounce (in my opinion).  Strengthens the triceps as well.

bullshit. i can bench way more than i can unrack myself. you can't possibly be benching 300 or you'd realize that. did you watch ronnie in cost of redemption and get pissed because he got a lift off doing 495?  ::)

Opposite for me, I can unrack a lot more than I can bench.  He didn't budge it, if I would have taken the weight off the bench it would have slingshotted down into a near fatality....  I'm not getting sued so some kid can try an exercise he knows nothing about.

I use lifts on my sets of 2 so I don't waste energy lifting it off the bench...

No, I trained for years in a couple different hole in the wall gyms that produced powerlifting teams, npc bbs, wrestlers, college athletes, etc....rust, chalk, thrash metal and must.......one gym has been around for decades......good powerlifters produced there, but I have never seen anchored elastic bands and currently I train at Gold's......have trained at traditional gyms, YMCA, health clubs, hole in the wall gyms, outdoor makeshifts gyms, resort gyms, etc.....and I have never seen that.

Yes, chains I have both seen and used, but only at hardcore gyms......elastic bands......have not seen.

i ran into what i'd call the perfect newbie today. kid was no more than 120 pounds and about six feet tall. he put 135 on the bar and needed help to get a rep, so you know what he did? dropped it down to 95 pounds and did a few sets clean. had on a t-shirt and some gym shorts. no wife beater and no bandana. you would have been proud, sar.  ;D

as opposed to the dingus who had 225 on the bar and dropped it on his chest hard as he could, then dumped the plates off of each side because he didn't think collars were necessary.  ::)
you just suggested what i told some dude verbatim, "why not just put a quarter on each side on do it right?"

i didn't suggest anything, that's just what i saw the dude do.

and yeah, mos. i'm sure you did. all those great powerlifting teams, never saw a band used once. that's likely. did i tell you i used to train with professional boxers and never saw a speedbag until i saw a rocky movie?  ::)

i'm glad you're humble enough to admit that you haven't seen bands. what's hilarious is that you expect anyone to believe you've trained for years in hardcore gyms without seeing them once or even knowing what the fuck they are. "man of steel", overcompensating for a shitty physique much?  ::)

MisterMagoo....quick dose of reality....just cause you use a piece of "powerlifting equipment" doesn't make you a powerlifter......adding "elastic bands" to your 90lb barbell doesn't impress.   I don't need to compensate for anything cause I've done everythign I've ever said; further, I especially have no lackings when compared to a little fingered pussy like you AHAHAHAHAHAH!!!    Your use of "elastic bands" makes you look like more of a queer than anything else; in fact, I'm sure the only elastic bands you've ever used came with your candyass Bowflex.

Yes, the high school punks are funny, but pwning the young college kids is better cause they think they own the fucking place.   I love working in sets with college kids on the lat pulldown and after their shouting, brutal 8 rep sets of 110lb pulldowns I casually load 3/4 of the stack and perform 15 rep sets of pushdowns while they quietly sulk away in a defeated cloud of rude awakening.

If you are being serious then you have some serious problems.

Bands and chains are a relatively new fad. I've never seen anyone actually use them in a gym. They seem to be very popular amongst the bench shirt crowd, but I doubt they do much for raw bench strength. They certainly aren't necessary for building a big bench.

bands are "new" meaning in the last decade but chains have been around for as long as chains have been around. they help not only for shirted benchers but for guys who have lockout problems. if you have a lot of power off your chest but you tend to stop halfway up bands can be a great help. aside from giving you more power at the top half of the lift they help you get extra speed off the bottom to blow through that sticking point.

if you're the type who stops right on the chest then bands aren't doing shit for you.

Maybe we can all agree that ridiculing the weaker and less knowledgeable is not the most direct route to maximizing one's own physical potential.  ::)

Dude, Mr. Magoo is practically an institution here - he doesn't post much but when he does I can gurantee you he speaks the truth. His insight and overall knowledge are assets here, unlike childish name-calling and band-bashing

MOS are you fucking kidding me? band press, you take a bench and put thick elastic bands on the bar and anchor them to the floor either by a peg or a heavy dumbbell. for someone who constantly tries to "own" people you're pretty goddamn stupid.
hey "mister magoo" don't talk about owning specialists like Man of Steel like that, he owns little pillow biters like you more often than he pounds your sister and that's pretty damn often, now go have your boyfriend give you a colonoscopy.
