Whey Protein and My 5 Year Old Kid
« on: July 14, 2006, 10:10:03 AM »
"RJ" is 5 and insists he is in training to become an Ultimate Fighter.  During my workouts he hits the heavy bag and does curls with a broom handle.  After my workout, when I am slugging down a whey protein shake he asks for one too (its GNC 100% whey with nothing else in it, no creatine etc).  I don't see the problem and give him a full scoop (20g).

My wife worries, however.  I assure here there is nothing wrong with it and in fact, most kids don't get enough protein in their diet (how much protein is there in tater tots, mac n' cheese and apple juice? not much).

Am I missing something? If anybody knows any reason, any at all, why I shouldn't give him a whey protein shake now and then, please let me know.

I see no reason not to allow kids whey.  It's a complete protein and should be acceptable provided they are not allergic to dairy proteins.  Infant formulas often contain whey protein, including special formulas for premature infants.

If he likes to drink it then cool, maybe throw some ice cream in it and make him a malt at night or just ice and a fruit. When you don't have time to make him some finish some carnation instant breakfast drink and throw some in there for him to use at breakfast with his milk easier to mix, taste good.

I would not go over 25grams though for one sitting, kid is 5 and you dont want him having stomach problems, later on.

yeah, I meant to mention that B4, cuz I thought 20g seemed a bit much for a 5 year old.

He probably just wanna drink what daddy drinks. So just use a smaller scope, put in a little banana or something... whey is just leftovers from manufacturing cheese.

Yeah just left over curd, see if he eats cottage cheese ;D if he does then wow

My little cousins and nieces love my protein bars and rice cakes, also like muscle milk by muscletech it does taste like chocolate milk though.

I dont think the cell tech is to bad, just the amount of sugar if it's at night or when you have to watch him, might get rowdy

I'm sitting here giggling over what MidniteRambo and trulytoned have written. That's funny.

I don't see any problems with allowing children to drink whey protein shakes, as long as you don't give them too much protein. Kids grow like weeds, ...they need the nutrients to support their growth.

Providing good solid nutrition to a child in his/her formative years will provide them with huge benefits in the years to come. A body built on a proper foundation of good nutrition will take a person far into their later years. Afterall... With Good Nutrition, ...Good Things Happen!  ;D

I can't eat my protein bars in front of my 2 yr old any more, cause she will just have to have one. She won't just take a bite of mine any more, she has to have a whole one, and then makes a total mess of it. Oh what has my life become; hiding protein bars from a 2 yr old :'(

My 5 year old boy loves my whey protein. I put the water and a scoop in the shaker and he shakes it for me the take a drink. I don't mind giving him a few sips, but don't want him to have too much for his stomach to digest. Hell his little chewy vitamins sit on top of the fridge next to my BCAA's and vitamins.

How old does a kid have to be to start some light lifting, like the 2 to 5 lbs rubber weights?

As long as you train with your kid in a controlled manner (perfect form, not too much weight on the bar etc.) then you can put him on a normal program like 3 days a week and it won't effect his height or anything... would probaly be good for the boy
