blood pressure
« on: August 16, 2006, 04:12:31 PM »
anybody get their blood pressure checked recently? I had a routine physical yesterday and it was a little high- something like 130/70. Just curious what other members' BP is.

130/70 isn't high, it's actually quite normal.  Anything above 140/90 is considered hypertensive, but you are fine.

In this range, you should be fine:

Systolic: 120-140

Diastolic: 60-90

Anything below those ranges can be reasons to be concerned due to the potential of hypotension and anything above can be signs of hypertension.

My blood pressure changes all the time.  One reading will be 115/74, the next one 25 minutes later will be 138/89... there's no consistency to it at all.  Even doctors don't get consistent readings. So if someone asks me if I have high blood pressure, I really don't know.  :-\

Mines 140 over 80.  Sometimes after a set of some heavy lift a feel like my chest is going to explode.

Dudes, you should all be under 120, that is optimum. You will live longer and the health of your kidneys and liver will benefit. Seriously make it  a goal to get under 120 dudes, its harder on gear, but it should be a priority. Just do it.

Actually the standard was re-evaluated within the last year or two.

Here is the current information from the American Heart Association...

Well I really can't explain my blood pressure being what it is since aside from eating a perfect diet as well as exercising and not using drugs, my stress levels are usually low - although maybe that is the issue.  I really don't see what I can change because my lifestyle is practically perfect.

You should take an EKG and then a stress test, the one where they put you on a treadmill. You might have some heart damage, valve damage or blockages, There is stuff you can do to fix it if you catch it early on.... you will be happy you did. Not to scare you, but blood pressure is serious business, it is a direct predictor of how long and how healthy you will live.  Definitely have it checked out dude.

Maybe you over 'bulked'.

yeah, i decided that i may need to do a bit more cardio and get my weight down a slight bit. i'm natural, so it can't be gear. having said that, my BP isn't extremely high, just a bit above normal. however, there is a history of hypertension and heart disease on both sides of my family, so it is something i should take seriously

of course, the doc thought heavy lifting is bad for you  :-\ i don't agree that is the real problem though. i think cardio, diet, and cutting back on drinking is the best solution

I took an EKG in 2004 for interest sake and everything was fine.  As for the rest, I haven't done so yet.
Cool, but EKG's are pretty amatuer. They don't tell much, they can completely miss a blockage in one of your arteries. I never new that and was pissed when I found out. Docs will only give you the stress test if you complain of chest pain or something cause their trying to save money for the insurance companies, fuck them, demand to have a stress test, a nuclear stress test is actually the most accurate so see if you can get that one. No reason to save money for insurance companies.

There is no way that if your systolic is 120 that you are prehypertensive. That is BS. They just want to sell more meds. Same with your cholesterol.

Willie,

Alcohol is a very important factor in blood pressure issues.

drinking alcohol gives you high blood pressure?

I haven't had mine checked in a while, but mine has always been right on target.  For being a scrawny fat guy, I have been blessed with good health, knock on wood.

It is well advised that everyone go to a doctor and get a physical every year. High Blood pressure and High Cholesterol are the two biggest factors leading to heart disease, which the physical will check for. A simple pill each day will reduce your blood pressure and/or cholesterol to normal levels allowing you to live to a ripe old age. Otherwise you may have a future of heart attacks, bypass surgery and an early death.
