This will be a true test.

The webcast needs to have the quality of a regular PPV, and not just in the sense of the stream.

But also in sense of overall production.

Don't expect this PPV to be a huge cash cow though, that will come in the coming years, when the production has gained the necessary trust of the consumers.

In a few years, Mr Olympia may very well be viewed live by more people than ever before.

Having it on a Webcast will make DVD sales go down if they are able to copy to their computers.  And I bet the Olympia will be on the internet within a week easy for free somewhere.  PPV is very expensive to produce.  Very expensive.  The one thing that may limit the webcast quality is the use of multiple cameras.  Quality will definitely be lessened.  At least they are doing it though.  If you have an old computer with a slow internet connection and low RAM and crappy video card I would think the webcast may not be a good thing.  I'd like to see it though just to see the quality.

IMO, and this is nothing against the IFBB or anything, being able to put the O on the tv, so I can watch while I post or work, is way better than online.  You don't have to worry about losing the feed, you can tape it, you don't have to glue up your computer for 2 hours (ever tried a huge graphic project while watching a webcast?  Both suck.

I know the $ is not there and the webcast beats nothing at all.

There have been some feeds from our national TV that looked real good.

The concern about watching the Olympia while working at the same time...

I know what you're saying, the possibilities of multitasking becomes limited - but if you pay a PPV, aren't you gonna sit down for 2 hours to watch it?

I sure would.

And I also believe they should allow for d/l's of the webcast.

I also share onlyme's concern regarding the slow computers.

A way around this would be to sell a limited PPV, for those with limited bandwidth or limited hardware, ie lesser video quality to a lower price.

Clearly, they need to address that situation.

The way the production comes across this first year is crucial IMO.

This is a product that will be suitable for broadband users only.

The in-demand rebroadcast *should* be available as a solid download, but knowing the people who run this stuff, it will be sold as a stream.

That said, there are plenty of software packages that enable one to record streaming media.

You're right when you say that they aren't going to make a ton of money with this thing, but they are going to make a lot.

The NPC should actually take advantage of the available technology and sell annual PPV webcast subscriptions.  Just guessing, but they could probably make an extra $250,000 a year, depending on the number of events broadcast.

i haven't laid down on the couch to watch tv in about a year lol...

I can see the tv from my computer.  I'm online 24/7.  I live in this chair.  Any moment there is a commercial or boring part in a show I'm watching, I'm posting or coding.

yeah, I was going to say something but didn't want to be a negative guy.  If the company does drop the ball and the webcast for $25 ends up sucking, they can have every excuse in the book but it won't matter.  We will all be forced to mail them samples of random bodily fluids.  It's the best way to tell people you're dissatisfied.
Right.
So for $25 does the buyer get the live stream + the DVD?

Not such a good deal just paying for stream if I wanted to pay for a live stream and sit at mycomputer for 4 hours Id rather watch free porn, would not pay over $12 for intenet porn stream bodybuilding show

I sure hope they have everything worked out prior to the Olympia weekend and that this isn't their first webcast.  The bodybuilding.com webcasts have been getting better with each attempt imho.  Perhaps they should try and webcast one of the shows happening prior to olympia and throw that one in if you pre-order the olympia webcast...who knows though maybe they have been doing non bodybuilding webcasts and will put out a great stream/show.

Come you guys. Think beyond the often archaic ways of the bodybuilding industry. These types of webcasts happen all the time and done VERY well.

Take a look at this site: http://blueroom.att.com/mainstage/index.php to see how it can be done and done well.

If you're not going to the event it's worth the money.

Put more information on various Olympia Weekend stuff here...

http://www.getbig.com/olympiaweekend/2006/olympia2006.htm

The webcast, if done right, will be very cool, and fully paid customers should have access to 7 day archives so you can enjoy it again.  14 Hours for one price is an excellent deal, especially if you cant make the trip out to Las Vegas!
