building THICKER triceps
« on: August 30, 2006, 10:06:18 AM »
my biceps are progressing so fast that they're starting to overpower my tris' in alot of poses...instead of the 2/3 tri to 1/3 bi split it's about 50/50

my current routine is: cable press downs for 2 sets of 10 with 230lbs on the stack
skull crushers(cambered bar extensions) for 2 sets of 10 with 220lbs
light kickbacks to failure for a set

day two would be....closed grip benches for 3 sets with one warmup and two sets of 10 with 315
cable press downs or seated tricep press machine for two sets of 10 with 230 on the cable or 360 on the press down machine
follow that up with one set to failure with one arm cable press downs

Great lifts! How does your training intensity for triceps compare to bis?

skull crushers with 220lbs?? for 10? so basically you could do a skull chrusher with 225 on the bench press for 1. if thats true, that is pretty insane.

same if not more so..i hit them hard to help with my benching which is paying big dividends...my bicep days are just as impressive. but i can almost curl the same amount i press down... :-\

i've gotten a pm suggestion saying i should hit them only on one day for 10-12 total sets and that's it since i'm benching twice a week and hitting my tri's twice a week...

make sense? or no? if they're being over worked then that case should fall into my biceps too but they keep growing.

lol let me clarify that that's on a weighed machine stack..i highly doubt i can do that with a straight bar on a flat bench.  The machine reads hammer strength french press which i've always been told is  the same as a skull crusher. The machines handle is a cambered bar.  No it's not as impressive as it sounds. I've done them with free weights on a cambered bar with 90lbs a side but it's impossible to do alone without a training partner. So they have a machine that feels just as good without the nut shaking fear factor involved with it. My training has all come from the advice given here and what i've read and learned on my own as to how my body responds...but when i can't figure shit out i come here and ask my questions.  Usually someone with more experience will pick up on something that i may have missed in the read outs. I've contemplated on writing an article for this forum on my training methods for benching...those of you might remember how my bench has been flying up to the point where now my working rep range is now 340-365 where not even a month or so ago it was 300-330.  It's another reason why i'm asking this question.  With all that weight I figured i'd be busting shirts...and all i'm doing is stretching them.  :(

Start doing some serious excersises like weighted dips.

Lever=inferieur
With the legpress I can press over +1000lbs, but I can barely squat half of the weight. Same for french-press. Nice stack, does jackshit.

And another question,
how much do you weigh if you're able to do cable press downs with 220 ? Do you sit on it?

oh ok gotchya! and stretching shirts is good too don't think you'll wake up the next morning and the shrit that was baggy on you yesterday is going to be like 2nd skin today. it takes time. as for your Tris I say hit them once a week with a different workout everytime, my last Tri workout was dumbell extensions, rope pulldowns, closegrip press. Today its time to hit them again and im going to do straight bar pushdowns, skulls, dips.

how much do i weigh? 215....i'm trying to get to 230 before i cut down to 210 or so for fighting.

i stopped doing weighted dips when i thought i pinched my dick off when the belt slid into my crotch the last time i tried...so i switched to the seated pressdowns...i hafta tie myself down into it and can move just as much if not more weight that way.

Garbage generalizations. Only amateurs obsess on the weight used on machine when it's primarily about feeling the muscle, the mind-muscle connection and only then the amount of weight used. Some of the best exercises i've ever used involved good leverage machines.

It's smarter not to even bring up the amount of weight used on a machine because the actual resistance varies so widely between different machines that it only confuses the whole issue amongst those who don't understand that some machines are good and some aren't. They get all befuddled trying to figure out why the poundages don't jive with free weights when it really doesn't matter.

Find exercises that hit the desired areas effectively, without any preconceptions as to which forms of resistance are better, then work over time to increase the poundages on those exercises.

Garbage generalizations....

I hope I didn't offend you ;D I know you like lever

And I understand your point about levermachine and the difference about the actual resistance, but we have this press,
http://nautilusinc.com/consumer_catalog_primary/opl_brands/nautilus/commercialuse/strength/nautilusxpload/lowerbody/prdcd~NSP3ILP/Nautilus+XPLoad+Incline+Leg+Press.jsp
and that ain't a bad one.

He asked how he can get bigger triceps, I told him my view,
drop the levermachine, and start doing compoundexcersise so he won't hit specific targets, but the whole muscle including supporting muscles.

And about weight,
we assume that he's using the correct form,
and then it does matter. He doesn't use any kind of specific technique like slow, ultra-slow, power, whatever.

awesome lifts bro.. This sound but you might want to bump down the weight and feel the tris working.. or try some shockers i.e. supersets, trisets and drop sets. to reach those fibers that you didn't with the heavy stuff.

Parallel Bar Dips,  Bent arm pullover & press,  45*Rope Exts. w/ rope or cambered v-bar
