90 degree BOR is very inefficient,
you're putting to much stress on your lower back and that becomes the weakest point.

Dorian Yates stated a long time ago, preferably 30-60 degree angle.

If you want flat,
try the following construction;
You can use a regular bar, but the ROM will be a bit smaller.

want to know a little secret?

you'll get bigger gains in your back if you find and angle that takes the stress OFF the lower back when doing them.

Depends on the person, just do what's comfortable.

When you start using serious weight in the bent over rows it's almost impossible to hold a 90 degree position. Even doing one arm rows you need to brace the body with the free hand. Your not going to get a massive back dong strict 90 degree rows. It's not so much the effect on the lower back or hams, as it is a question of keeping body balance. The secret is, there are no secrets when doing extra heavy bentover rows. Those DL rows/Hi-pulls that most off the Pro's do, though not pretty to look at, are the standard style for some very big and massive men. Good Luck.

Come on, you can do better than :-*

The heavier you go,
the bigger the stress on a wrong place. You're familiar with these kind of calculations of lifting techniques?;

Your core is the weakest part of your body, it becomes the restricting factor,
look to excersises like deadlift and squat, you start using a belt to keep everything intact. For BOR, you can go really heavy with an smaller angle,
or you can go very deep using a bench, with this technique you eliminate the influence of your lower back, and you can't cheat with the last reps.

Bent way over is best for me, but I've seen such a variance in what's comfortable that it's unwise to make unequivocal assumptions, other than to suggest what might be better. Lots of pros use a position that's close to standing up which is strange to me. 90 degree rows worked for me only when I had the head or upper body braced, to mitigate the pressure.

for me it depends what grip im going to use, if i do overhand barbell rows im more at a 90 degree angle, but if I do underhand grip, I stand at a steeper angle.

Seen too many sore backs or worse from barbell rows. I have found that one arm dumbell rows with your free arm resting on your thigh as you are bent over takes a tremendous amount of strain off your lower back.

Believe me, YOU DONT WANT A LOWER BACK INJURY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT AINT WORTH IT. Do one arm rows instead.     :)

Agreed-excepting T-bars I find that anything with the back braced to keep it from moving is more effective for hitting the lats.

Yates was strict and had size and thickness equal to Ronnie.
He wasn't strict at all; he was almost standing up; it almost looked like he was doing deadlifts.

I did them today. The version I use is called "Pendaly Rows", and yes, you will nto be able to use as much weight but I think its worth it. I do them as explosively as I can, arching my back on the way up, and hitting the bar above the belly button. On the way down the bar is set back on the ground and deloaded completely.

I don't think barbell rows done in the traditional 45 - 70 degree fashion even come close to the effectiveness of the Pendaly Row, atleast if you're trying to hit the lats. Ofcourse chins/pullups will hit the lats much better than rowing exercises, but 90 degree rowing takes the cake when it comes to Barbell Rowing (IMO).

I prefer to do one-arm rows. You can work your lats with very heavy weights without having to sacrifice form. Barbell rows will tear your lower back to pieces if you go too heavy.
hahahahahahahahahahahaha

As was discussed in another thread, the concensus seems to be that the BB row is overrated, IMO because without the back braced it doesn't force the type of lat isolation experienced with hammer rows, one-arm rows, BB rows with the head or back braced, etc. In terms of free weights, T-bars seem a lot more effective than BB rows as well.

Never think of chins/pullups/pulldowns as substitutes for rows, they hit different areas.

in pumping iron they were doing 90 degree bent over rows. they were even using those step ups for extra height so they could get an even greater stretch. ive done t bars and bent over rows at a 90 degree angle but with lighter weight and its a good change from being more upright. but for the most part i would stick with a more upright position.
