not training biceps for a while?
« on: September 05, 2006, 08:07:35 PM »
Hi
To make it short, one shoulder is giving me really troubles.
I have a tendinitis of the long head of the biceps.
Have seen doctors, only solution is rest, they say.
So I took some rest (6 months), do some stretching but it's still there.

I wonder if giving up biceps work for a while would be bad idea.
I could perhaps make my triceps a strong bodypart.
But could the unbalance between the strentgh of the triceps and biceps could lead
to more joint problems?

I had the same problem....took off 6 weeks of direct BI work. Then i hit them evey 2-3 weeks. I'm back to a normal Bi work and I'm much stronger with no forearm or pain like u have. Just watch other movements. I deadlift heavy so i relied more on wraps. I stopped pull ups as well. U don't need six months but u need to baby them. I began to roll my dumbells to save tweaking my forearms. Little stuff will get u back in the game pretty quickly

Let me get it straight,
you have rested for over 6 months know, and the pain is still there? Go see your docter again. A surgical operation could relieve the pain.

surgery might help but:

1. are you warming up the muscle before training it?  not just the biceps, are you doing cardio to bring up your body temp?

2. are you stretching your biceps between sets?

3. are you icing the area where you have tendonitis after each workout and twice more each day?

I admit I'm doing the cardio warm up before. Will do in the future

2. are you stretching your biceps between sets?
no, only stretching shoulders and pectorals muscles. Will it help?

I have begun doing it

About the surgery. I don't live in the usa and such a thing seems uncommon where I live. It seems really considered as the last thing to do or when you're an elite sportsman.

What surprises me is that the inflammation did not go away even when the shoulder and biceps were left unsollicited.

I think after 6 months the time has come.

Normal treatment over here in the Netherlands,
rest, after a while you can get medications,
you also have to massage the place,
no result,
physiotherapist will show you certain excercise a couple of times with light weights that you will perform at home,
no results,
local injections,
no results
last but not least surgery.

I don't know in what country you live, but I don't think other developed countries differ much from this.

HavenBull...now that was funny!

CQFD might have a case of nerve damage which can form a parntership with tendinitis. Inflammation can be a major clue to a nerve injury. Before any surgery (the last resort) you may want to consider a sports massage, Rolfing and other forms of medical deep tissue massage. Some of the Asian style massages (Shiatsu for example, as well as some Yoga methods) can work very well. A few of my athlete friend hold acupuncture in high regard. Deep injections, with very long needles, are not lasting and may only mask the problem for a short period. Ice/heat are only short range solutions.

I wonder if you pain starts when you grip a bar or when you do an actual direct bicep curl?

In  your training you might consided exercises that do not affect the biceps directly. Like rows, upright rows, pulldowns, cable work, etc.. I would not even consider doing any direct triceps work either for awhile, also. Those heavy compound exercise can work the bicep/triceps quite well in a indirect way.

In any event if the above suggestions do not work well for you than the last option may be corrective surgery. In the U.S. it's quite a common operation, takes little time and the recovery period can be somewhat short. Good Luck.
