I've read that saunas should be used a few hours after your workout. Sauna immediately after is too taxing and not as good for restoration.

Saunas is normal in Europe. Pretty much every gym I've been to have them. It's not more gay than sharing a lockerroom with other guys. Most people like the feeling of being in a sauna for a while. Give it a shot and see if you like it.
