i wouldnt say mike is one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time...but his contributions to the sport are.

high intensity...heavy weight to failure and beyoned.

he talked alot how overtraining impedes progress...which has proven to be true.

overtraining was common back in his day... even today some morons still want to spend 1:30 -2 hrs trianing...lol

In his prime I'd say he was better than Arnold at his best, his physique was more complete. He should have definetely won in 1980.

I must say Mike Mentzer is one of my all time favorites. You can say what you want about his training methods, but he contributed a lot of thought provoking ideas that made people really think twice about the way they train. In era when overtraining was common in most circles, Mike offered you alternative.

I love how you have this big, bold statement as the subject of your thread.  I read it and expected a ton of pictures and a big writeup.

One picture and a link to a video.  Wow.

Monster tribute!

I don't necessarily think Mentzer should've won the 1980 Olympia, but he was certainly better than 5th place.  He should've at least beaten Coe and Zane, and maybe placed as high as 2nd.

Nevertheless Mike was one of my first bodybuilding heroes when I was a teenager and read M&F for the first time in 1979.  The pics of him and Casey Viator training together just looked unreal to me.  I never knew real live people could look like that!

His sordid stint in the world of gay for pay aside, he was a good BBer.

WHAT GAY FOR PAY? WHEN AND WHERE DID YOU EVER HEAR OR SEE HIM DOING ANYTHING LIKE THAT?

How did he die???

mike had a congential heart defect and died from a heart attack...his brother ray died shortly after that.

their father died from the same condition around the same age as mike and ray.

Mike was a very complexed guy. Interesting to note that he never competed again after the 1980 O. Mentally he was shot by the injustice of it all.

Fantastic Physique. I loved the photos of the universe in 1977 or 1978 when he had a perfect score. Anybody got any photos of that show?

awesome triceps. if his biceps were on par his arms would have blitzed arnold's.

that was the most accentuated difference between arnold and mike - biceps.

ok, chest too.

maybe lat width too, but that's it. everything else goes to mentzer.

I wouldn't say his biceps were a problem. They were massive and proportionate to the rest of him. His chest was a bit oddly shaped and flat but still quite large and a thicker back could have done him good in 1980.

nah, his biceps weren't a problem as such. they just weren't freaky massive and poppin like arnolds, but no one's perfect.
