Title: Lifting thread
Post by: Always Sore on July 09, 2007, 05:58:23 AM
I think I remember why I started coming here and was curious if we are going to shape this clubhouse into something different for the bunch of us how about a thread about lifting or working out that is serious? No random attacks or flaming (unless someone is bullshitting) just the bunch of us having a place to talk about what we like or don't about the gym rat life?

You can but it takes a lot of Big Macs.. ;D

I used to do the heavy/light route but for me found I was at the gym all the time and my immune system was always low and I never felt like I was recovering.

NO it's not... ;D Like the rest of us thats all you want till you do it and then it's HMMM 400 for a double and 20 reps 275 is up next. ;D

i ain't too far i don't think. if i started off fresh i'm pretty sure i'd hit 225 for over 20. i'm in the 340-350 area for a single depending on how i feel. there's just that mental barrier when you put a 25 on each side. like going from a 305 bench to a 315 bench.

NO it's not... ;D Like the rest of us thats all you want till you do it and then it's HMMM 400 for a double and 20 reps 275 is up next. ;D

hahaha, that's just by summer. end of the year i'd love to hit 405 once and get 275x20. my best currently is 9.  :-\

I am having the same issue with squats. I know I should be able to and can dance up close to my barrier but nope. I have been trying walk outs to get my mind comfortable with the idea of the weight. Half the time I swear it's all in my head.

Funny I get that all the time in my job but no. I did not even go over 200 until I left the corp in 90 when I was 22. Used to be all cut and good looking but got tired of the life... ;D It's been a slow march up, plus it's not like I am 2% body fat either, but at 6'3 I still feel thin like. ;D I make the joke to people I started out as a Linebacker size and keep moving closer to the ball the older I get.

i talk with powerlifters on other boards. even when i was 270 i felt small when it was next to guys like tone barbaccio who's about 6'4" and 350 or this fucker named hat who's a legit 7' tall and over 400 pounds.

Lifts have been going a lot better lately but I've had to do abs more and cut back on the heineken.

As much shit as people love to talk about powerlifters being fat, having a little more fat sure makes the lifts easier and recover times better. There must be some optimum level that supports immume function and recovery.

Now.. If I cold only stop dehydrating myself every morning with an assload of coffee.

I stay pretty consistent, espically since I went to one on one off but I figure the time I miss is sometimes better for me mentally. Sometimes espically the older I get the more rest I can get the better I feel overall.

might be psychosomatic. i lost a wrist wrap a while ago and everything over 225 felt like it was going to make my wrists snap. then i stopped using them at all and now unless i'm doing heavy pin presses or board presses i'm fine.

going heavy on walking lunges messes up the point of em, i think. look at any pro, they go light as hell on them. ronnie uses 185-225, a lot of guys rarely go over 135.

last time i did them i used 115 and it was plenty if you're going more than 10 or 11 steps.

Had a really good back and Arms workout yesteday. I know it's gay but after reading all about Milos workout/amino supplement stuff I am trying to follow his lead. I am not spending the cash on his stuff to much money. Just a modified version of EAA's + creatine + glutimine/taurine/NO+ some gatorade. Had a great pump but not sure if that had anything to do with it or placebo effect.

IMO It depends on what type of program you are working at. I tend to get down to 1-3 reps on something like bench pressing almost every workout lately since I am working to move my strength levels up. With my schedual if I did it on a Monday I would not hit it again until Sunday. That seems to be more then enough time for everything to get back to normal (soreness/CNS/ect). I think for most people (younger) you could get that down to about 3 days. Much quicker then that and I don't think you can recover enough to progress.

it's also easier to recover from bench maxing than, say, squat/pull maxing. i've been doing a lot of doubles and singles lately and while my bench is doing fine, my squat and pull aren't so i'm taking a few weeks of just triples without a belt.

Not sure if I agree with you. I think all out effort no matter big or small muscle group recovery is about the same. It just feels worse when your whole back/shoulders/traps/forearms/ect are sore from deads as opposed to just chest/shoulders/tri's. Legs for me always kill me regardless.

it's a CNS thing, not just muscular recovery. i never get sore any more except when i'm hammering out a particular muscular imbalance (lagging shoulders now  >:( ), but you burn out hard if you're pulling heavy singles week after week unless your recovery is particularly efficient and you eat/sleep a lot. i could pull all day long when i was eating like a horse and didn't mind my 40" waist, but these days i have to take some deload time even though my bench is doing fine.

No I agree I was talking whole recovery package. I agree you can't keep doing it week after week, I was thinking from the start we were talking about a cycle. 8-12 weeks progressing followed by some down time and lighter lifting for a couple of weeks before starting over. I do think you can get your body to change if you keep working at a consistent level and push yourself but you do reach a point of burn out. Even sleep and food do not seem for me to break the cycle of feeling worn.

ah, yeah i agree there. i meant working in the 95% of 1RM area every week will just kill you after a while. especially with dieting, it left me barely able to get 2 reps with what used to be easy warmup.

For some reason right or wrong thats the way I thought your suppose to do it.

I have always found sometimes you need to try it on yourself and see if it works for you. If you max then wait a couple of days and come back as strong if not more and can push hard, then keep forcing your body and muscle to do so. If you try it and come back weaker or you feel overtrained or stressed then it does not work. You really can't take what works for person A and fit it to person B, only concepts and ideas can be adapted and tried. Plus whats the harm if you try and nothing happens..you just learned what does not work and know not to do it and try something different.

Just keep in mind that they like everything need time to recover. Better to have one good workout where you feel and squeeze the muscle thru you're reps then to just do something for the sake of doing more. Find a couple of different exersices that work for you and keep nuging the weight up, but keep the form ture...wow that sounds like stupid flex magazine advice..LOL but really it's true.

Are you doing any of the big "3" (close grip benching/dips/skull crushers) ?

Yup,do all the big 3.my arms are just real hard gainers.I usually wait at least 3 days before
I hit a body part again but I just don't wanna go to the gym and just do bi's :)

Do bi's with Calves or Hams. IMHO arms have much more to do with your bodyweight and body structure that other parts. I have long gorilla arms and it is always a issue to build them. But for me I have found that if I spend more time on back/chest and less on arms my arms tend to get bigger as I go up in weight. Now if we are talking bi peak..I am a genitic loser... ;D

Thanks man, but for someone my size I am way to weak. I would really like to get to the point of 6-8 reps on the big 3 at 500 each. I think one of the problems is I work out by myself and though I push it there are times when I think having a partner would push me harder. The other night I was working in with a guy at the gym who is a very strong guy. He is old school and it made me push myself more. If I did that more offten I think I could do it.

Tonight is probably gonna be chest, but I'm also feeling hams/calves.   It's Monday so every "once a week Rambo" will be charging into Gold's, grabbing the first available flat bench, throwin a 45 on either side and attempting to rep it 5 times....this will go on for hours.....may be hams/calves.

Yes, my school gym is like that. Every Monday night all 8 power racks are occupied by the 110 pound iron warriors working off their huge weekend gains off Dubra and Natty Light.

I can't stand that shit.....it was same when I was in school.   Atmosphere in the gym was great, but the number of peons trying to rep 135lbs everytime they walked in the door was sickening.  There's something about men, a bench and the need to put at least one 45 per side on that bar whether they can lift it or not.

hahaha, last Friday I was in there and was using the shoulder press rack across from the power racks. Kid was benching with a 25 and 5 on each side and dropped it on his chest. I thought he was going to get it up so I sat there watching him for like 20 seconds. Then when I saw no one else was helping him, I walked over and helped him out. I then proceeded to curl it for a set of 58 while he looked on in disbelief. Everything but the last sentence is true. Was pretty funny. I've dropped weights on myself before without a spot but I thought weights that low were reserved for titties like Noc.

The worst is when I got trapped in a leg press.   Was doing toe presses for calves on a leg press and didn't have but maybe 500-600 lbs on it.   Normally I just leave the sled locked and use the upper half of the range of movement for calf work.   Well that fvckin night I unlocked the sled for some reason and when I got finished with my set for calves I let it come down quickly to rest on what I lock was a locked sled....eh heh.   Had to call 3 friends to bail me out like a dumbass.....I've never forgotten since.

I've done something similar while training legs on the leg press.   I had about 900lbs loaded and I cinched my belt real tight (LOL and don't gimme that "why you got a belt on on the leg press"), got to the 8th rep and then everything went black across my eyes for a second like I had blacked out....it's happened a couple other times.
