Connecticut Senate: A Slow, Steady Move to Toss Up
September 16, 2010
________________________ ________________________ _______
The contest between Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon has been gradually closing over the past few months, and is now in single digits, according to some polls.
A Quinnipiac University poll (September 8-12 of 875 likely voters) gave Blumenthal a six-point lead over McMahon, 51 percent to 45 percent. They were statistically tied among independents, with Blumenthal taking 47 percent to 46 percent for McMahon, and among men where McMahon had a one-point advantage, 48 percent to 47 percent. Blumenthal enjoyed a 56-percent to 41-percent lead among women voters. Blumenthal’s job ratings were 70-percent approve to 26-percent disapprove. As impressive as these numbers are, his ratings in January were 84-percent approve to 11-percent disapprove. Blumenthal’s favorable/unfavorable ratings were 55 percent to 39 percent while McMahon’s were 45 percent to 41 percent. This poll looks a lot different than a January Quinnipiac survey that gave Blumenthal a 41-percent advantage over McMahon, 64 percent to 23 percent.
Democrats countered the release of the Quinnipiac numbers with a survey conducted by Hamilton Campaigns for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at the same time the Quinnipiac poll was in the field (September 8-12 of 800 likely voters). This poll gave Blumenthal a 15-point lead over McMahon, 54 percent to 39 percent. Blumenthal’s job ratings were 70 percent to 27 percent, and his favorable/unfavorable ratings were 61 percent to 34 percent, which were higher than President Obama’s 55-percent to 43 percent ratings. McMahon had a favorable rating of 48 percent and an unfavorable rating of 46 percent. Democratic strategists further argue that they’ve seen no erosion in Blumenthal’s job approval or favorable ratings over the course of the last few months.
We don’t doubt the Hamilton Campaigns’ numbers; it is a respected firm with a solid track record. At the same time, though, we are aware of Republican polling that has the race in the high single digits, though neither the McMahon campaign, nor the National Republican Senatorial Committee has released a survey. And, when all the polling taken in the race is considered, it is clear that McMahon has made slow but steady and consistent progress against Blumenthal. According to the Pollster.com trend line, McMahon now trails the Attorney General by seven points, 43 percent to 51 percent, in all general election ballots tests conducted in the race.
Democrats’ main argument against McMahon centers on professional wrestling, particularly its darker side that includes substance abuse and allegations of illegal steroid use. They believe that their case is bolstered by the premature deaths of three former wrestlers in the past several weeks. Democrats hit McMahon on wrestling almost daily and the media constantly grills her on the topic. They believe that it will be McMahon’s undoing at the end of the day, particularly among women voters who make up a slim majority of the electorate. According to the Quinnipiac poll, Blumenthal’s 15-point lead among women tends to support their argument.
Wrestling will remain a topic for the next seven weeks and eventually either Blumenthal or a Democratic independent expenditure campaign will start airing television ads devoted to wrestling. Still, given how omnipresent wrestling has been in the race for months, we are surprised that it hasn’t done more damage to McMahon. While her favorable/unfavorable ratings are certainly higher than is desirable, she continues to make progress in the race.
Much of McMahon’s progress can be attributed to her constant presence on the air with television ads that have been running for months across the state, including in the expensive New York media market. Not only will she remain on the air for the next seven weeks, but the campaign’s buys are likely to increase. Blumenthal has run ads intermittently, though they’ve been more consistent over the past couple of weeks. The ads generally focus on his accomplishments, particularly when they impact average voters, and work to portray him as a fighter for Connecticut who is not afraid to take on big business. He has yet to take on McMahon, but that will undoubtedly change soon. President Obama is headlining a fundraiser for Blumenthal in the Nutmeg State today, which may signal the start of Blumenthal’s attacks on the Republican.
Democrats believe that McMahon’s saturation media effort and the pile of glossy brochures that have landed in voters’ mailboxes will backfire as she suffers from overexposure. They also argue that the normally staid voters of Connecticut will ultimately decide that they can’t support a candidate with roots in a colorful industry like wrestling. They say that ultimately voters’ concerns about McMahon’s record will trump any concerns they have about President Obama’s agenda. This, too, might be true to a degree. The larger point, though, is that with seven weeks left to go, McMahon has made this a race and Democrats’ best efforts to stall her candidacy have not worked. This, of course, could certainly change as they start airing negative ads against her, but for now McMahon is in the hunt, handing Democrats a race in an expensive blue state that they weren’t expecting.
Again, we are not dismissive of the Democratic poll that shows the race at 15 points, but the Quinnipiac poll, coupled with the Pollster.com trend line and the Republican numbers we’ve seen, suggest a competitive race that is now up for grabs. As such, the race moves to the Toss Up column.

I hope they send that liar home.

Granted WWE is HQ'd out of Stamford, but I think most sensible people realize Bulmenthal is a liar, a hack, and at Linda has a record of jobs and accomplishment.
Maybe BF and Newmom can tell us about this.

Well I know the liberal rag in my area is doing everything in their power to get Blumenthal elected. They're expecting Blumenthal to go after the WWE in ads soon. I'd be surprised if she wins just because CT is tried and true Democrat but it'd be nice. Blumenthal is a lying con artist and anyone who would vote for a guy that has been outed as a liar on multiple points is a fool.

We have the same problem here. Very hard for Republicans to get elected.
What this guy did is outrageous.

McMahon should be elected on the basis that she's completely new to the political scene and seems to have her shit together. Blumenthal has shown himself to be a scumbag many a time. People in CT love him, though.

McMahon Pulls to Within Three of Blumenthal
Real Clear Politics ^ | 09/28/10 | Kyle Adams
In the race for retiring Democratic Senator Chris Dodd's seat in Connecticut, Republican Linda McMahon has cut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's lead to just three points in the latest poll from Quinnipiac University. Blumenthal leads 49-46 in the poll of 1,083 likely Connecticut voters. The Quinnipiac poll comes a day after Rasmussen Reports released a poll showing Blumenthal leading McMahon by five points, 50-45.
McMahon, who has spent upwards of $20 million of her own money on the contest thus far, has steadily climbed back into the race, narrowing Blumenthal's lead to 10 points in early August and again to seven in September. The former wrestling executive has capitalized on the wave of anti-establishment anger and frustration with President Obama that has bolstered insurgent candidates across the country this election cycle. Seventy-six percent of voters say they are either dissatisfied or angry with the government. Of the 33 percent who said they are "angry" with the government, 78 percent back McMahon.

McMahon Pulls Even With Blumenthal, Faces Blistering Attack From National Dems
By Stephen Clark
Published September 30, 2010
FoxNews.com
Connecticut Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon has pushed her race with Democratic rival, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, into a dead heat. (AP)
Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon's sudden surge against the once-invincible Dick Blumenthal in the Connecticut Senate race has put Blumenthal, the Democratic state attorney general, on the ropes and bolstered Republican hopes of taking control of the upper chamber.
A new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday shows Blumenthal leads McMahon by just 3 percentage points, erasing the 41-point lead he held in January. And the reliable Cook Political Report has deemed the race up for grabs.
"She's got him in a headlock," said Scott McLean, a political scientist at Quinnipiac University.
Or to borrow another wrestling metaphor, McMahon thinks she has Blumenthal down on the canvas, ripe for a smackdown. But Blumenthal supporters are hopeful that he'll ultimately deliver the final blow.
"Dick has worked hard and no one believes he's not going to win," said Ellen Camhi, the head of the local Democratic Party in Stamford where WWE is based. "I'd be really surprised and very disappointed in Connecticut if they elect her. It just shouldn't be."
But McMahon has made the race competitive. McLean says McMahon has done a good job of gaining support among independents by attacking Blumenthal's image as a straight talker – an image that has been under assault ever since he was caught earlier this year misrepresenting his military record.
"This is a big problem," he said. "Blumenthal has the advantage with Democrats but independents are giving McMahon another look."
The Blumenthal campaign did not return numerous messages requesting an interview.
The tightening race has apparently sent a jolt through national Democrats who are suddenly pouncing on McMahon at every opportunity.
McMahon came under fire Thursday for suggesting she's open to cutting the minimum wage to help struggling businesses and saying that future increases to both the state and federal rates should be evaluated.
"We've got minimum wages in the state, we've got the minimum wages in the government and I think we ought to look at all of those issues in terms of what mandates are being placed on businesses and can they afford them," McMahon said when asked by a reporter if the current minimum wage rate should be scaled back to help employers.
McMahon later clarified her comments and said she supports keeping the minimum wage in place.
But national Democrats have seized upon McMahon's comments, noting that WWE laid off about 10 percent of its employees in 2009.
"It's not a huge surprise that multi-millionaire ex-CEO Linda McMahon is open to lowering the minimum wage," said Deirde Murphy, national press secretary for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "After years of laying off employees while pocketing millions of dollars in profits, Linda McMahon has proven herself wrong for Connecticut's middle class families time after time."
McMahon's campaign said it's not surprised by the attacks.
"They're paying a lot more attention to the race now," McMahon campaign spokesman Shawn McCoy told FoxNews.com. "We can expect this for the next month or so – Democrats trying to pounce on any little thing she does."
McCoy said the campaign also expects wrestling to dominate the race in the final weeks.
"I think Democrats have been trying to make this race about wrestling for months now," he said. "But the fact is this race is about jobs and the economy."
Democrats say they're not worried about the race and are still confident that Blumenthal will prevail.

I was in stamford CT last weekend and her signs were EVERYWHERE.
Go Linda - take out the left wing trash!

Front page of the CT post today was a story about her having a tax lien or something filed on her back in the 70s. I didn't bother reading it because I couldn't care less about a failed business endeavor in the 70s or some shit. They're not pulling punches anymore as tricky Dick Blumenthal the chronic liar is on the ropes.

It's pretty funny, the entire front page is plastered with wrestling photos and talk of some business deal involving an Evel Knievel stunt going awry. Apparently her having some failed business ventures in the 70s means something? It's not like she's a multi-multi-millionaire now or anything.
The CT Post is the ultimate liberal rag. I'd put it right up there with NY Times in terms of the trash they print. It's funny because people have been taking them to task recently about it in the opinions section.

Exactly. She can't be any worse than a deadfish who has been caught out on countless lies. The only reason this is even a race is because CT leans heavily to the left.

He really did not campaign that well beyond his narrow message, which i believe in, but can see why it never really took off.

SENATE SIREN – BLUMENTHAL STRONG: Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has widened his advantage over Republican wrestling executive Linda McMahon to 15 points, the Democrat’s internal tracking poll shows. The Democratic firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner has Blumenthal holding steady with a majority of the vote and leading McMahon, 53 percent to 38 percent. The pollster notes in a memo that McMahon’s public image remains deeply problematic, and “large numbers of Connecticut voters hold unfavorable views of McMahon.” Her favorability rating in the survey was 32 percent, while 47 percent said they had an unfavorable impression of her. The poll tested 600 likely voters on Oct. 3 and 4. Read the polling memo here.
Confirms latest public polls that Blumenthal is well ahead.

Don't worry, this chronic lying multi-millionaire is a champion of the people. I always get a kick out of the far-leftists attacking McMahon's money when Blumenthal is loaded himself. His 6,000 sq. foot, $2.5 million Greenwich house screams "everyman". ::)
I never expected McMahon to win but at least this race has drawn light on the fact that Blumenthal might be the worst senate candidate in history.

Rasmussen: McMahon Closes Gap on Blumenthal
Sunday, 17 Oct 2010
Democrat Richard Blumenthal now leads Republican Linda McMahon by just five points in Connecticut’s race for the U.S. Senate in a survey conducted two nights after their third and final head-to-head debate.
The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows Blumenthal, Connecticut’s longtime attorney general, picking up 51 percent of the vote. McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, earns the vote from 46 percent. One percent prefer some other candidate, while three percent are undecided.
The latest numbers move the race from Solid Democrat to Leans Democrat in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Senate Balance of Power rankings.
Just over a week ago, Blumenthal opened a 54 percent to 43 percent lead over McMahon the night after their first debate. While the race was closer in several surveys since January, Blumenthal has always held the lead. In 13 surveys this year, the Democrat has drawn 47 percent to 60 percent of the vote. McMahon has picked up 31 percent to 46 percent support during that same period.
This statewide telephone survey of 750 Likely Voters in Connecticut was conducted on Oct. 14, 2010, by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/-4 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

what's mcmahon? tea party genre? more of a centrist? how much is blomunthal up?
FL is pretty mixed up these days. Sink leading rick scott - most poor people are gonna vote dem, and it's a state full o poor people. Many of the small biz owners who would typically veer right at times like these in response to obama's moves - have MOVED to other states to find work.

Only very wealthy repubs who have millions of their own to spend stand a chance since the media bias, govt welfare complex, etc is so strong here.

You're joking, right? Do you know anything about politics in CT, or New England for that matter? Let me help you out. CT is easily one of the five most democratic states in the country. The democrats have a stranglehold on this entire part of the country. If I'm not mistaken, there isn't a single congressmen from New England that's Republican. Not only that, but the MSM has completely buried any talk about Blumenthal's lying.
That guy could skin and boil a baby on live TV and still win the election.
The fact that McMahon has even kept this race close is a testament to how terrible a candidate he is and how strong she is. That and the anti-Democratic fever sweeping this nation.

this is a pretty mild mannered woman, so i hope Linda M. can pull it out.

She won the debate but not according to what's in the papers. The front page of the CT Post said neither side accomplished much in the debate while spending 3/4 of the following coverage on it talking about the negatives of McMahon. Blumenthal's lying was mentioned all of 0 times.

Connecticut: Blumenthal campaign worried their voters are not turning out
Wireupdate ^ | November 2, 2010 | By Joe Brooks
Low supporter turnout for Richard Blumenthal has forced the campaign to send out an alert Tuesday afternoon urging supporters to get out to the polls.
“Voter turnout appears to be heavy in areas that benefit our opponent,” The campaign email read".” It is critical that we maximize our efforts to get our supporters to the polls. We need your help”
Blumenthal is running against Linda McMahon in a highly publicized campaign for US Senate in Connecticut. The Real Clear Politics average of all national pulling has Blumenthal leading McMahon by 9 points, however that lead has been shrinking in recent weeks.
Polls close in Connecticut at 8PM ET.

240 latches on to something he thinks sounds good and repeats it endlessly. McMahon was a great candidate.

I understand they're a lib state - but the fact McMahon was tied with him in polls tells me there's a damn good chance a repub could beat a lying bum like Blum.
She was just a weak candidate. but that's okay - cause now that the tea party movement is accepted, stronger candidates will move into that category for 2012. You won't see an Angle or a ODonnell reach the nomination - people who can actually WIN over a far-left dem in a leftish state will run. Coons should have lost. Reid should have lost. By miles.

By miles.
I think it was impressive enough that she managed to pull even with him. Schiff may or may not have beaten him but his campaign strategy was horrible and he played himself right out of contention.
The media here did a great job silencing any talk about Blumenthal's lies. He's a horrible candidate but the majority of people here vote on party lines regardless of candidates so whatever.
Self made business person with international business epxerience who knows about economics, business, jobs, and what it will take to get the economy in order. Blumenthal is just a lying hack who will rubber stamp obama;s worst excesses.
Most people in the state don't even like Blumenthal but they'll be damned if they vote against the democrats. CT has long been one of their strongholds.
Looks like Himes may be going down, though. L-O-L!
-

BF, I wouldn't be so sure about that, some of the races I voted for republicans
-
how can she pull even - and not win - and still do a good job?
I don't follow. She lost momentum against a guy who lied about one of those things you just can't lie about and recover. MSN spent 3 months trashing Blum - Chris mathews did it on a daily basis!!!
So you're saying she's a good candidate - who squanders a lead against a liar even MSNBC bashes? I don't follow...

It's Connecticut. No one cares about Blumenthal's lies. Believe me. I asked my parents about it and they couldn't have cared less. Same goes for the rest of the sheeple who vote along party lines in this state.
McMahon was never going to win. Or any Repub candidate. The question was how badly would they lose.

Angle is still in her race. While I wish O'Donnell could have pulled it off, I'm glad she made it this far. It's numbskulls like Mike Castle that need to go. I just hope Murkowski gets crushed, just like Crist in Florida.

Too bad the apple fell FAR from the tree.

Come on, man. Blumenthal's fucking terrible. You can lean left or be a democrat and still acknowledge that. The guy is a horrible candidate.

Why was McMahon polling TIED in a far left state?
If she lost by 17 points after training by 17 points (see: ODonnell)... I'd understand.
But she was TIED and managed to blow it. It's hard to blame the state for being lib, when the voters liked her equally.

She needed to go above and beyond to win over voters here and she didn't. They came out even from the one debate they had and that just doesn't cut it.
I don't think Schiff would've done any better.

In states like NY & CT, the dems are almost always a lock regardless, 240 does not live in a state like this so he doesnt get it.

Wasn't the first time I've voted dem. :D
I just thought Blumenthal was an atrocious candidate. I bagged on Schiff but he makes Blumenthal look like an even bigger idiot than he is.

He was plummeting and she was rising steady - until oct 1, 2010.
Rassmussen had her within the margin of error - 3 points - it was a stat tie.
Then, it reversed. He jumped 7 points in 4 weeks. Why?
Not cause it's a lib state. cause she lost momentum. Maybe she ran a weak campaign, I dunno. But she lost it that last month.

I believe their debate was right around the 1st.

Again 240 - she would have won if it were almost any other state than CT
-
Outside of Dodd/Blumenthal, CT dems aren't bad at all. Those two, on the other hand....
-
Again 240 - she would have won if it were almost any other state than CT
If she had WON the debate handily - She'd have won the job. hard to blame a state's tendencies when you need a challenger to 'knock out' the incumbent.
It was just her inability to 'wow' voters that cost her the job. They were conservative enough to put her in a tie and give her a chance to win. Once she got the national spotlight, and it wasn't a staged wrestling match or something she carefully controlled - she was exposed and voters saw thru it.
I'm saying, in 2012, a stronger candidate will emerge from the tea party in all races. Losers like blum and reid and that bearded marxist coons will LOSE... if yall stop letting rich people and extremists win the nominations.

The repubs no one viable outside of Schiff and he beat himself with his poor campaigning. What's sad is that the dems could have run someone worthwhile and instead they went with the same old terrible career politician.

I don't know much about Blumenthal, actually. But McMahon? Thank God its a no-go for her. Blumenthal had a track record and experience that could be judged, his Vietnam lie notwithstanding.

It's because of those "extremists" that the GOP is winning tonight. The fact that conservatives can compete in blue state, and beat RINOs in the process, is a good sign.

You don't know much about anything dumbass.
GOP will pick a few house and senate seats that you can feel good about, but not enough to stop Obama from pushing the agenda freight train going.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
Now, go off yourself.

Mamchin took out a gun to cap & trade and said he wants to repeal obamacare.
The house is a landslide against obama. Sweep in PA, Rand, Rubio, Toomey, etc.
You are delusional - obama is finished,

LOL.... I love this.... repubs celebrating like they won the lottery.
it's like coming home and discovering your wife getting nailed by the football team.
Then, you celebrate because "hahaha, at least they didn't do anal on her!"
Obama has completed more legislation in 18 months than any president in history, in terms of his own agenda. That chick has jizz smeared all over his face, belly and everywhere else. But that booty is left untouched (cap/trade and amnesty), so let's high-five and take her back into your waiting arms...

Give me a break!
Because of that boneheaded legislation, the GOP (once left for dead) has returned with a vengeance and beat the hell out of the Democrats. Plus, as far as ObamaCare is concerned, the Republicans have made it clear that, if they can't repeal it, the next best thing is to defund it. ObamaCare goes NOWHERE without money. And the GOP holds the purse strings, now (or at least, in January).

"Defunding" healthcare reform has its drawbacks, as it would force the GOP to deny individual aspects of HRF that are quite popular. It also would likely cause a gov't shutdown. How'd that work out for Newt and the GOP in '94?

Worked out great - the GOP held congress until 2006 - helped balance the budget, and restor fiscal discipline.
Benny: How do you fgeel today knowing that Obama's agenda is OOOOVVVEERRRR ? ? ?
-
Worked out great - Clinton was president for another SIX YEARS and Newt was soon unemployed.
fixed

Clint pushed welfare reform, DOMA, and fiscal prudence.
obama is pushing a neo-leninist agenda that was soundly defeated last night.

Losers like blum and reid
33., I called reid a loser here. You said you don't recall me trashing him?

I take it back. Fine. I don't remember these as much as the angle bashing.
