Wow, I wish I could un-see that.
If the question should ever be asked "Is Mike Metzer a queer mental patient"?
This video shall be considered Exhibit A
-
agree with the above but other than platz's legs i think he had the ideal bbing physique.

-
True. Amazing physique on that nut job. If he could have shrank the gut and increased the chest he would have been a god.
-
What the fuck did I just see?
He's wandering around the stage, looking like a buffoon, has zero relevance to the song or even what's going on there and he looks out of his mind like a psych ward patient.
And they said BBing went downhill when Yates came on the scene...

Why didn't bodybuilding go mainstream after this clip ??? ::) :-X

While I haven't read the book, I'd be willing to bet that you're an idiot for believing Metzner is NOT an idiot. He's dogmatic, stubborn and thinks his training is the only method that works. One look around any gym in the country one can tell that is not the case. And even better, Metzner didn't even do what he said he did...so he didn't follow his own methods. And every time he came out with a new book, it was a little different, yet still superior to his old methods.

That is a fantastic book, just don't apply his 'logic' to bodybuilding. That basically summarizes the book in its entirety. Mike struggles to find enough scientific analogies to parallel bodybuilding and justify their "theories"-- through 'science'
for those of you with limited vocabulary, get a comprehensive dictionary. Your'e gonna need it.
"Tautology, Inverse Ratios, illogical, formidable, quantum, desparaging, arbitrary, objectivity and subjectivity....
and while your'e at it, pick up "The Wisdom of Mike Mentzer" along with 'the Fountainhead'
Oh yeah, and then apply all of your new knowledge to bodybuilding and wait for the gains...
keep waiting...
a little more....
a little more for Santa Claus....

Mike didn't like volume training because Arnold used it. Simple as that.
-
Mike had quite the gab. You read his stuff and sometimes you're like, I'm only out to do sets and reps with a barbell, man.
-
the problem with mike's philosophy on training is that its too advanced for the avg gym rat.
the avg gym rat can follow the logic- maybe- but rarely can put it into practice- so then calls the logic flawed.
mikes only failing was recognising that his approach had to be tempered to account for external stressors..i.e. life
his logic was spot on in terms of getting the science correct- not an easy thing and one that few have been able to do- literally the great philosophers of our time have been the only ones to do it..and even they get criticised by simple folk.
the additional thing people fail to recognise is that mike had trapezial palsy- or a neurological condition causing loss of a large section of muscle in one side of his trap. this meant that for him, everything was assymetric when he trained..making symmetry virtually impossible.
the biggest effect was that he couldnt then get decent pecs and one arm was larger than the other.
so, his achievements really are amazing considering the problems. he cant help it if people dont have the heart, guts, or ability to use his observations and logical progression as tools to implement in their own success.
-rather than do it- they cry foul and substitute the wrong causes and effect..i.e. their lack of effort to the effect of minimal gains.
-
According to him, his clients (circa 97 til 2001 which was when he passed) would regularly gain 20 to 30 quality pounds over a period of 3 to 4 months.

back in those days mentzer believed in fatburners, not eating anything, and cardio....the novel lipid eraser known as meth mentzer which caused eating 0-500 kcal aday (yes from icecream or cookies, oreo was the muscular choice) tipped of with 2-4 hours running...he got away with having sweets in his prep....meth mentzer shouldīve stayed instead of ephedrine....bb.s shouldīve gone mainstreem if more people than mentzer would direct traffic naked...then people might have thought we carred about the enviroment atleast...atleast drinking your own piss couldīve stayed...it all went downhill when drinking others cum became the norm...bodybuilders nowadays seem insane!

Mentzer was the biggest crybaby in bodybuilding.
-
could be... it's just that, (till now) it's the best bb book i've read...
-
Part of what NotMrAverage posted can be found in Mentzer's Heavy Duty Journal, without da meth and piss drinking of course lol "A bodybuilding workout is not an endurance contest" ;D
-
is it good?
This is the best of Mike's books. He even writes about contest prep, which he avoided in his other books.

Pilfering their hats, sunglasses, lol!! Awkard but funny video for an inpromptu (was band managers idea by the way).

According to him, his clients (circa 97 til 2001 which was when he passed) would regularly gain 20 to 30 quality pounds over a period of 3 to 4 months.
Notice he never showed pics of these clients except one of the Barbarian brothers and that German juicer. Gaining weight in and of itself is meaningless. People all over the world are gaining weight without ever touching a weight -- or their toes for that matter.
And Mentzer, when describing these gains in bodyweight, never ever used the word "quality."
-
So are you saying he's full of shit, and his clients really didn't make such great progress? He did in fact train Anthony Robbins, the motivational speaker. And I remember seeing Robbins on some television infomercial back in 2000, and the dude was NOTICEABLY BIGGER. He claimed that HIT training gave him that size. And if you are looking for visual proof of Mentzer's theroy in action type "The Boise Experiment" into the youtube search engine. There are 2 dudes who videotaped their HIT training experience, and they made some pretty damn good progress. Especially the smaller guy.

None of this black and white thinking. Mentzer would not approve of this logic. Because I believed he exaggerated doesn't mean that I think he's full of shit. I've been a Mentzer fan and following his general principles since 1970, probably before you were even born.
When Mentzer says that a with a properly conducted workout session you should make improvement after each and every workout is just simply wrong. He never did it and nobody else did it. If you made a discernible improvement after every workout you'd be 400 pounds of muscle in 5 years.
Of course every time you failed to make gains he would just say that you did something wrong. You will find that out soon enough when you fail to get your 16 inch arm at 7%. Or have you now drop that down to 15" -- down from the original 17"?
-
Well man, as far as me and my 16 inch arm is concerned, that will be covered in full detail during Phase 2 of my 3 Phase Project, and yeah, I firmly believe that I can have a MUSCULAR 16 inch arm @ sub-7. And as far as Mentzer's claim about one making progress each and every single workout, and him not doing that during his own career is because as he said, he wasn't properly implimenting volume and frequency, as he was doing to much of both, and he didn't reduce either aspect enough. He said that one should be able to maximize their full muscular potential within 1 year or less. I know that fast and immediate results are possible coz I've experienced them myself at various times. I'll be honest here, I'm not the best person to demonstrate Mentzer's theroy coz I'm an OCD kinda dude, and I just can not train so infrequently, it's literally impossible for me. The absolute best I can hope for is every other day training, and in fact I usually end up training 2 or 3 days in a row. But that's my problem.

Sounds like a "Wild horse out of control".
-
I actually had a phone consultation back in 2000 with him, and I just couldn't bring myself to train only once a week, as he suggested. And he did in fact call me a wild horse that needed to be bit and bridled. It would be nice to have some fit and sexyass female bit and bridle me ROFL!

He meant improvements in strength.- ie either in weight or reps- or both. He knew growth usually went in cycles- in fact he said he was one of those people who would gain in strength for months with no discernable gains in size, then boom would find himself several lbs heavier. he almost gave up severeal times in fact because of those periods when he was younger. He said peopel who gained constantly or consistently in weight and size were the exception and most gained in cycles.

Yeah, "most gained in "CYCLES..." was right.

Dude, by your own admission you quite training completely for 8 years. LOL that it's IMPOSSIBLE for you to train less.

Yeah, "most gained in "CYCLES..." was right.
good one :D

You, nor anybody else, will gain in strength after every workout indefinitely. You will hit a plateau very quickly. In a few years, maybe 3-5 depending on many factors. Then it's just a matter of drugs. How much and which ones you take. Just like Mike and Ray did. I knew someone very close to Ray who work as his chiropractor whom I also became close with. And Ray didn't fry his kidneys from Advil.
-
Yeah, "most gained in "CYCLES..." was right.
LMAO! Spot on!

Well I trained for 23 years so no that isn't going to happen. But I didnt strength plateau that fast. As of my last show last year, I was still getting stronger- at age 50.. Maybe thats why I get called an anomoly, lol . But bear in mind that it could even be one rep- that's still an increase. And if you aren't getting better, why be in the gym? Its still progressive resistance training, no matter what system you use right?
-

Gayness for sale! :D
-
Yeah, that's true that I hadn't trained regularly for nearly 8 years, just here and there. But the problem with me is either it's all or nothing. Either I train nearly every goddamn day, or I train once a month lol The whole key here is to TRAIN WITH GREATER AND GREATER TRAINING LOADS. If you can do this your muscles WILL GROW. So now the question becomes: How does one train to enable themselves to train with greater and greater loads? I firmly believe that the last nearly impossible rep plays a HUGE ROLE in enabling one to use greater and greater training loads.
-

Nice to see you are still going strong, pun intended..I am almost 50 as well and I am stronger than I have ever been....what is your regimen?...you train everyday?....how's your recovery?..diet?

Many reasons to train when you are no longer progressing size and strength wise. Not the least being for health and fitness. Did you give up training because you stopped progressing?
-

Discipline is not only doing things you don't particularly want to do it's also NOT doing things that you want to do. I'm sure if you put your strong will in gear you might find the strength and heart to not workout that day. Come on dj, seriously.
Just like everybody has a limit to how much muscle you can put on there is also a limit to how strong you can be. You will find that out soon enough when you're 3 phase "project" does not yield the results you had hoped.
-
Allright man, maybe I have some false pride in regards to the results that I will get during my 3 Phase Project, but what you need to remember it that this is also a learning and "remembering" experience for me. For example, I "remembered" that striping fat fast requires both ultra lo cals AND daily hard aerobic training. And quite honestly I keep hammering in this heavier and heavier training loads=bigger and bigger muscles just to remind myself of this "truth" coz if I don't then I WILL find ways to pussy out and not try to train hard.
-
Nice to see you are still going strong, pun intended..I am almost 50 as well and I am stronger than I have ever been....what is your regimen?...you train everyday?....how's your recovery?..diet?
\Right now I dont have one. Recently relocated and don't have a gym yet. Prior to that I was training 3 x a week for the Masters Nationals and the North Americans, Down shifted when I was in souh Carloina working for Defendis (and starving)... I plan to start up this month when I get a place to train, going twice a week for the first months and then going from there. Recovery NEVER was great, lol even in my teens, thats why I went for HIT was not recovering and growing on anything else.. Diet when I am going seriously is med pro. med carbs, lower in fats, except EFA's.
