My Dad fought valiantly on the shores!

PIP
-
PIP - it's just a pity that she didn't give the SAS the full go-ahead to clear out the spineless murdering IRA scum here in Northern Ireland in the 1980's....
Instead today we have to stomach these cowards in our local Government.
All in the name of progress eh??!!!....
-
Rust in peace, grocer's daughter.
-
RIP Maggie,
The greatest we've ever had. A force of nature and unimaginably more passionate about our country than any of these ass-covering grey suits we've been suffering for 20 years.
-
In the rest of Europe, she was only a grocer´s daughter ...
-
Didn't even know she was still alive ???

Adios to the old lady. She and The Gipper can now reunite in the fiery flames. 8)

Hi benny you pos.
-
Tough Lady. Fought to limit over-reaching union power in her country, fought for good core values, stood up for her principles and though she had her critics, she was a strong leader. RIP.
Ashamed at Hollywood for basically trashing her and focusing on her dementia in her elderly years in the movie "The iron lady" released a couple yrs ago, not surprising from the Hollywood super libs.
-
wonder if they will burry her in a coal mine
-
???
I am not Benny, but since you are stalking him I will quote what he likes to tell you here. :D
"GET A JOB," you fucking loser! ::)
Yeah whatever benny.
-
The Reaper tried to delay that meeting for a while. She sure was scary and had a bigger pair of balls than most. Did as much good as she did bad. Most people with such strong convictions only do bad. So I guess she deserved some kudos.
-
'did as much good as she did bad'

she was all about Rich people, High unemployment and cutting their money. She was against Trade Unions, take my hat off to Arthur Scargill and the Miners who did not take her Conservative shit. If you came from a working class Family you voted Labour.

::) where you living and how old are you? I grew up in a working class area and i remember very well that she was hated.
-
Sarita Montiel also has passed this morning (in Spain)
WOOOSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH
-
The only thing she spent money on was the UK Military i know because i served then. For the working class she did fuck all... oh well if you think buying your council house was great.. ???
-
conker
nye bevan did more for the working class and he was alive in her lifetime.
this sums it up for me
She created today's housing crisis. She created the banking crisis. And she created the benefits crisis. It was her government that started putting people on incapacity benefit rather than register them as unemployed because the Britain she inherited was broadly full employment. She decided when she wrote off our manufacturing industry that she could live with two or three million unemployed, and the benefits bill, the legacy of that, we are struggling with today. In actual fact, every real problem we face today is the legacy of the fact that she was fundamentally wrong.
-
::) where you living and how old are you? I grew up in a working class area and i remember very well that she was hated.
she shut down unviable industry and reigned in militant trade unions, both of which were completely sucking the life out of the country(working classes included). I grew up on a council estate when thatcher was in power, and she wasn't too popular at the time but when you study the facts, she has to be remembered as a great. she did things that were always going to make her unpopular with some, but things that had to be done.

A matter of opinion...

apparently
'the ladies not for burning'
;D
due to popular demand thatchers grave is going to be expanded- the first thing they are looking to do is build a bigger dance floor
-
As a younger American, I had no idea who she was. I guess she did many good things for the blokes across the pond.
-
no she didn't
she is largely despised by the british public
I will be off out on the ale tonight to celebrate her passing.

America and England (and many other European countries) are very similar. Remember it was only a few hundred years ago that my ancestors came over to America. Almost all white Americans have ties to Europe.

I'm surprised she didn't privatize it!

Adios to the old lady. She and The Gipper can now reunite in the fiery flames. 8)
Yes, damn that capitalist. Don't know who's easier to own, you or Benny if you're not one in the same. But most cowards and traitors on here do have multiple accounts.

You mean like Obama? Or do you like him?

My government hasn't done shit for me (U.S.A) besides the armed forces (I salute you) I pay my share for the roads to be fixed, and teachers, cops, and firefighters to be paid. What else do they give me? Seriously, I hate politics, so someone enlighten me.
-
She was against socialist/communist type policies where people are viewed as a group instead of individuals, ie what is best for the group...trying to make everyone as close to equal as possible regardless of work effort and skill. Take from producers to spread it to everyone. No pure system is perfect but socialism makes no sense to me, as someone who strives to work hard and better my life & standing for family. I don't want to have to carry able bodied people that are low achievers, low energy or lazy. We must help our sick, disabled and elderly and need some social programs but to indefinitely support able bodied people just because they are poor or have less is wrong.
-

This is one interpretation and that of my father, a factory worker, hated her.
I see it differently. She was against unprofitable state supported organisations. She was pro-business, pro-profit, pro-entrepreneur. She ushered in a golden age in Britain which bubbled over somewhat. She was anti-scrounger, she was against paying people more for a job that it was worth and she let the pieces fall where they may.
She changed the country and the country advanced in leaps and bounds and in fact overheated. What followed Maggie were a bunch of weaklings who let the country go to seed.
Britain desperately needs another leader like that.
-
No the UK needs rid of that idiot CAMERON >:(

Before Thatcher Came To Power, The UK Was Literally Covered In Gigantic Piles Of Garbage
Adam Taylor|Apr. 8, 2013, 11:19 AM|2,446|6
Margaret Thatcher came to lead the U.K. in 1979 after a series of disputes between the government and Britain's then-powerful trade unions.
The new British Prime Minister set out to wage war on what she saw was the "enemy within" the U.K., and many people supported her in this fight.
To understand why Thatcher had this support, check out these photos of central London from 1979s "Winter of Discontent", which show trash piling up on the streets after U.K.'s dustmen (a.k.a. garbage collectors) went on strike.
It's worth bearing in mind that Leicester Square is pretty much the epicenter of London's glamorous West End — a tourism hot spot where movie premieres are held.
These photos show the incredible effect the unions (and union strikes) had on the average citizen's life, and — amazingly — they occurred under Thatcher's predecessor, Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan, a left-wing leader who relied on the union's support!
Just a few months after these photos were taken, Callaghan lost a confidence vote in the House of Commons and was obliged to call an election. Thatcher was voted in to power in the U.K., and the Conservative Party enjoyed 18 years of government.

These are very visceral images, but they really only scratch the surface of how much tensions between unions and governments affected the average citizen's life in the 1970s.
In another notorious example, the British government imposed a 3-day week in early 1974 for commercial users of electricity after industrial action by miners.

For the life of me I can't understand why people can't at least make an attempt to be successful on their own without thinking they need the government to hold their hands. Thatcher gave you the freedom to help yourselves and to prosper in a free society (damn near more free than it is now) and shit on that, just like here.

You just repeat the same tired cliches in your head, as usual. Thatcher's policies laid waste to entire REGIONS. Upwards of Birmingham most of the good jobs one can get are in the public sector, because they pay the same across the nation.
There's your freedom, free to be a civil servant or free to work for peanuts in the private sector. Or fee to start your own business in an area with 40% unemployment- see how that works out.
-
RIP Iron lady. One of the best

Your friends (assuming they exist) got where they are mostly because of two factors:
1) The environments they were born in
2) Luck
-
You can't reason with hard core liberals or socialist. They are filled with absolute seething hate for anything that falls out of their political views. I very much dislike many liberals because I very much disagree with their politics. However if one of them dies, I sure don't hope they burn in hell or have a party to spit on their grave so to speak.

Oh, so you couldn't possibly think that it's a matter of hard, smart work? really? If thats the mentality it's not a wonder why your country is fucked and ours is heading down that path...willingly might I add.

Because they are losers at life and want shared misery for all.

Ronald REagan had Alzheimer's during Presidency
"Ronald Reagan's sons have locked horns over the former president's political legacy after the younger brother, Ron, said his late father's battle with Alzheimer's began while he was in the White House.
The spat opens up a subject that has long been a talking point – when did the 40th president begin to become mentally impaired by the disease. He was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1994, five years after he left office. Reagan died 10 years later at 93.
His sons have written books on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of their father's birth, that falls on 6 February.
The more contentious of the two is My Father at 100, written by Ron, Reagan's natural son with Nancy.
In it, Ron Reagan describes his growing sense of alarm over his father's mental condition, beginning as early as three years into his first term. He recalls the presidential debate with Walter Mondale on 7 October 1984.
"My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses, fumbling with his notes, uncharacteristically lost for words. He looked tired and bewildered," Ron Reagan writes.
Against that is the word of Michael Reagan, who was adopted by the president and his first wife, Jane Wyman. His book The New Reagan Revolution, is an appeal for a return to his father's political principles of low taxes and small government as a way to making America great again.
He has lashed out at his brother via Twitter. "What a way for Ron to say Happy 100th Birthday Dad," read one tweet.
"Ron, my brother, was an embarrassment to his father when he was alive and today he became an embarrassment to his mother," read another.
The tale of the Reagan brothers is like a miniature depiction of the polarisation that has taken hold in the US in the past few decades. They have come to occupy opposite corners of the political ring.
Ron Reagan showed an independent spirit from a young age, declaring himself at 12 to be an atheist when his father was governor of California. He went on to become a broadcaster of liberal and progressive views on outlets that tended to be left of centre, such as MSNBC and the now defunct Air America radio network.
Michael Reagan is a conservative activist and much more in his father's mould. He works as a political consultant through the Reagan Group he founded and makes regular appearances on rightwing outlets such as Fox News and NewsMax. He has a talkshow on the conservative network Radio America.
Their father's mannerisms while in office – including stumbling over his words, his occasional falling asleep in public, his weak memory – led to much speculation about how early on dementia had set in. The New York Times medical writer Larry Altman even raised the question with Reagan during an interview in 1980 just before he entered the White House. Reagan said he would quit if he developed Alzheimer's while in office"

Agree, don't like the little I know about the poll tax but otherwise, seems her ideals supporting hard work, freedom and individualism were admirable.
Tired of hearing that people who value those ideals and don't want to massively redistribute wealth are 'only for the rich', that is bullshit. No one is perfect and neither party is good for all but it is absurd to think the only difference in people is because of luck and birth. That does matter but far from the only factors in today's society in countries like the US and UK...the most important trait I have learned in life (coming from an absolutely middle class average family to becoming a doctor) is to work harder than others and always try to grow personally and professionally, not to settle for mediocracy...ideas that are not held in high esteem in a socialist mindset. I absolutely believe people that who work hard, create and take advantage of opportunities should be able to do better (and not be taxed half their income). I also believe government has a responsibility to keep the playing field as even as possible without picking winners and loosers.
-
An amazing lady. May she rest in peace.
-
btw govt makes sure your clients have a street to come to your gym.
and by passing laws, it makes sure it doesnt turn into somalia(somalia btw has no govt, isnt that your political dream, no govt intervention at all in anything?)
the govt makes sure thasat the mexican carterl cannot flood the usa, or that any mexican can come in(despite what many exageratingly say).
I never said we didn't need tax, but to think you can create more debt and tax unnecessarily and raise taxes to get out of debt is a ridiculous notion. The UK is a socialist country and failing miserably because of socialism, not because of what Thatcher supposedly did 20 years ago.

I've got no feeling on her passing, but the folks thinking she did more good than bad need to look a little further north than London. She destroyed the solid manufacturing base we had in the UK. We led the world in shipbuilding, using UK sourced steel. We had iron mines all across the north of England supporting entire towns and villages. And she shut them down.
Go to the north-east, go to the Yorkshire pit villages, and see the affect she had on them. Whole towns and villages ruined, because everyone worked at the pit, and now it's gone. There's people over here who haven't been able to get a job since. I'm sure some of you will say they should have retrained, moved home, got a job elsewhere. Not so easy when your whole life was working in the mines, or the steel industry, or shipbuilding. Suddenly there's 5000 of you, all with the same skillset, fighting for jobs that don't exist. So you retrain, and have to compete with 1000 people for a single job position. Or you move your whole family across the world because the only place your skills are worth anything is in the developing world.
What else? Privatisation. Things might not have worked perfectly when they were state-run, but give them away to big corporations and what do you get instead? Monopolies. And the public got screwed again, because they whacked the prices up to protect their investors.
She did kick ass in the Falkland's though, so credit to her for that. And some of her other policies were sound in theory.
Tories in the South might have loved her, but for me, Thatcher's legacy in the north of England is desolation. And the repercussions of it will last for a long time.
-
I was trying to find a really young pic of her so I could say I would hit that when it was 25- but this is the best I could find. >:(

The fact is the "solid manufacturing base" you talk of was industries that were losing money and the rest of UK was subsidising, it's a false economy trying to keep people in non productive jobs just for the sake of them being in employment, it cannot go on indefinitely.
Had those industries been viable they would have at the very least been privatised but no private investor would touch them with a barge pole.
If the unions had not been so out of control, making ridiculous demands and getting their members to down tools at the drop of a hat, every 5 minutes, perhaps those industries may have had more chance of being productive.

Looks baked as a potato.
lol...nah i like potatoes...

Bottom line is if your of low IQ lazy, and feel entitled to something for nothing in your pleb life you didnt like her.
If you on the other hand are the hardworking type whos willing to have a go in life and dont feel the world owes you anything Maggies Britain was for you.
Sadly the world is now overrun with populists speech makers like Obama who print money to feed people who feel a sense of entitlment just for being born, this type of politics and policy is drowing our western economies in lowly educated scum. Hopefully when the muslims are the majority in Europe they will revoke this welfare state and turn it around but I doubt it, but one things for sure, the day of reckoning for every western nation is coming in the next 30 years as welfare and healthcare for unemployed non tax contributing people destroys and bankrupts our nations, look to Asia non welfare capitalist sytems is where you want to be not paying taxes for pleb filth that just breeds for cheques in the west, proping up scum like Obama and his failed economic plans.

the country would not be the state it is now if she had remained in power

ok a few points about the poisionous old slag
1. She supported the retention of capital punishment
2. She destroyed the country's manufacturing industry
3. She voted against the relaxation of divorce laws
4. She abolished free milk for schoolchildren ("Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher")
5. She supported more freedom for business (and look how that turned out)
6. She gained support from the National Front in the 1979 election by pandering to the fears of immigration
7. She gerrymandered local authorities by forcing through council house sales, at the same time preventing councils from spending the money they got for selling houses on building new houses (spending on social housing dropped by 67% in her premiership)
8. She was responsible for 3.6 million unemployed - the highest figure and the highest proportion of the workforce in history and three times the previous government. Massaging of the figures means that the figure was closer to 5 million
9. She ignored intelligence about Argentinian preparations for the invasion of the Falkland Islands and scrapped the only Royal Navy presence in the islands
10. The poll tax
11. She presided over the closure of 150 coal mines; we are now crippled by the cost of energy, having to import expensive coal from abroad
12. She compared her "fight" against the miners to the Falklands War
13. She privatised state monopolies and created the corporate greed culture that we've been railing against for the last 5 years
14. She introduced the gradual privatisation of the NHS
15. She introduced financial deregulation in a way that turned city institutions into avaricious money pits
16. She pioneered the unfailing adoration and unquestioning support of the USA
17. She allowed the US to place nuclear missiles on UK soil, under US control
18. Section 28
19. She opposed anti-apartheid sanctions against South Africa and described Nelson Mandela as "that grubby little terrorist"
20. She support the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and sent the SAS to train their soldiers
21. She allowed the US to bomb Libya in 1986, against the wishes of more than 2/3 of the population
22. She opposed the reunification of Germany
23. She invented Quangos
24. She increased VAT from 8% to 17.5%
25. She had the lowest approval rating of any post-war Prime Minister
26. Her post-PM job? Consultant to Philip Morris tobacco at $250,000 a year, plus $50,000 per speech
27. The Al Yamamah contract
28. She opposed the indictment of Chile's General Pinochet
29. Social unrest under her leadership was higher than at any time since the General Strike
30. She presided over interest rates increasing to 15%
31. BSE
32. She presided over 2 million manufacturing job losses in the 79-81 recession
33. She opposed the inclusion of Eire in the Northern Ireland peace process
34. She supported sanctions-busting arms deals with South Africa
35. Cecil Parkinson, Alan Clark, David Mellor, Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Aitkin
36. Crime rates doubled under Thatcher
37. Black Wednesday – Britain withdraws from the ERM and the pound is devalued. Cost to Britain - £3.5 billion; profit for George Soros - £1 billion - although after her remit the policies in place allowed soros to benefit
38. Poverty doubled while she opposed a minimum wage
39. She privatised public services, claiming at the time it would increase public ownership. Most are now owned either by foreign governments (EDF) or major investment houses. The profits don’t now accrue to the taxpayer, but to foreign or institutional shareholders.
40. She cut 75% of funding to museums, galleries and other sources of education
41. In the Thatcher years the top 10% of earners received almost 50% of the tax remissions
42. 21.9% inflation

43: final nail: poll tax fiasco

No wonder Europe is in such a mess. Look at these fools trashing her. njoy being taken over muslims and perpetual economic misery fools.

instead we are taken over by poles
a policy thatcher kicked off
cheers maggie
she was happy to sell weapons to saddam. and to support pincohet. horrific slag of a bitch.

43: final nail: poll tax fiasco
The Poll Tax was fair....more people in a house generally use more local services, why shouldnt they pay more?
The system as stands now is that a single individual in one house pays more than the family next door because his house is worth more....there has got to be a better way of working out local tax.
-
No wonder Europe is in such a mess. Look at these fools trashing her. njoy being taken over muslims and perpetual economic misery fools.
you're the fucking fool
-
2. She destroyed the country's manufacturing industry
No, this is a myth.
Manufacturing under Thatcher went from 25.8% of the economy to 22.5% when she left power.
Under Labour manufacturing accounted for just over 20% of the economy in 1997 when Blair came to power and was reduced to 12.4% under Blair/Brown.

Labour trashed manufacturing not Thatcher.

US and UK...the most important trait I have learned in life (coming from an absolutely middle class average family to becoming a doctor) is to work harder than others and always try to grow personally and professionally, not to settle for mediocracy...ideas that are not held in high esteem in a socialist mindset. I absolutely believe people that who work hard, create and take advantage of opportunities should be able to do better (and not be taxed half their income). I also believe government has a responsibility to keep the playing field as even as possible without picking winners and loosers.

This is true. Hard work makes luck. I was not privileged as a child, neither was my wife, but through hard work, made a great life. It's all about choices. Make the right ones, and most of the time you end up good.

Interesting to see all the conservatives affect a knowledge of Britain to shoehorn their ideology into a Thatcher thread. ::) ;D
has nothing to do with ideology. Anyone capable of taking an objective view of the UK in the 70s will testify the country was in chaos due to militant trade unions, "the sick man of europe".
the unions were holding the country to ransom with mob rule, ever increasing ridiculous demands, threats and industrial action, sucking the life out of the taxpayer daily. 3 day weeks, rubbish piled high in the streets.
yes the good old days!
if only maggie hadn't came along and ruined everything, no doubt we would all be living in Scargill's perfect communist utopia now ::)

dumb welfare recieving plebs every last one of them.
yeah and your a fucking cock

I make about £40k a year at age 28, not exactly what you would call a "pleb"
And I still think that Thatcher as a whole was a disaster for this country.

do you accept that the trade unions were bank rupting the country
they were walking out of work over every little thing
they took us from manufacturing giant to the sick note of the world
someone had to stand up to them

I agree, someone had to reform them. What Thatcher did was destroy them and their industries, hoping markets would fill the void.
Go to Merseyside, see the outcome of that... almost thirty years later.
-
she had only one plan and that was to stop us getting stronger. Privatize everything, get her own way for the Bosses. Twist it anyway you want she fucked over the working man.
-
you guys are just getting my blood pressure up here.. ;D
-
I agree, someone had to reform them. What Thatcher did was destroy them and their industries,
They wouldnt/couldnt be reformed.
They were out of control....for fucks sake at one NUM meeting they voted for a 40% pay rise.
I can imagine the look on my employer's face if i went and asked for a 40% raise this week!....the unions had lost touch with reality, not helped by those at the helm.
The union leaders stopped working for their members and instead saw it as an ideological fight.....what chance did the British car industry have when the union leader was a committed communist (Derek Robinson by the way, who after his union tenure at British Leyland went on to become the national chair for the Communist Party of Great Britain)....
"between 1978 and 1979 Mr Robinson was credited with causing 523 walk-outs at Longbridge, costing an estimated £200m in lost production".
Source:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4294709.stm
200 million was a vast sum of money in the 70s....did these pillocks in charge of the unions just think the industry could shrug that loss off and carry on?!....523 walk-outs in two years, they were on strike more than they were at work!....how do you reason with cretins like that?
Maggie stomped them into the ground, good riddance.
-

you are an intelligent guy raymondo
but the unions were holding a knife to the throat of the economy and they were always spoiling for a fight
they would have refused to be reformed
the only way to address it was to take them on which she did
i disagree with alot of what she did but if she hadnt taken the unions on we would be romania now

Yeah Good riddance to Maggie..

See, that's where I disagree I think in a democracy you don't have such type of impasses, there are always choices.
Maggie had made the choice to have MI5 spy on the Scargill, I doubt she considered reforming the unions for one second. In her brave new world based on Milton Friedman's economic doctrines, unions had no place.

she set out to destroy my city
guess what maggie

we won

A compromise isn't always happy, is it? What Thatcher did was very far from compromising, she didn't become the 'Iron Lady' by compromising... in the end her Cabinet stabbed her in the back because she couldn't compromise...
To use your analogy in the previous post - there are parts of the county today that look like Romania because of Thatcher, not despite of her. Child poverty was in low levels before she came into power, by 1990 it was 28%... child poverty- little kids with nothing mate.

all good arguments
but what is the alternative
scargill was an out and out communist that wanted to bring the establishment down
you have to go back to post war britain where the seeds were sown for what was to follow
by the time thatcher came in we had two polar opposites fighting for the soul of the country
where do you think we would be now if she lost?

If she had lost in 79 her party would have thrown her to the dogs... they didn't like having a woman tell them what to do- not until she proved she was totally ruthless.
A more moderate Tory would have come to power after a few years... perhaps someone like Heseltine.
If she had lost, we would probably be more like northern Europe today. Very high taxes, very low income inequality, excellent public services, reasonable house prices, etc. More socio-democratic as opposed to dog-eat-dog "the market will take care of it" capitalist which is what we are now.

part of the reason we moved from a manufacturing based economy to financial services was down to the unions fucking up the industry
we probably agree that a shift back to a more manufacturing based economy would put us in a much stronger position maybe similiar to Germany
i agree that the way she shifted the economy towards a system that encouraged a selfish money grabbing approach hasnt helped but i believe she was niave in that she though the rich would have the morality to stimulate the economy by reinvesting their wealth rather than hiding it from the tax man
she ultimately tried to make an aspirational britain based on the American anyone can be president model
but british people have a much diferent mentality some might argue we are architects of our own downfall
-
;D
-
my membership pass for the European Left Party in Germany

Good conversation!
Taking a step back (and as an American) could many of the problems that Britain faced and Britain's decline in the 60's-70's be placed at the feet of PM Clemente Attlee? Wasn't it he and his government that nationalized whole industries/utilities, began what was to be the NHS, enlargement of social services, large govt. role in the economy etc etc etc? The auto industry and British-Leyland is shinning example of that. That was pretty extreme and it would seem that Thatcher was the pendulum swinging the other way.
Just my opinion.
-
well i am not a Communist by any means but am Left orientated. I was also elected here and was in politics active.
-
so you are implying that free health care, education and nationally owned industry are bad things to be discouraged?
seriously.
for what it is worth I earn in the highest bracket in the UK. I am happy to pay taxes at a higher rate- I neither want nor expect tax breaks. However the tories just now have given me a tax break. why?
its nonsense.
I would happily be heavily taxed if it meant getting education back to being free or subsidised and or the NHS back to where it belongs.
also pull us out of petro-wars, regulate the bankers and their 'bonus system' for fucking up. you should just a country by how they help or treat those who are least able to help themselves- eg the elderly and the poor. we used to be good at it. since thatcher and her doctrine we have gone downhill.
the tories look after the rich and the idiots who think they can break into the old school tie network- you can't its a closed shop but the carrott they offer will bring the naive into line.
the wealthy protect the wealthy- and rely on working the poor over. not for me.

Why do you say its "free"? You're getting taxed to death for inadequate care.

Fuck that.
A mate had a Danish girlfriend for a while, we went over to visit and were stunned at how expensive a beer was in the bars we visited, her and her friends all drink before going out because its prohibitively expensive to spend an evening just sat in a bar with friends drinking....likewise the motorcycle i ride was about twice as expensive over there, coupled with high taxes i'd likely not be able to afford my current lifestyle over there....i would have a tiny disposable income and for what?....some wishy washy notion of greater equality, a government that tells me what i need and charges me accordingly instead of allowing me the choice to provide for myself.
Socialist policies baby a population, they infer that individuals are stupid and that the government knows best in the most condescending of ways.
No thanks, i'll take the Thatcher model any day of the week.

How did nationalized British-Leyland work out? The place the economy was in during 60-70's was, in part, a result of those policies of nationalization. Whole industries became noncompetitive. The unions overplayed their hands, as well. And actually, today the auto industry in the U.K. is producing more cars than at anytime in its history.
You are actually taking Attlee's tact, full employment via govt. controlled industries and massive social spending. It worked, for short time and then it didn't. In a vacuum without a recovering Europe and Japan it may have worked, but there wasn't a vacuum and Britain had become sick and simply couldn't compete. The pendulum swings one way and then the other. I don't hail Thatcher as a saint or devil like some, there was a pendulum swing in the other direction, but even then she didn't really have a huge majority in Parliament that only happened until after the Falklands in 1982.
And nothing is ever, ever free.

so from now on in getbig i am known as Citizen Smith.... ;D you Brits remember this...

ITS GREAT TO BE told how thatcher was great by US citizens who didn't live in the cities affected by her shithouse policies.
anyone who lived through the thatcher years and wasn't one of the chosen few had it tough. her chosen few however had it easy.
she was all for working hard to get ahead- except for her son who was handed contract after contract because of mummy
hard work and the ethic of it applied to other people not to her and her cohorts. they rinsed the system. good riddance to her and her like.
she even had 3 rounds of breast augmentation paid for by the taxpayer

You're right in that as an American you have a patchy notion of British history :)
Thatcher's acolytes would have you believe that the problems of the 1970s were all down to bitter men standing on platforms asking for a show of hands to down tools.
Yes, indeed.
It wasn't the loss of the imperial markets.
Nor was it lazy management.
Nor did it have anything to do with the education system.
It was all down to those damn unionists.

Well, as it happens I've been to Denmark as well, and I've only seen what you describe in certain parts of Copenhagen... it's one of the most expensive places in the world, anyway.
I don't mind higher prices on alcohol, do you prefer the "Thatcher" model here as well, where some market towns are like battlegrounds on Saturday nights... because yobs can buy a bottle of cider for 99p?
Fuck that noise.

part of the reason we moved from a manufacturing based economy to financial services was down to the unions fucking up the industry
we probably agree that a shift back to a more manufacturing based economy would put us in a much stronger position maybe similiar to Germany
i agree that the way she shifted the economy towards a system that encouraged a selfish money grabbing approach hasnt helped but i believe she was niave in that she though the rich would have the morality to stimulate the economy by reinvesting their wealth rather than hiding it from the tax man
she ultimately tried to make an aspirational britain based on the American anyone can be president model
but british people have a much diferent mentality some might argue we are architects of our own downfall
bigmc, a man of hidden depths ;)

bigmc, a man of hidden depths ;)
A stud and a gentleman like yourself Raymondo.
-
You're right in that as an American you have a patchy notion of British history :)
Understand your point and to be clear I'm not a Thatcher acolyte or anything. I'm just attempting tp bring some more planks into the conversation. It's not as simple as blaming it on unions just as it's not as simple to label Thatcher as a blood drinking capitalist.
And again, this is coming from an American. All I have is what I read and what I've studied. I didn't live it, that is certain.

big round of applause to raymondo and donny from me!

The last week of 'welfare bashing' has really pissed me off no end. The real leeches in this society are scumbag politicians. As a member of society and as a tax payer, why am I funding the lifestyles of Iain Duncan Smith claiming £39 on a breakfast, while hardworking Brits are having to queue in a food bank for an hour in the freezing cold to collect a can of chopped tomatoes some tuna and pasta. Why does 22% of my salary go towards these gross excesses, when some taxpayers can't afford to feed themselves.
How about Sir Peter Vigger’s £1,165 ‘floating pond feature’ for his duck pond? Or for £41,000 of furniture for the Care Services Minister, Phil Hope’s small London flat?
Why, as a taxpayer and as a member of society, am I paying for second and third homes, for soundproofing of bedrooms of MPs daughters, for Laura Ashley curtains for other people, which I get pissed off enough aboiut buying for my own wife! At least she gives me a blowjob for it!
Fucking scumbags.

People haven't figured it yet. Politicians are the new clergy. They have careers to run. That career depends solely on the fact that they are able to trick people into believing that they have both the power and the will to get things done. They have neither.

Exactly. All they are interested in is the next election and what perks are involved if they win.

The communists hated her because she called out their failed polices and bs boldly.
Usually you know someone is on the right track when scumbags and dirty ghetto pos like Benny/Enigma/Hawk attack her.
THIS^^
-
She was against socialist/communist type policies where people are viewed as a group instead of individuals, ie what is best for the group...trying to make everyone as close to equal as possible regardless of work effort and skill.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Communism has to be stamped out wherever it raises its head.
-
You can't reason with hard core liberals or socialist. They are filled with absolute seething hate for anything that falls out of their political views. I very much dislike many liberals because I very much disagree with their politics. However if one of them dies, I sure don't hope they burn in hell or have a party to spit on their grave so to speak.
They're fucking lunatics

It doesn't make sense. Why would anyone WANT to be controlled?

-

Didn't watch the video's, but yea she was divisive because she didn't take any shit. If you pushed her she pushed back harder. That is how she earned the name "iron lady." As for Apartheid, technically it is wrong. However you can't argue that South Africa was a hell of a lot better off in just about ever aspect under it. Even many blacks living over there will admit that.

She was an utter bag of shit who forced millions of familys into povety by her closing of the mines which was only for her own selfish reasons. Mining and building have always been a staple of the north for employment and the old c unt fucked both of them up.
To say the people who hate her are lazy benifits scroungers is plain wrong. She is hated (at least where i live) for taking away work for thousands.
Its you pansy never worked a real days work in your life fuckers who think she is great.

Hi Benny.
-
so you are implying that free health care, education and nationally owned industry are bad things to be discouraged?
seriously.
for what it is worth I earn in the highest bracket in the UK. I am happy to pay taxes at a higher rate- I neither want nor expect tax breaks. However the tories just now have given me a tax break. why?
its nonsense.
I would happily be heavily taxed if it meant getting education back to being free or subsidised and or the NHS back to where it belongs.
also pull us out of petro-wars, regulate the bankers and their 'bonus system' for fucking up. you should just a country by how they help or treat those who are least able to help themselves- eg the elderly and the poor. we used to be good at it. since thatcher and her doctrine we have gone downhill.
the tories look after the rich and the idiots who think they can break into the old school tie network- you can't its a closed shop but the carrott they offer will bring the naive into line.
the wealthy protect the wealthy- and rely on working the poor over. not for me.
Agreed 100%.

I'm not familiar with the mining situation, was it something like our stupid Auto Bailout?
Why we didn't let incompetent companies fail, to be replaced by competent companies like Honda and Toyota that would almost instantly fill that void is beyond me. ::)

Exactly. Entitlements/bailouts/no bid contracts/unions/monopolies all keep innovation down. Competition increases resource outputs while minimizing resource inputs and results in lower prices for the consumer. This benefits all...especially the poor.

Thank you!
No one wants to see people lose their jobs, but we just increase the problem 10x when we try and prop up failing enterprise.
It doesn't sound (could be wrong) like Thatcher killed mining/manufacturing, only that she was smart enough not to mettle in something that couldn't be fixed.
-
Has the topic of WYHI been breached yet?
-
if competition is good
why did thatcher monopolise and cartel rig the national industry bids
the only competition she wanted was one that her people would win
as for the miners unless you understand the politics behind it and the way she crushed communities putting generations on the scrapheap then you really shouldn't comment.
to give you a comparative
take all the media/tech/corporate/ entertainment companies out of california in one fell swoop and replace them with nothing at all. for years. what would the US citizens do? they would take to the streets right. that is what the mining communities did.
what would the US people do?
accept it?
or fight back and defend their communities and industry?
-
and then in response
bus in loads of residents from outside the area
and pay them more than you were paying the original communities.
but tell them that you can't pay them that money as their jobs are no longer there.
again.
what would you do?

believe it or not, but uk has the best healthcare system in the world imo
ofc it depends on how one values life and philosophy and lives of others.
Evil Republicans like "The Coach" that are against socialized medicine give more to charity than you, I can almost guarantee it.
We'll help others because it's the right thing to do, not because it's the law.
Enjoy your healthcare, funded by, and against the will of those who are more productive than yourself.

How do you prove and/or quantify this? Just by your own arrogance?
I'm being a jerk here obviously. Keep up the good work galeniko! Although I strongly disagree with your politics, I'm glad you're happy with the healthcare system in your country.

The Coach isn't evil. From what I can gather, he is just really, really stupid and out of his element when talking about anything other than athletic/bodybuilding training.

From another forum...
The curious ghoulishness of Thatcher-death celebrations
"What exactly were they celebrating? Thatcher hadn’t been in power in over 22 years. An entire generation has gone by since Thatcher left office, and the Tories have held power only briefly since. If these people are so miserable and put her in the center of that misery, perhaps they should ask why their lot in life hasn’t improved since she left office.
Normally, this kind of celebration takes place when brutal dictators die while still clinging to power, not when elected leaders pass away 22 years after they honored the will of the electorate. That’s a key point, too — Thatcher didn’t seize power and rig elections to keep it, like the mullahs of Iran or (arguably) Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. The voters of the UK made her Prime Minister, and kept her in place as she rolled out the policies that returned the British to economic, military, and diplomatic strength. If these ghouls want to protest, they should probably protest their own people instead of a long-retired popular leader whose place in history won’t be threatened at all by people who struggle to spell correctly (see pic at the article):
http://hotair.com/archives/2013/04/09/the-curious-ghoulishness-of-thatcher-death-celebrations/
Why has their lot NOT improved since she left office? Good question. Blaming someone else for your own failure is so much easier.

settle down Doris, calling me cock, please having a bit of fun with a celtic cousin, im the grandson of a miner, son of a thatcher refugee, and have family who have all served including in the falklands. Trouble with me friend is my father worked hard and gave me an oppurtunity to be better educated, with this education I formed my own point of view, Maggie was alright, trade unions do more damage than good in my experiance, free market dictates the price of a commodity unions dont take that into account when they push up wages.Companies need to make a profit. Just a bit of banter which i would have no problem backing up, but lets leave the rambo part out of it, its the internet, brood all night, no different time zone friend, were just having a laugh talking bollocks on a bodybuilding forum. I wouldnt fly a union jack if you paid me, I dont like the english, my flag like yours a different color, you dont have to be english to like Maggie, just share a similar point of view.

yeah im just a bitter 300 pound ripped internet millionaire, shame on me for not being happy how governments spend my taxes, I believe in both welfare and health care but to a population that acts accountable, not one that lets welfare families breed like rodents, and to a population that gives itself heart disease and obesity through bad habits. If your happy having your taxes treat a few when they could treat many, having your healthcare restrict cancer saving drugs as the budget doesnt stretch due to a health system over run with smokers, power to you bro,

A quick point for those claiming Thatcher destroyed communities/areas etc by shutting down the mines.
The domestic demand for coal was falling year on year, export demand fell off a cliff because other countries were producing coal cheaper down to lower labour costs and not having to contend with tyrannic unions.
What was the option... keep the mines open producing a product that was needed less and less and that had to be sold at a loss.
It was a dangerous and unhealthy industry anyway, who would honestly want their kids to be coal miners today?
-
any pics of her corps yet?

Don't be making snide remarks son. I dont question your salary, just your tax arrangements.
I make significantly more than £150k a year. I have my own Eex hazardous area valve business operating in north sea oil and gas industry.
I take around £30k a year thur PAYE to keep me at the 20% rate and take maybe another £200k or so as a dividend which save me NI and higher tax. I pay 20% on this dividend. I pay me wife another £30k to use us her allowances and she gets £50k dividend too.
Then again, I contribute £500k in vat and employers NI for my employees so I pay my way.
My point is not that you make £150k per year but that you pay top tax thru PAYE. This must make you an SME main board director without being a significant shareholder. Most people earning that sort of money are shareholders or partners in firms and would never have their payrole department allow them to be hit with 45% tax. They would always divert some to dividends/partners profitshare. This also saves the business employer NI.
-
first off not your son
second off
the old dividend thing is fine if you just want to top your money up
but if you want to increase the value fo the business you don't do that as it degrades the asset value of the business
instead you take a livable salary but don't rinse the dividend as it devaiues the biz.
like you my missus get 36k etc etc etc
but the days of rinsing a dividend are sound for SME's but you never add value to the business and thats where the future is for me
years back everything went through the IOM but again it devalues business. the value for me and my family if i die is in the profit and saleable val of the business
but you knew that. surely?
as for SME we make a decent amount p.a. post tax. high 6's once I have taken my bit out but the money is in the long term sale.

as for minority shareholder
32% shareholder in a company that last year cleared just shy of a mill (net [profit) with 1.3m 'cash at bank at y/e' a business that operates purely as a consultancy so has minimal overheads. T/O is 3.9mill and we mark up on externals
no debt
and we own our office building
when we ran it as a cash cow we raped it on divi's- now we run it a different way

Whether you take your cash as a salary (current year cost thru P+L) or as a dividend from retained profit makes zero dufference to net asset position of the business in the balance sheet. The difference is that if you take £150k thru PAYE you will have less net cash than if you take £30k thru PAYE and £120k as dividend.
Whatever you take by whatever means, net asset position is reduced by your takings.
Anyway, sounds like you have a good business. We supply stuff for oil and gas whereby the suppliers stock and supply direct ( we have sole distribution rights for Scotland for many products). We then make money on installation and electrical and hydraulic control system design and installation.
The value of the business is not on net assets but on PE ratio which equates to it being worth £8 - £10 million right now. Plenty of IP and goodwill.
Make around a million retained profit after tax past 6 years. Next year could be zero of course but I don't think so.
Yes it was possible to come out the RAF 20 years ago and make something positive in post Maggie Thatcher's Britain.

This also saves the business employer NI.
whats you company called big al
i deal with some specialist companies in that industry

His "Bedroom Tax" i mean what a joke... he has two luxury houses.. like i said these Conservative assholes look after their own, old school tie network and he´ll land an easy job later on.
so what would you suggest instead of the bedroom tax? or do you think the previous system that allowed people living in taxpayer subsidised housing to have spare rooms was ok , when there are thousands of other families in social housing living in cramped conditions.
if private sector renters want the luxury of a spare bedroom they have to pay for it, why should the taxpayer pay for people in state subsidised housing to have spare rooms?
-
Because if the way social housing is allocated the main people the bedroom tax will hit are couples who have lived in the same house for years and have raised a family who have grown up and left and now they have to either give up the family home or be worse off financially which is just plain wrong in these cases when on the other hand they are cutting tax for the highest earners.

you know i write on Facebooks with ex Army Friends and Assosiations. I read every week of old comrades now being forced out of their homes although some served 22 years service to Queen and Country. One Distressed woman wrote that she will now be forced out her house because her Husband who was a long serving soldier died and because her son is now a serving soldier ..will now have to be cut because her son is no longer there. He comes back on leave too see his mother and has no place to live. Cameron is a Coward who does not understand , trust and comradship.

Its subsidised housing, why should the taxpayer subsidise people living in houses with more bedrooms than they need? If their kids have grown up and moved out why don't they exchange down to a smaller property? there are plenty of families in social housing that don't have enough bedrooms...
If you want the luxury of extra bedrooms go buy your own house or rent privately and pay full market rates, anyway the amount being charged for extra rooms is still only a fraction of what you'd pay for a room in the private sector.

That is disracefull the poor woman after her husband and son have gave so much for this mess of a country to then be forced out of the family home? Its disgusting.
What would posh boy cameron know about working class people. He grew up in a county mansion with tennis courts and swimming pool and has never wanted for anything his whole life ::)
Id love to repeatedly punch his face

so they should be housed where? give me an example of this ..
there is an exchange system in social housing where people can swap properties, and there are plenty of families living in over crowded conditions.

the link was about housing in Scotland and the link was there. you talk a lot about housing tell us where you will send these people.. in a slum area all boxed together?

you are talking shit because there are social regulations and i know disabled people are being cut and thrown out their houses. The Exchange system is only on paper to cut people and strangle the poor.

their pensions are being cut

I know there is an exchange system , i grew up in council housing and i know plenty of people who have swapped property via the exchange system...
what are you talking about disabled people are being cut and thrown out of their houses?
do you mean you watched the news and they showed a couple of exceptional cases where disabled couples were going to be affected...i think i saw another case where they showed a women whose kid had died and she was keeping a spare room as a shrine for him...those stories do pull on the heart strings...
funny that i never saw anything in the media highlighting any typical cases, like where couples are just continuing to live in state subsidised 3 bed houses after their kids have moved out.
-
Yep, just doesn't give a fuck.

he is a typical Conservative dick. I really write on assosiations for British Army Vertrens and i can tell you most are disgusted at what Cameron is doing. The man is a Disgrace. Thatcher is remembered by some Vets as a strong supporter of the Military.. which is true but to the working class terrible.

It costs us taxpayer the same regardless of who lives there So it makes no difference to us.
I personally wouldnt like to se an elderly couple forced outof the family home to make way for some family with 8 kids who havent worked a day in their live and spend their giro on dope and cider. Who would you rather have living next door?
If anything its those on benefits with many kids who can afford to private rent a bigger house. The more kids they have the more money they get. I know a whore with 4 kids never worked a day in her life rents a brand new 3 storey townhouse.

Did the Link work now? show us your proof? i can show you in real life the devistating effects of Conservatism.

I have no allegiance to any political party, just seems like common sense that people living in state subsidised housing shouldn't have the luxury of spare bedrooms when there are other families crammed into houses with not enough room.
Seems to me you're a typical brain dead moron, who cannot explain themselves coherently and really has no clue about the facts of the subjects you try to talk about.

How do you know the family with 8 kids haven't worked a day in their life? how do you know the elderly couple haven't been a drain on the system all their lives?
it's all assumptions and generalisations...
the bottom line is if the state are funding your housing you really are not entitled the luxury of spare bedrooms imo.

I have no allegiance to Cameron, i have no idea of the % who have benefited since he came to office. But can you show me the % of people that have lost ...where are your FACTS?
I look at things on a case by case basis and the bedroom tax seems to be at least a step in the direction. Even people on housing benefits in the private sector cannot get a spare room payed for, why should it be different for people in social housing?
-
and lets talk about the working class becoming a chance to study? no Cameron cuts that too. They don´t get a chance to study in a University like Camerons rich class.

I know of hundreds of local familys who know fine well they are better off not working and having a flock of kids and letting the taxpayer pay. I was stupid enough to buy an ex council house between a council house and an asian owned private rental property and not one tennant of either property has had a job. All have had several kids and say they are better off not working and i dont see why an old couple or a lady like donny mentioned in an earlier post should move out of a home they raised a family in and have been there for years to make way for shitbags like these.

What are you talking about? anyone with the grades can go to university in this country. If you don't have the money , you get grants along with loans to cover your expenses , and the loans are only payed back when you start earning over a certain threshold and are at a very favourable rate and over a very long period time.
you really need to educate yourself with some facts and stop listening to bs propaganda
-

i for one have lost out since the wanker got into office. The vat increase costs me 40 to 50 quid a week in the busier months and scrapping the small buisness rates for coincil tax persueded me and my mate to give up our workshop.
-
ok
-
so in short
pensioners who live off the state and have more bedrooms than they need will lose money
I wonder how much Liz windsor and co are going to lose then?

the problem is when you end up with the debt problems the uk ended up with at the end of labour's reign, the books need to be balanced and it's inevitable that taxes are going to have to go up somewhere and there are going to be losers. you could argue if labour had managed the economy better, there would have been no need for tax increases, as the tories are not exactly known for wanting to raise taxes.

watch the video
don't really know anything about the EMA so can't comment. one thing i will say about university fees, i think it is right for students to chip in when cuts and tax increases are needed across the board, but one thing that i think was out of order was that initially it was announced that £9000 a year would be the top rate but that would supposedly only be in exceptional cases.
Then when the universities released their fees nearly every one was £9000, but then that hits the middle classes just as bad as the working classes(probably worse) as the grants are means tested so if your parents have money, they have to pay the fees up front, whereas if your parents can't afford it you get the fees offset until you are earning.

no watch the video again. it´s not just about UNI but College students too and their help to educate themselves not with "luxuries" but basics. the little help they got was cut from Cameron. So if these young people do not get a chance to educate themselves and intelligence is nothing to do with wealth.. then tell me how a working class kid will get there.

How is lowering tax for the highest earners going to help this problem.
How is it fair that a high earning paye employee on say £150000 a year is £7500 a year better off where someone like me who doesent earn a great deal but spends a lot on materials is £2000 a year worse off from the vat increase alone.
Typical conservative government looking after the rich and fucking over the working class.

not sure where you get those figs from, as the highest rate of tax has risen from 40% - 50% , put up at the end of the labour term and not changed by the tories. although there is pretty good evidence that 50% tax is probably higher than optimal for the good of everyone in the long run.
the myth that the tories look after the rich and screw the poor is just propaganda, the last labour government actually lowered taxes and courted the rich far more than any government in recent UK history(current one included). And to be fair labour did a pretty good job at encouraging healthy economic growth.
there was something like 12 years of unbroken economic growth under labour with record tax receipts(albeit with low tax rates) yet they still managed to leave the country in monumental debt and with a record spending deficit.
i am not a supporter of any party but when you look at the facts , there does appear to be a cycle where labour takes the the country to the brink of financial ruin and then the tories come and clean up their mess. it happened back in the 70s, 3 day weeks, union mob rule, imf bail outs, sick man of europe label etc, thatcher turned that around and when labour came back in 97 they inherited a golden egg economy. they did well for a long time, as blair had stolen the tories' clothes and never really veered from the economic policies of his predecessors. but eventually they let public spending get out of control and when the global downturn hit instead of being in a strong position to deal with it as you should be after years of strong growth, the country was back at the brink of bankruptcy, with labour vowing to spend their way out of debt...and the cycle continues.

Margaret Thatcher's Death Sends "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" to the Top of U.K. Charts
It's no secret that some people such as Meryl Streep remember Margaret Thatcher as a "pioneer," and others, well, not so much. And these non-mourners have taken their protests from Twitter hashtags (that convinced people Cher died) to the iTunes chart .
"Make 'Ding dong the witch is dead' number 1 the week Thatcher dies," the Facebook that sparked this movement reads. "I don't agree with the media portrayal of this 'great woman'..."
And the anti-Thatcherites did it. Judy Garland 's track from The Wizard of Oz now sits at the number one spot on the U.K. charts .
Curious? This is what a street party celebrating Thatcher's death looks like (and sounds like—includes some NSFW language):
It was not Wizard of Oz theme and featured no ruby slippers or boom boxes blaring "Ding Dong!" on repeat. Though it did resurrect the Specials' "Ghost Town."
If you're in the U.S. and raising an eyebrow at all of this, well, "Here's to Never Growing Up" by Avril Lavigne is at number 7 on our charts, so maybe we shouldn't judge each other's taste in music.
-
they have just cut it to 45% for highest earners
well it was 40% under labour for the vast majority of their tenure. when people are bashing the rich and claiming how well they're looked after etc, it's worth bearing in mind that the top 1% of earners in the UK pay nearly 30% of all the tax.
better to have 40% or 45% of something than be greedy and end up with 0% of nothing...

the point remains that the tories once again have made things better for the rich and worse for the poor. Cutting tax for the rich makes no sense whatsoever and only confirms that they want to look after the rich. Cameron needs to be assasinated.

From what i hear we the taxpayer are paying for the old hags funeral. A sum of 10 million. The fucker still has the last laugh.
Plenty people would be happy to dispose of her corpse and it wont cost 10 mil to do so.
-
14 pages of vitriolic back & forth and her name isn't even spelt right in the thread title lol
-
the horrible c.unt doesn't deserve her name correctly spelt...
alot of shite wrote here and in our news trying to paint a rosey picture of her, but im proud of us working class brits for remembering and showing those shower of c.unts what we realy thought of her..
its pretty simple, she destroyed our towns, theres one shipyard left on the tyne where i work all the heavy industry is almost gone from the north, same with scotland on the clyde or liverpool etc etc
same can be said of the steel works, mines and most manufacturing... now these werent dead industries either, alot were making profits and the ones that werent just needed investment to use new practices and new machinary,,, just as they did in Germany, they supported there industries aswell as encouraging the financial and servacing industries
-
well said Local hero...
-
This guy has great talent...she was always loved... ;D
-
exactly, just bringing the industry up to par would have been enough.
much could have been handle better.
lol if only it was so simple. the uk economy needed to move on, emerging nations were producing the same things with much lower labour costs, in part due to idiotic union demands pushing up costs in the uk. if those dying publicly owned industries were really viable, they would have been bought up by the private sector , like BT and the utilities etc. keeping people in non productive jobs with the tax payer picking up the tab, would have caused EVERYONE more pain in the long run.
what do you do if you're making plastic widgets and paying your workers £5 an hr and then someone else comes along and can make the same product but only has to pay their workers 20 pence an hour?
do you keep trying to compete in an area where you have no chance, or do you look for areas where you have the comparative advantage...
thatcher encouraged the uk to move towards higher tech and service industries where we had the advantage over the low skilled/labour cost nations.
when thatcher came into power the uk economy was a basket case with double figure inflation needing to be bailed out by the IMF in 1976(ala greece)
thatcher will be remembered(by people with any clue) as a hero for how she remodeled the economy and defeated the unions that were strangling the life out of the country.

The north was prosperous and the bastard crippled us. How can you call an old ugly bag who left familys poverty stricken a hero.
prosperous doing jobs that lost money with the taxpayer having to pay the shortfall...
where's the dignity in doing a job that like that?

I watched "The Iron Lady" yesterday... boring. Meryl Streep was brilliant though. She played Thatcher in such a way I really wanted to stop the film at times, she was so reminiscent of her.

homeless and people starving and she gets millions spent on her funeral...throw her in the north sea for the fish and crabs..

I'm glad the bitch is dead.

Social clubs throughout the north are booked solid for her funeral for epic celebrations. I really wish my local club hadnt closed down would have been a great night.

Imagine that. A bunch of poor northern monkeys with horrific accents in a dumpy dusty 'club' in industrial BumFuck town drinking cheap lager and pumping tattooed fists in the air. Sounds like the place to be.

Where's are the homeless and starving people in this country? Ok, homeless perhaps but starving? And it's the government's job to feed and house them while they irresponsibly spawn like rats without a single thought given on how to take care of themselves in the long term?

Precisely. Poor people can go fuck themselves. Sitting around bleating for handouts whilst getting more fat and stupid by the day. They're lucky they're getting anything at all. Always funny when the government puts the financial screws on, the BBC goes out and find the dumbest, most ignorant, thick fucking dole tosser and drag the creature in front of a camera to bleat and bawl on how 'unfair' this is and angling for sympathy. Take into account the worthless parasite does fuck all for the money it gets yet wants more and more. It's as Romney said and it rings true here as well. A very large percentage of people are convinced it's their birthright that the government should be wiping their dirty little asses and picking up after them. They're convinced they're owed something for nothing.
Luckily there's a new round of benefit cuts coming into effect today. That's worth a cold beer tonight.

It's obvious you're trolling for replies. That's not what you believe and you know it. Do a better job in being the devil's advocate, you can look in my post history for a start ;)

I truly believe poor people that complain for more can go fuck themselves. I never troll about that. Everything else I troll about.

Hang on, now it's poor people who "complain for more", not just poor people in general?
You have much to learn young padawan, much to learn ;)

As a London resident, you will have ample cause to regret these statements of yours in a couple of years... As a result of the benefit cuts there will be serious demographic changes in London. White Brits right now are what 45%? How would you like it if they were 33%?
P.S. Never mind the semantics, you're in for a lesson in syllogistics.

Burn her like a Witch...used to do that in the UK.. ;D

So you're in favour of continuing the current benefits package the unemployed receive whereabouts the need to be in gainful employment is ... not needed? If a squeeze on their 'income' isn't acceptable, what is?
I doubt white flight has any economic bearing. Cultural more likely.
-
do you think unemployed people in the UK live fucking luxury lives or what? load of Bullshit.. this is just propaganda from wankers like Cameron and some believe this crap. Sure you will always get a small % who don´t want to work but to generalize this is plain wrong.. >:(

The "current benefits package", LOL. You can't even live on that in the first place. Even before the changes that took place this month, the Tories cut housing benefit dramatically staight after they came to power. If you're single and under-35 you only get enough housing benefit to pay for house-share... never mind that in many areas these types of tenancies don't exist. So if you live in say, a one bedroom-flat that costs £700 and the council only gives you £550, you'll have to take the rest out of your jobseeker's allowance, which is *drum-roll* a massive £73 a week in average.
How much does that leave mate?
Even assuming you move out of your flat into a cheaper place because (as the current Tory narrative goes) you shouldn't live so "high" being unemployed can you still make it on £73 a week?
Your problem is you've read so much Daily Fail that you think every person on benefits is a mum with eight kids living in a Victorian townhouse on the taxpayer's expense. Reality check: these people are a tiny, tiny minority and they will always be there regardless. Most of the claimants are disabled or unwell or made-redudant or too old for anyone to hire them (do you know what happens to a 50-year-old who is laid off?) or too young (like straight out of uni), etc, etc.
The thing is you go for the easy targets mate... the immigrants and the jobless. You're thinking the way you're expected to. Divide and conquer. It's been going on for ages.

Excellent post, Many could learn alot from it, If only they would allow themselves to see past the spin and brainwashing going on.
Divide & Rule. How very True, and (sadly) very Effective.

Good points,so how do you solve thees problems, modern capitalism runs an ever growing level of unemployment as technological advancment in industry retires or decreses the labour markets, but as we are seeing right now, you just cant keep spending money you havent got trying to feed everyone. My view is very balanced I support welfare education etc, but I dont believe you should tax the working so highly to provide or they will lose the incentive to do so or if its a company find another country to go off shore to.

great post honest

Real shame Arce that you hit people with sense and they respond with silence, but thats what happens when you talk sense to socialists, what do you do after you have spent everyone elses money, ah silence. :)

so how would you solve these problems do you propose to put these people down or neuter them so they cant breed?
the problem with people like you is your in a good postition today but dont think about tomorrow, if you get sacked or if your job/trade becomes redundant what will happen to you then, when you cant pay your mortgage, end up in council housing relying on benefits to feed your kids, theres always two sides to everything
i cant stand supporting lazy layabouts, but not everyone in that position is a lazy layabout either
