Richard Jones is one of my favorite new pros. Where is he now? I heard rumors that he quit competing, he is engaged, fed up with bodybuilding, going to school, even homeless....what is the real story?
I hope he is doing ok.

i think the weider brothers are already helping him out ;)
-
I know he has left Cali to start his MBA. He told Shawn Ray that he has all but given up on being a pro, as it was/is far to expensive.
Did Shawn also say Rich's contract was cut when AMI took over?
Beef
-
Someone told me to that Jones is also getting married as well? is this true?
I really believed in Richard Jones that he would bring back the classic look...
-
Give RJ a year or two to get the game tight.
He be back onstage.
Future ambassador of the sport, while taking the pro stage less than 10 times.
-
yea but sarcasm said he only weighs 180lbs. ::)

About 160, but I admit I over dieted, I lost muscle in the process. I'm around 172lbs now.

Well, here I am........to answer the unanwsered! I love when people blow my e-mail up and say "you have to respond". There's always going to "haters, doubters, naysayers, and/or liers" out there so I only come to corroborate the truth.
NO, I am NOT homeless. I have a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage townhome. Oh it it is fully furnished with an office and an entertainment room. I have too many resources not to have a roof over my head. But I am looking to move far away once I tie up some loose ends here in Cali. Depends on whether or not I can transfer my credit over to another University out of state. We'll see.
YES, I am still trying for my MBA. But you guys and gals may know, that it is NOT cheap. However, it is something that only one other family member was able to achieve and I want to be the second one to do that. My brother was able to obtain his MBA from Harvard! Can't compete with that, but he is proud as well as my parents and the rest of my family. I have a sister that just graduated and is now a full fledge nurse. So, congrats to her. As this point in my life, my mind and my future AFTER bodybuilding has to be secured and I'm trying to do that.
As far as my contract with Weider, I can't really speak on that right now. But I will soon. I promise. There are going to be some changes soon. I'll let you know when that happens.
Now, bodybuilding......well, as we all know, this is an expensive sport on any level. So right now, my finances are keeping off the stage. By the way, I pay for school by myself. Some books are over $100 and you kneed them. Because of the expense, it may take me a little longer to complete my MBA than I originally anticipated. But, you won't be seeing me on stage anytime soon. Hopefully, sometime in the future. In fact, as far as my health goes, I just had my annual check up last week and I am very healthly and all organs are working properly. So, I'm happy about my health and don't plan on jeopordizing that for a possible 10th place spot and a 2nd tier show. Just my opinion.
As far as me being "engaged"....? Not yet! I hope one day that it happens.
Hopefully this respectfully answers your questions as to what "rumors" you may or may not have heard. But rumors will never die, just mutiply.
I'm done as I will not be back on to respond. So, have fun and be safe and respectful.
Sincerely with respect,
Richard Jones

bon homme richard
that's french and means:
good man richard
-
Rich, I'll trade you my MBA for your genetics ;D
-
It's too bad that in this day & age, being smart (like Richard) and being a top-tier IFBB pro, by their very nature can be mutually exclusive. :-\
Tell me in how many "sports" an obviously gifted guy like Richard Jones just couldn't "afford" to be a pro.
That's a pretty harsh indictment of pro bodybuilding if you stop and think about it.
-

u went to harvard ?

I will say one more thing.......there is NO money in this sport. People have to understand it's NOT like you're getting deals like guys in the NBA, NFL, MLB. They have the luxury of perfecting their respective sports because they have all the right resources and the income to do so. Stop and look at some of the "TOP" guys. There are only a handful that are making money from this sport. Yet, there are over 200 pro's today. Some you will never see because they just don't have the financial backing to be at this level. Darrem Charles has been a pro since I graduated highschool and he still gets shafted at certain shows. In my opinion he should be a top six guy at the O. Nearly, 14 years later he still there getting better. Nothing personal on Darrem, I just think he should be one of the highest paid guys. Six pro wins......what more do you want from a veteran?
So, I hoping to secure my future outside of bodybuilding by going to school and trying to break into the corporate business world. There is nothing to retire on. With the exception of Ronnie and Jay who have made massive amounts of cash and rightfully so. They're the best! In the NFL, the league minimum is $770,000! That is the least a player can get paid even for an inactive season. That's about $64K a month! A good pro, is lucky if he gets that in a year. Not to mention the women and figure pros and other pro bodybuilders with NO contracts at all. Shame, shame, shame.
I'm out.....got things to do.
Sincerely with respect to all athletes who are trying to achieve their dream but are held back,
Richard Jones

Man, Rocco is one of the smartest guys on this board.
I guess he is one of the 4% here that is able to write in full sentences. ;D
Anyways, i think it's really good that he thinks about his health and about his future after bb.
-
I have a lot of respect for Richard Jones. I cant wait to see him back onstage
-
back on stage?? isnt he saying up there he isnt going to compete anymore??

Obviously you can't read or have zero comprehension skills. He said not at the moment but in the future when he is financially stable enough to do it.
All the best Richard. You sound like you have got your head screwed on. You are a realist but also an optimist. Seems like if you want to achieve something like your MBA you will if you put your effort into it.

I was hoping that Richard Jones would be the one to make bodybuilding more acceptable to the public. With Richard gone bodybuilding is going to be in another dark age...
Come back soon, Richard....God bless you in all your endeavors...
-
VERY respectful man. He didn't say it point blank, but, is it safe to say he'll never compete again? ???
-
There goes the neighborhood....... :'(
-
So Shawn, does this mean you personally don't believe Richard is coming back? ??? You've got to know some details even if you guys are not best friends, I am sure you are more filled on what's going on in his life than many of us fans...
-

Richard, people have been speculating about what you are going to do since you don't really have a solid career path. Didn't you sort of fall out of the regular life activities (a regular job, going to school, etc) for a few years while trying to make it in the bodybuilding? You say "break into the corporate world"... Doing what? You were a LEO for sometime in LA is it? What happened with you getting out of there anyway? Sounds like you do like helping people and care about others' needs and well-being... So what is it that you are planning on doing? Back to law enforcement maybe? But wasn't it said somewhere in the BB world that they had dumped you out of there due to some drug smuggling incident? What skills and credentials do you actually have to be in the biz world??? If you meant after you complete your MBA, then sounds like you have long ways to go. What are you going to do in the meantime? Does not sound like you are getting a good deal with the Weider people especially now after deciding to not compete anymore...
-
Lol my bad

Richard can speak of his future plans himself, he knows the thread and he can say what he wants.
Regardless, I support whatever decision brings him happiness.

I'm thinking, you're not competing now so you can secure your future (school) yet once you get that degree why compete (on the pro level)? You'd be financially set. 8)
Have we seen THE END of Richard Jones? :'(

Ronnie agrees.
ronnie was natural even in his first couple shows... unless u can beat a polygraph then it would be ok i guess.... that was one of the questions they asked me..

Jaejonna - No I don't know him and what would I be jealous of exactly??? I am his fan just like many others on here. The post was about his future plans and possible career paths addressed to Richard directly. Why would you have to write something not relative to the subject anyway? Got nothing better to do than just hang around here in this site and post some stupid comments?

Questions, questions, questions......?
All I will say is this, if I feel like competing again, I will. If I don't, I won't. Simple as that. Doesn't mean I have to stop training and eat like crap. It's called life choices. As we all have them.
But I think there are other pro's and other more important issues to worry about in this world instead of worry about "where I am"? I am where I want to be. There you have it.
Moratorium!
Sincerely,
Richard Jones
-
ok, "Richard", ok, hahahaha. ::)

did we ever see the beginning?
Beginning with his USA win. ;D
Man looked INCREDIBLE!

Don't have to sound bitter, Richard. :-\
We were wondering, at least I was, whether you were competing again or not. You came off VERY impressive in the beginning of your "career" and then disappeared. GETBIG is a bodybuilding forum (so some say) :P so to wonder "where you are" should be no surprise.
-
ok, "Richard", ok, hahahaha. ::)
"OK USA"

hi,
Richard, I think you have the wrong idea about your current situation. I see from your prior posts you are planning on getting an MBA and then trying to "make it" in the white collar world. While your aspirations are noble your ideas of what an education will do for you might be wrong.
If you think after getting your MBA you are going to step in to a well paying management position, i got news for you, you aren't.
100,000 MBA's are awarded each year in this country. Unless you are good enough to get in to a top 20 school, you are wasting your time. Richard, an MBA is not going to be your ticket to get in to a good paying job. An MBA is just a credential that professionals use to enhance themselves in the jobs they ALREADY HAVE. That's the key right there. So, after you graduate you are going to be approaching 40 years old and have no professional work experience to compliment your newly minted MBA. I highly recommend you get a job NOW in a field you want to work in and then use education to advance yourself in that field.
Don't get an MBA just because your brother has one. Don't get an MBA because you feel yourself as inferior and have something to prove because you are african-american. Don't focus on the degree itself as being a ticket to get something, you have to focus on job skills. The degree won't get you a job, but your job skills and what you offer the company will. In today's world, you must be able to communicate complex technology ideas to others that can help the company save money, for example. If you can't do that then you will never make it.
just my $0.02.
CDM
BTW, Richard, i still remember the little confrontation we had at Max Muscle in 1997 in Orange, CA...very interesting stuff how you would know all that..

CMD, thanks for your opinion. It's worth exactly what you said......$0.02!
BTW, I have no recollection of any "confrontation" in 97'. It was 8 years ago and your still thinking about it? I don't know what happend or even care. Obviously, you still are bitter. Enjoy Mundo....enjoy! I wish you well.
Peace in the Middle East!

Getbig has a way of getting the pros feathers ruffled. You would think that all the GH would give you guys thinker skin. Sorry, couldn't resist. :P

If I may reflect upon this a little bit, getting a job and then getting your Masters is a better option. There are a LOT of specialized masters, other than more generalized MBA's that sort of "tongue and groove" from B.A. or B.S. In my office there are about 4 pursuing their MBA and they are only 1 promotion up from entry level, so they apply what they work to everyday life. Getting the MBA will take on about 15-20k on to their salary, not a lot when you think of it but certainly worth it, IMO.
Add that to the fact my employer is going to PAY for my MBT (masters in business taxation) I save 33k right there with the U.S.C. program, and going to night school looks mighty sweet with your employer come time somebody gets promoted, somebody stays, and somebody goes.
There are a lot of other factors though and where you live is one of them. If you are under 25, live in a relatively moderate area for housing market, and your parents might be able to help you, maybe banging through with the Master's is the way to go. If you live on either coast, Chicago, or somewhere like this and you are choosing between making good salary, strapping up and going to school as well, and being able to get in a house payment, take the job. If a house is 700k now it's gonna be 850k when you get out of school.
-
some dude i know got a crack house in baltimore in 89 for 35,000 and sold it 3 months ago unrenovated for 400,000
-
Man its a shame to see such talent wasted, richard jones is one of the most marketable bodybuilders around i am sure he could get a good contract with muscle tech or one of those companies if he really wanted to. I think he does not have the guts or a real love for completing because with his looks and talent he could make decent money from bodybuilding if he really wanted to.

BigAlski, pretty logical post. I'll be the first to say, sometimes school is overrated. Degrees don't mean much. However, it gives you leverage over others that don't possess them. Although, I haven't said where I work, I am happy and the MBA IS going to help. I don't do things for nothing. But, I just keep to myself and do what I comes to me or I have interest in.
You have to start somewhere right? No one just gets to start at the top. I'm prepared to start at the bottom no matter what degree(s) I have. But I will tell you that I'm willing to put in the time in where I work. I'm sure you have and many others in their respective professions. You have to work your way up in life and in any profession.
BTW....Disgusted, I don't have any feathers. Sorry....luv ya!
You guys have fun with this post. I'm going on vacation.......to Detroit for Superbowl! SEATTLE vs. PITTSBURGH! Leaving this week........
Sincerely with respect,
Richard Jones
P.S. I love GetBig....you guys are funny. Wish I had more time to post. I sneak on when I can.

True dat.....true dat! I believe it is ok to have other interests outside of any profession. I will state the fact that I love bodybuilding and have no plans on stopping. However, I have been staying in shape doing Extreme martial arts. That IS fun. Ground fighting is cool too. But makes you sore when you're getting twisted up by dudes half your size. That Gracie stuff is no joke! You all should try it.....but leave your "lifts" at the door cuz they ain't gonna matter. Everything hurts as we speak. Legs, shins, forearms, elbows and especially my wrists. Oh, and my lower back. But I'm going again tomorrow night for more abuse.
Sincerely with respect....and pain,
Richard Jones

I must throw in my 2 cents here-
An MBA is a tool. Just like a laptop or a screwdriver. It's a toolbox of skills and shrewdness, if you use it right.
It is what you make it. I was an elementary teacher 3 years ago, earning 34k a year. I decided to get my MBA. The exposure to new ideas, competitive minds, strategy, finance, marketing, and importance of tech aspects changed my life considerably. One year into it, I got a slew of tech certifications in my spare time and learned web design. 18 months in, I was teaching web design to adults and running a school's network. Now at $43k. 24 months in, I was running a website for 1/3 of a university and managing tech projects on the side. Hello, $52k. Grow, grow, grow. It's florida, where incomes are low, but I was happy oto be earning this just 2 years with my Bachelors in teaching.
Two months before graduation with the MBA, I went into business for myself. Built up a portfolio of clients and jumped. I no longer talk about my income, but I can tell you I am happy about everything except how much I'm now paying in taxes :-\
The MBA taught me about competitive strategies. In addition to many websites, I do two to three phone consults a day, and more and more of them involve competitive strategy/marketing. Sure, I build networks and websites. But more than that, the MBA taught me to read people, situations, and make money for all parties in every situation.
RJ, I'm proud of you for earning the MBA. You will never regret it. The confidence, skill, wit, and shrewdness you gain is priceless.

Guy has a great overall build, all comes down to total sacrifice with time and the pressure to compete at that level with temptation to use more of everything that got you their in the first place.imagine him and ray together at their peaks competing together.would have made good flex cover .good luck ,at least he's one jacked up mba student.

240....my man! Congrats on your MBA. I guess people have no idea what education can (not will) do for you. It appears you have worked your way up just as I stated in my post. You have to start somewhere. I'll never be discouraged to do what I want.
240....I'm going to PM you cuz i have to ask you some stuff and i have to tell you something.
Stay real....
Sincerely,
Richard Jones

good luck in whatever you do bro,btw who are you training mma with rich?when your 50 youll still have good kidneys and liver from not pumping your body with excessive amounts of bb drugs, your one of the few pros who think about their future health, peace

Richard-
1. Definitely smart to focus on profession/education FIRST, bb SECOND.
2. Why not compete in natural events?
3. Best to focus on only a few things - MMA is awesome, but it's very hard to be GREAT at a career, MMA, AND BB! I'd suggest just picking 2!
Good luck + I hope you compete again to show people what REAL (no-gut) BB looks like!

He completed once and didn't do too well - did he decide to hang up the trunks for good?

Nice five year bump.

they dont want great physiques like richard. they want big lumps of shit like heath

Great potential (Was heralded as the "Next Shawn Ray" if i remember correctly) a lil more size (legs) that's it...(was smart tho went back to school/get a degree..focused on career/making a decent living) shame he couldnt have done both (it's bodybuildings loss!)
-
He works with crime scene forensics apparently. He sucked his last sponsor dry, only competing in one show during his 4-5 year sponsorship and was finally cut. Every year was supposed to be the year he got back on stage but he never did. Don't expect him to ever.

He made a great decision ditching professional bodybuilding. He had great potential though. Back when I bought bb mags, I remember pics of him and he had one of the most complete physiques.
