Title: Who here goes to actual shows?
Post by: HowieW on April 25, 2006, 06:21:15 PM
I used to compete, but have just judged and been a trainer and fan over the last decade.
I get the impression that while many folks here do some form of training and like bodybuilding, VERY few seem to go to ACTUAL shows , even as a fan...I think this explains "it" :o

I actually live in Columbus, Ohio but have been to only one show, the 2001 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic. We were seated pretty far away and could barely see the bodybuilders. We had to look over at the screen. You can see the bodybuilders closer at the Expo and pay $10, as opposed to the $50 tickets to the show. I don't think I'll ever go to another show.

Not many Howie.

I normally get to 3/4 pro shows a year...and whatever little scrubby amateur things that are convenient.

I attend the East Coast shows when my schedule permits. I know the athletes look 100% larger and more impressive in person, but I don't really feel the need to experience everything firsthand. I'm content with the internet and magazine coverage w/ pictures, although I try my best to make it to the Night Of Champions. Sadly, the main incentive is an excuse to spend 3-4 days in the city, rather than to see the athletes in person. If I had known better, I would have made every effort to see the 2003 Mr. Olympia live. Ronnie Coleman was so perfect that night.

Back in the mid to late 90's I went to a shitload. Around 2000 is where the sport lost me, I have zero interest in watching these 260lb. oafs attempting to pose.

I do own several trailers, as a minority owner in a mobile home community.  It's a good investment.

keith, don't you have a bob chick poster to be lubing up right now?

I use to go to all the southern California shows, NPC and other orgs.  But I'm going to fewer and fewer because of the ticket prices and the restrictions on cameras.

What's up with the restrictions on cameras? Do they think the average person is going to sell pictures?  ???

going to shows or competing yourself doesnt legitimize you as a bodybuilder....if you bodybuild you're a bodybuilder....just cause you dont oil up in a thong in front of other men doesnt mean you're not committed or have heart.

I think, at the very least, an intention to someday compete is necessary for a bodybuilder. Its the primary factor that distinguishes bodybuilders from any average guy in the gym who trains chest and biceps 4 times weekly. You wouldn't call a guy who bench presses a powerlifter if he will never lift in a meet. The weightlifting, nutrition, and supplementation are the "training" elements in preparation for the competition, in this case a show. You wouldn't call a man in the batting cages a baseball player if he has no team and will never play ina real game.

In the absence of competition, what are you training for?? To look good for your girlfriend?? Thats all well and good, but the term bodybuilder is a designation that should apply to competitive athletes. Its not fair to lump the professionals, the amateurs, the serious yet non-competitive trainers, and lastly the casual lifters into the same broad designation bodybuilder

Perhaps some simple adjectives, "professional bodybuilder", "amateur bodybuilder", "competitive bodybuilder", "recreational bodybuilder" etc could clear up the confusion though.  :)

I've been to the SF grand prix twice (01 cormier won and 02 PRIEST'S first pro win!) and thats it.  Very entertaining, but it always seemed disorganized... but whatever, it was fun regardless, just needed a touch more professionalism on the organizer's part.

probably true

secondly, competitive bodybuilding isnt healthy at all, and there are some of us who have nothing to prove to others whod love to see us travel down their road of misery and health problems.  whats the point?

thirdly your baseball batting cages analogy isnt correct, because hitting in a cage isnt "playing baseball"....its hititng in a cage....building your muscles in a gym is body building, its quite literal.....flexing them onstage ISNT bodybuilding, its just displaying your bodybuilding which happened much prior to that day.  so in many other sports you need other players to define the sport (i.e. competition), but in bodybuilding you do not.

you can be a golfer and play by yourself, right?  cant you be a skiier and not have to race against others on the mountain? what about a cyclist?

there is no stipulation that requires these activities be competitive so the participant can thus be validated in someone else's eyes.

just as i dont give a shit what someone else is lifting or not lifting in the gym, i could care less who hits their lasix/clen peak on competition day.  if beating others on a stage is your bodybuilding motivation, thats cool.  if it comes from within, thats great too.  but just because you fall in one of these categories doesnt mean the other isnt a bodybuilder.

Except that you could get on stage looking like the back end of an AMC Pacer, or not compete and look like the profile of a '67 Stingray.

All total I have been to maybe 20 or so.  First one was Mr. LA at the Embassy with Gene Mozee around 1980 or so.  Went to one in FLorida back in 88 in Ft, Lauderdale or by there. The Cal a few times.  And many in Hawaii.  The Olympia twice.  Went to the Arnold in 2003
