I know Rolex, breitling, tag, patek phillipe and maybe one or two more. I was at some function and some dude at my table was pointing out watches that I had no clue were expensive. He said only watch people would know what they were, which kind of blew my mind and got me curious about the whole watch thing. I knew there’s watch people on this board, and would love nothing more than to brag about it so I can get more knowledge.

When I wore a more expensive watch it never got comments.

When I wear a less expensive watch with more mainstream styling, it gets comments.

Conclusion: I need to move to Monaco for watch appreciation yet I’ll be the poorest person there and likely treated as a homeless person because my watch didn’t cost 25k.

My watch gets looks when I go to the Caribbean or when I walk into a jewelry store.

My favorite ss watch. Rolex 126600 50th anniversary sea-dweller 43. I am a watch fanatic. I don’t wear them to show anyone but myself. Usually covered with a sleeve.  It’s really all i will buy for myself. It’s something that bites you or it doesn’t. I don’t like jewelry but i love a watch. My friends and family don’t get it but i do.

I had a 2531.80, the standard blue bezel seamaster pro. The goldeneye.

I liked it a lot. Omega had better bracelets than Rolex by a mile, used to at least. I sold it and bought a datejust. The omegas price has dipped a lot and my datejust has appreciated, so it was a good money move.

My GF bought me a nice Fossil watch last year, it was ~$120.

I get compliments on it all the time.

One of my co-workers has a nice collection of Rolex and Breitling. Big money.

I have two Rolex gold watches from my grandfather, i always forget about them. I should get some more information on them. They are both gold with small faces both of which i don't like, so i never wear them.

I only wear a watch when I wear a suit or a sports jacket. Then it's a simple Citizen eco drive watch. I got the one with a black face. I see it as a decoration since we all have phones.

The watch I use running is a Garmin Forerunner. It does more things than I care to figure out on the watch. When I run it gives me the miles, pace per mile; time for the run; heart rate and few things I don't care about. It has some advanced feature that I would like figure out but I couldn't figure it out even watching youtubes about it.

I have used the same exact Casio model to wake me up for work for 40 years. You can throw it as far as you can throw letting land on concrete and it still works. One time I swam in the ocean with it and worked perfectly. It's indestructible. When the battery would die I would throw it out and buy a new one. The battery lasts about 5 plus years. You can still find the classic model for various prices but if you search you can get it for $20 bucks. It tells the time of course, wake up alarm, countdown alarm good for bag work and a stop watch. The watch pictured is not the exact watch I got but close enough.

Rolex copied Omega's solid end link.  I'm sure it's better than Omega's now.

After I bought the Omega, I stopped looking at watches - quite the time saver!

I don’t know. I don’t currently own any SEL bracelet watches, but I have owned a 16610 with a SEL bracelet and it was OK. The SMP bracelet with the two button deployment and divers extension was money. My datejust is on a jubilee two tone gold/stainless and literally feels fake. That’s how thin and rattly it is

I talked to guy into watches. He said the counterfeit market is huge for luxury watches and many are duped thinking they bought the real deal. Happens a lot in the Caribbean and in Asia. He said China is behind most of it. When they break and they try to get it repaired they find out their steal of a bargain was a rip off.  The $5000 watch they bought for $1000 is a counterfeit not worth $250. In NYC in China town I use to run  into a China guy in the street who said he had Rolex watches brand new for a fantastic price. Nope, I wasn't born yesterday.

Yeah, the jubilee bracelet is not my cup of tea.

My son has a 2022 Rolex Sub with the SEL, and it's really solid.

Yeah it is and they make good ones but if your passion is Rolex watches wearing a fake will just make you mad. Also only buy from ADs. Grey market is loaded with scammers. Also buying grey you will pay 50%-100% mark up.

Cause they know I’ve been into watches for 30 years and always ask what I’m wearing and what it costs. Then when i tell them I’m wearing a 10k- 20k watch they go crazy and say they’re motorcycle costs less or whatever. It’s my thing and i would much rather spend 20k on a watch than a bike or boat or whatever. Also I’m far from rich but i will spend on the right watch cause you never lose money on a Rolex. So it’s an insurance policy as well. I remember picking up a platinum Daytona years ago for 35k off a degenerate gambler who needed cash. I wore it for a few months and then sold it for 50k that same watch now goes for 100-150k all day. Rolex is crazy. If you are lucky enough to get certain models which is extremely hard you can double your money same day. Daytona ss buy for 15k and walk out the door and sell for 30k within and hour.

That’s what got me thinking about this. My buddy has one he wears and told me he got it for $17k from a guy who was on the waiting list for the watch for a year. The dude didn’t want it so he paid the guy to get it and kicked the dude and extra $1,500. Anyways, I was on a Disney cruise and they sold used Rolexes on the boat at one of the jewelry stores and had his same one in there for $27k. I had no idea these things were like a commodity.

Yeah there is nothing like Rolex out there. It’s crazy. I bought a sub 126610ln from my AD about 6 months ago because he called and asked if I wanted it. I paid around 10.6k out the door and i drove to a grey dealer i in is and. Sold it to him for 16k so i made 5400 within an hour of purchase and he sold it for 17k next day. I remember about a year ago people paying 50k for the Rolex Daytona 116500 white dial and it was 15k from the AD. If you had a good relationship with an AD between 2020-2022 you could have a made killing. I also got a blnr on jubilee for around 11k out the door and sold for 17k next day. There was so much money to be made. There is still a lot just not as much as that timeframe.

What’s the best Invicta watch?

The 1953 looks good and has the Seiko NH35 automatic movement, well-regulated from the factory.  Pop a nice leather strap or Bond NATO on and it looks like the Goldfinger watch (if you squint real hard LOL)

Of course, it's no Rolex... ;D

Is there a website/discussion forum to get all of this information? It’s very interesting to me.

Yeah go on trf. The Rolex forum. Tons of info on everything you could imagine from watch movement to prices. They have sub forums on all kinds of watches like patek, omega, panerai, audemars, jaeger etc…

Hundred percent true.

My 16610, that I paid 6500$ for in like 2015? Shot up to nearly 17k value during the Covid. Same with my 16700 and 16803. The datejust is sort of stagnant. Doesn’t matter, not going to sell them. Especially the GMT. The old GMT watches are crazy valuable, could be a part of my retirement portfolio in 20 years.

Guy I used to work with did this all the time - he'd find Rolexes he felt were underpriced or just normal price, buy them, wear them for a year and flip. He basically said he did it to wear Rolexes for free since he claimed he couldn't lose money.

There were a lot of guys that invested in higher end 50k + watches, and got caught holding the bag when the prices tanked early this year. They lost money. Also an incredibly unique time in the market, obviously.

On a long enough timeline, you will make your money back though.

My newest Rolex is 23 years old, and they are all going for way more than they were originally MSRP’d at. I would have to look at inflation to see exactly how much, but still better than any other consumer product I should imagine.

The invention and popularization of quartz watches in the early 1970s brought the traditional watchmaking industry on the brink of extinction. That's all you really need to know about "luxury timepieces."

Rolex is often mistakenly credited as the first company to have come up with fully automatic/self-winding wristwatches. That credit actually goes to british watchmaker John Harwood who produced the first models (1920s). The mechanism was a bumper winding system; the kinetic energy needed to keep the watch running came from a "large" weight in the shape of a hammer that was attached centrally at the movement and could freely rotate around an arc of about 200-270 degrees.

EDIT : Here's what it looks like

Rolex did kinda modernize the concept by bringing a free spinning rotor system with a counter-weight that moves 360 degrees in either direction without limitation. A full oscillation is more energy efficient than bumping back and forth. I say "kinda" since Rolex actually borrowed the technology from another company named Aegler for itself.

On another note, l often hear people telling me they don't need a watch coz they already have a phone.

Fair enough, I can't argue with the accuracy of a device that uses both an internal clock system (quartz crystal resonator or a sillicone one), and a connection to GPS satellites atomic clocks through local time servers.

I find it interesting though that so many people have switched back to the inconvenient era of pocket watches....

If you’ve ever been to NYC’s diamond district you know what group controls the “luxury” watch market. They set the market and run the industry. Everyone else is just along for the ride. If you want to support them then go ahead and partake in the market. Otherwise, use your phone or a $100 watch, which will perform as well as any luxury watch,

Makes sense.

However, he was buying selling in the 5-10k range, I think.  Never mentioned the amounts you're talking about.

I think watches look cool, and can easily see how somebody could get into this shit hard.  I was offered a "tutorial" of sorts by this guy, but I didn't want to go that route.

It’s only partaking if you are purchasing grey market. If buying from an authorized dealer you just flip and make money and see you later. You can’t lose on buying a Rolex at a dealer on thru grey.

I like watches and while I cannot afford anywhere near the high-end, I do like some of them.  I have a couple of "smart" watches to keep track of total steps, workouts and heart stuff.  I also have some inexpensive watches that look okay but not ITG.

I had a Citizen Ecodrive, but it lasted only 16-17 years.  It had a monocoque casing, so it was not feasible to change the battery.

Lol, sorry bro, from what I’ve read after starting this thread, Breitling doesn’t appreciate. I have two, one I bought 4 years ago for about $9k that’s worth probably $5k and another I paid $3,500 for that I just checked them and they go for $2,500 used on eBay. I have some older Tags that are in the $1,500 range and a Movado I bought about 17 years ago for about $900.

One thing I did read when scrolling back and forth through the articles, they’re saying Breitling is more for a bigger rugged dude rather than the refined look of the Rolex.

I’ve never been a fan of big watches. For me ideal is 38-43mm and really the sea dweller 43 is the only watch over 41mm that I like. Mainly I’m a 38-41mm guy. My wrist is 8”, I like to wear the watch I don’t like the watch wearing me hahaha.

Luxury watches are worthless. The only people who are impressed by them are watch people. Hear me, I speak for the sensible people, we do not care about your dumb Rolex. No one can tell it’s a Rolex and we do no care. They are big ugly sundials and a joke. Absolute joke. The majority of us feel it should be removed from your wrist and smashed with a mallet. Not to mention you are walking around with a billboard inviting people to rob or shoot you for your watch. It’s also really really sad when you see YouTubers purposely showing their luxury watch on their wrist while they’re driving with 1 hand while vlogging.

If you need a watch, then get a classic style timex or fossil. Watches should only be used as a tool for keeping track of time.

Also, perhaps the idiot on here that can’t handle his worthless monthly subscription service to butcher box should use a watch to remind him of when it’s time to cancel the recurring charge.

Cartier often gets written off as a fashion brand for selling jewelry, perfumes, leather goods etc., but the Cartier 'Santos-Dumont' was probably the first ever functional pilot's watch in History.

Louis Cartier offered to make a wristwatch for his buddy, aviation pioneer Alberto-Louis Santos Dumont, when the latter complained about the pain in the ass of checking his pocket watch while flying -he constantly needed to keep his hands on the aircraft's controls.

As a world celebrity, Santos played a pivotal role in popularizing the wristwatch as a man’s watch. Before that, wristwatches were exclusively worn by women. Their dresses did not include pockets, so obviously, pocket watches were not an option and were traditionally considered men's items anyway.

Truly, luxury watches are absolutely the biggest piles of garbage available to purchase. Absolutely worthless as an investment. Most lose up to 50% value per year and you won’t break even after 10 long miserable years. It’s akin to a car losing value after you drive off the lot. But your fancy little sundial will actually depreciate and lose MORE value than a car the first year. And then if you don’t perform the stupid maintenance in a certain way, the pile of junk will also lose more value as a result. Imagine having to plan your life around when to maintain your stupid wrist sundial.

You become a walking billboard for getting robbed. Numerous stories of people being shot and having their hands chopped off in home invasions where the robbers were after the home owners luxury watch. Numerous jewelers have been brutally killed when the robbers stole the luxury watches. Numerous stories of people being assaulted and beaten into a coma because the assailants were after the luxury watch. Luxury watch wearers are seen as outsiders and lepers in society. Average people can’t relate to them and don’t want to relate to them. Average joe doesn’t even notice a luxury watch. So keep walking around with a huge Rolex. You’re the only person that knows it exists. Luxury watch manufacturers are laughing at all the suckers. The majority of luxury watches being sold are made from such recycled garbage that it’s laughable about how much the pricing is jacked up to take advantage of watch lovers.

Thank you and robcguns for the replies.

Appreciate the background too!

Cartier often gets written off as a fashion brand for selling jewelry, perfumes, leather goods etc., but the Cartier 'Santos-Dumont' was the first functional pilot's watch in History ( 1904).

Louis Cartier decided to make a wristwatch for his buddy, aviation pioneer Alberto-Louis Santos Dumont, when the latter complained about the pain in the ass of checking his pocket watch while flying ( he constantly needed to keep his hands on the aircraft's controls.)

As a world celebrity, Santos played a pivotal role in popularizing the wristwatch as a man’s watch. Before that, wristwatches were exclusively worn by women ; their dresses did not include pockets, so obviously, pocket watches were not an option and were traditionally considered men's items anyway.

nothing screams room temp IQ as a watch lover who thinks they’re part of the elite members of society. Yes, the sacred and heroic watch lovers. We are all so proud of you and your incredible sundials.

My first really nice watch was a Rolex GMT Master 2. I think I paid 3,750 in 2001 maybe? They charge 10,900 for one now. I have also had a real Omega, Tudor, Hamilton and a Tag. I have had knockoffs of Panerai, Breitling, Audemas Piguet and others.  Honestly I like my current Green Seiko Automatic just as much as any of them and it only cost me 600 bucks. I also have an antique Tudor I wear for special occasions.

Where I live gangs send attractive girls into upmarket bars to find someone flashing an expensive watch. Door and bar staff are in on it too sometimes. They get robbed on their way home.

One poor sap lost his life over a 100k watch that was actually just a replica

I don't disagree with him either. Watches and luxury brands in general are a huge scam to me and I even spent several summers working in a department selling them.

I will add though that watch people were probably some of the nicest and least pretentious wealthy people I spoke to at that job.

That why I do it honestly. I enjoy Rolex watches and it’s the one watch you will not lose money on. So I either buy a watch and wear it until it does nothing for me then sell it. Or I just buy them and flip them to make cash. I don’t use it as a watch, I don’t need it to tell time, I don’t show them off, I just enjoy them and the mechanics behind them and they are the best looking watch in my eyes. You can’t lose with Rolex or patek but Patel is a whole other level and you need huge money to play in that ball park and harder to get rid of cause of the amounts of money they are. But he just sounds like a miserable asshole on all his comments and he doesn’t understand what we are even talking about.

These Panerai are really nice if you want a large quality watch but not cheap. I had a high quality knockoff at one time. China town had all the good watches cheap like 40-60 bucks for every luxury knockoff watch you could imagine.

I b on that a platinum Daytona years ago when retail was 45k I believe. I bought it for 35k off a degen gambler and wore it for a short bit and flipped it for 50k. That was the most beautiful watch I ever had on my wrist. So heavy and bad ass colors. Not long ago they were routinely selling for 150k allday.

Yeah I really like it but can't spend that kind of loot on a watch. But the platinum is badass. Maybe for my 50th birthday I will get a two tone gmt master 2 I liked that watch but mine was stainless. 16k still seems a little wasteful for a watch but it will never go out of style you can wear it till death. At that price I would never take it off.

Two tone is nice as it is sporty enough to go to the gym or the beach and dressy enough to wear formal it's the best of both worlds. You don't really want a soft gold bracelet to scratch in gym having steel on the outside protects the gold

You can get nice two tone gold Swiss watches for less but yeah Rolex is extra nice

I would be more likely to go for a Tudor in two tone at this point in my life lol

I remember when I fell in love with watches, my dad always had a Rolex growing up and I always loved it but I was walking thru filenes basement one day when I was 16 and saw an ad for a tag heuer 2000 if I remember correctly and it was 499.00 I went home and counted my money and I had 350ish saved up so I mowed a bunch of neighbors lawns and did some other stuff for a couple months and got the money and when back and bought it and I loved it. From there I went thru a couple more tags and then a breitling super avenger, then an omega and a movado here or there.

Then I bought my first Rolex, a used 1978 datejust for 1000.00, and my love of Rolex started and I’ve studied everything about Rolex there is to study. I can talk Rolex with the best of them. The Ads don’t even know what I’m talking about when we are talking cause they know fuck all. I am impressed with mops this guy knows his shit about most watches it seems.

So I have a long history with watches and it was and still is not about the money, it’s just awesome that the brand I happen to love is a no loss situation so you can play and have no fear of loss.watches are a big passion of mine as much as lifting weights.

The scam with luxury goods is they intentionally restrict supply so there is a scarcity factor and then sell at an inflated price. This includes Rolex.

Just because you can sell a Rolex on for profit doesn't change the nature of what it actually is. It's a scam just like how something like the housing market is.

Lately, Rolex has been pushing this practice to absurd levels. As a result, many long-time fans completely lost interest in their products, which doesn't seem to matter to them at all.

The major problem with Rolex is that the company is owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation - a charitable trust that pays zero taxes to the Swiss Gov.

Consequently, Rolex doesn’t answer to a publicly known board with a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders. Little is known about their real strategies and goals for that reason.

A very succesful & secretive brand that takes advantage of whatever opportunities it finds profitable or interesting (opportunities that may, sometimes, only pay off in the long run....)

Rob

I had a really good conversation with you a few years back about this - don't know if you'd recall?  I had some money coming due to me, and I was thinking of a watch - I sort of settled on a Milgauss (liking the engineering) but in the end had second thoughts as I have wide wrists and it's pretty delicate (38mm maybe?).  Instead I used the money to build a small collection of Seiko automatic divers and Casio Frogmen (digital).  All of which have held or increased in value - nothing like Rolex though LOL - things like a couple of these Seiko 6139 'Pogues' - they just keep appreciating as time goes on due to age.  I've got a 6105 'Willard' too.  And the Casio's were limited addition so will only ever go up in price too (these are stock photos, not of mine)

I try to get JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) originals for these for the cool points where possible - makes import tax a bitch though

Legend has it that it was either Connery's or the director's personal Rolex on the set of Dr.No (1962)

In the novels, Rolex is vaguely mentioned by Ian Fleming in "Thunderball" ( 1961), and "On her Majesty's secret service." (1963) - a Rolex with "big phosphorus numerals" worn on an expanding metal bracelet, allowing it to be quickly removed and used as a knuckle duster (which is incredibly retarded...)

It is widly accepted as a Rolex Explorer I ref.1016, a watch that Fleming personally owned for a short period of time. ( the reference 1016 was introduced in 1963- Fleming passed away in 1964...)

BB related : James Bond is a balding man in Ian Fleming's officially commissioned image.

Correct Longines is just Swiss but Hamilton was American originally then got Swiss movements the cases and original companies history were American. I think they went out of business and then got started up again. But the Hamilton is originally an American company. You see lots of antique Hamiltons in American thrift shops.

I have been looking at watches for 2 days now need a new fancy watch like a hole in my head.

IIRC something similar happened in Goldfinger - Directors watch, but Connery complained the metal bracelet was pinching his hairy arms  ;D, so they needed an alternative and ended up with that undersized NATO - looks weird when you know to look for it

My grandmother got my father one for his high school graduation engraved from 1959 that I still have so I am partial to them. It still works great. The two tone black Bay with a diamond Bezel is nice and about half the price of a comparably blinged out Rolex but yeah I get what you are saying. Does it say I couldn't afford a Rolex or does it say I got a good deal on a Rolex made Tudor watch maybe a little of both. Truth be told I have a watch and our kids might like to go to college but maybe I will get lucky and strike it big in collectable beanie babies. But yeah all gold watches are 40k plus two tones are 20k and the Tudor is under 10 for two tone gold with diamonds and honestly the quality is about the same.

The black bay doesn’t retain value as well.

And I can get a 116613lb for under 12k any day of the week.

you have one kid, are you mental?
Im replying cause I really wanna get into this discussion about narcissistic supply and Brian. I know he wont talk about it, but Id like to hear theories on why he is so fucked up. I 100% believe his dad raped him, which in turn led to his lewd behavior to his brothers kids and a lifelong delusional thought process of what is said in the narc supply description. Ive NEVER, and i mean never come across as a more fucked up individual who thinks their life is normal.

I get the love of fine watches. It's quality jewelry and top shelf engineering. It's also a status symbol of wealth. It's still jewelry. It's 2023 and your phone is dead accurate. I wear a watch when I go to weddings, funerals and the few other events that demand dressing up.

Maybe this is the best approach to rid the forum of the kunt

He loses his mind when people call him a fag (closet homo self hatred)

he certainly thrives on abuse, not sure where he his getting his admiration from

Quote
Ignoring a narcissist can lead to intense reactions, including anger, manipulation, and potential self-destruction, as their need for attention is unfulfilled. Narcissists thrive on a continuous supply of attention and admiration from others, often referred to as their 'narcissistic supply.

I wanna know how his brain works. There's literally zero doubt now he has had and I believe still does have men bang him anally, or at least Em straps on. The anger level becomes self humiliation. He's also mortally terrified of everything and everyone. This is wild

I have a Nike wrist watch that I wear when training only to make sure my rest period is just right.

Also have my dead fathers Bulova which I should have cleaned and wear every now and then.  PIP.

I sometimes look into fancy watches, but never end up buying one, instead I end up very confused about it all and the meaning of life. It's like an extreme rabbit hole that leads you to the conclusion that you are either a millionaire or you are shit and shit is all you will ever get.
