Question on Liquid egg whites
« on: August 03, 2009, 07:41:39 PM »
Today I was at the Grociery store, and I noticed liquid egg whites where on sale.  $1.69 for 10 servings of 5 grams protein each.  So I decided to try the liquid egg whites, and they were pretty good.  Now my question is do you have to cook them, or is it safe to just drink them down ( for convenience )?  $1.69 for 50 grams protein is cheaper than all the RTDs.

I buy them and chug them down all the time for lunch.  I'll pick up a quart of fat free milk and then some liquid egg whites.  Costs about $4 at a grocery store, it's healthy, cheap, convenient, and pure protein!!!

Pasteurization makes the egg whites safe to consume raw and it raises the eggs to a temperature sufficient to allow the protein to be absorbed by your body – something not as efficient when eating unprocessed raw eggs ala Rocky.

There’s a certain bodybuilding site that sells “liquid” egg whites for either cooking or drinking (plain, or mixed with protein powder).
They are shipped frozen to your residence, and cost considerably more money than Egg Beaters brand, etc.

I wonder if they freeze well  ???  You could stock up.  That's a pretty good deal.

I would imagine so.
Costco sells Egg Beater and a generic brand frozen.
Egg Whites International ships them to you frozen.

I’m sure they don’t pasteurize them below freezing.
Freezing them yourself, you’d only be doing the last step they normally would.

Cool thanks for the replies.  A buddy told me that its best to cook them.  I just wanted to hear everyone's views on this.  What about absorption? I heard that cooked eggs are digested slower and therefore have better absorption, or is this just a bunch of crap?  I really like being able to buy a pint of liquid egg whites ( 50 grams protein ) for $1.69 at Kroger.  I will have to check out what SAMs has next time I am there.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe that since they're pasteurized the absorption rate is the same as cooked since the process brings them up to a "cooked" temperature.
