That's what the judges places higher these days.  Someone with Zane or Nubret's physique would not even get their pro card, and therefore bodybuilders strive for the "freak" look in order to get anywhere in the sport.  The judges need to be able to distinguish between physiques to place a winner, and if they went back to the old standard there would be thousands and thousands of such physiques (since the old physiques are much more easily obtainable today) and it would be impossible to for judges to differentiate and award a certain few their pro card, choose between which 20 or so will qualify for the Olympia, etc.  Therefore, naturally, each competitor strives to get bigger and bigger to differentiate and place higher.  If someone with Serge's physique was given their pro card over a typical winnner these-days, the majority of fans would be in uproar.  There's really nothing that can be done to reverse this.

Well said Bob's there are plenty of guys walking around with good physiques and the standard has changed to accomodate the BB who can "outfreak" his colleagues, however in trending towards this  freakier look the sport has planted the seeds for its own destruction, case in point; Olympia used to be on TV/PPV but now you can barely watch a decent webcast, BB magazine sales are at an all time low, and the negative attitudes and lack of support amongst fans, heck most people on this board look down on pros, whereas back in Arnold's day those guys were respected.  I also think that the whole gay for pay thing has contributed to a lack of respect for BB's, what happened to balancing a job and BB career

Yes, judges would place them lower (otherwise these physiques would be on the Olympia stage today).  Also, fans would be in uproar - majority would say how did this sub-200 lb guy with no legs beat the 260 lb guy.  Fans might prefer looking like these guys on a daily basis, but judges would place them lower.
