No, but it's saying something that those guys could infiltrate certain circles that wouldn't necessarily be interested in BB. Also those physiques were never the ideal per se, but it's safe to say that now the physiques have become a sideshow.
The point about women is that there was still some sex appeal in the "sport" back then. Even Lee Haney who was a pretty big dude in his day,even commented on how women would come up to him and tell him he had a beautiful body. Sure BB physiques don't appeal to all women, but I've rarely seen a BB with a nice face get turned down. In fact women usually approach them. 
You have to realize that contest pics in shape are not the most flattering which is why a woman will say that type of physique like Shawn's is too big. But watch what happens in a club or when they go out. Totally different reactions.
Now, the "sport" is totally fringe and has almost NO mainstream coverage. Back in the day, shows would be on ESPN and Fox Sports. Back in the 1970's or so it was even on Wide World of Sports. Now there is no television coverage and it appeals to a minute fanbase.
As I mentioned earlier, the TV coverage wasn't all that great, especially on ESPN. Coverage of bodybuilding came mainly via episodes of "American Muscle". On occasion, ESPN would air a contest (the first one I saw on ESPN was the Junior USA, back in 1990). But, like American Muscle, the contest would appear in the wee hours of the morning, unless you were fortunate to catch it, during one of the few times it aired during the day. Plus, the footage would be severely edited, with the music of the competitors barely audible. And, the broadcast of the show came MONTHS after the contests went down.
The only way to get the results of a contest immediately after its conclusion was to use an ESPN 1-900 number (1-900-PUMP-IRON, I believe).
The lone exception to this was the two years that the World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF) was around. For example, I found out who won the first WBF Championship on June 22, 1991, one week after the contest occured (June 15). But, that was because the results were shown on WWF Superstars and Wrestling Challenge.
People would much rather watch footage of a contest LIVE on the web (or wait a week or two to get results and footage online), than wait 3-5 months to find out who won a show.
As for the appeal to women, I realize contest pics are quite different than off-season ones. The point is that most people in the 70s found Arnold's physique just as "disgusting" then, as people find Jay Culter's physique now.
Heck, even people TODAY find pics of Arnold, in his prime as "nasty" (i.e. the cashier who rang up my purchase of an IronMan magazine, two years ago, with The Oak on the cover).
