I am in a quandry in my gym atm

The gym has 80-85lb db's then they jump up to these huge thick handled 105-110 dbs. Cleaning them is a nightmare.

Nothing inbetween. I am thinking If i start off on DB's doing multiple sets of 3-5 to build up my strength on them so I can work up to sets of 8ish and do my standinng shoulder pressing later in the workout as I seem to be neglecting DB work and only focusing on BB work.

Thoughts?

Personally if the bells are long enough, I'd Continental Clean(ugly clean with a slow up body drag) them into position and work low reps 1-3 for a while, and just try every workout to gut out an extra rep till I got back up to higher reps.

For me personally it depends on the size of the guy what I would consider strong.  I know guys who weigh under 180 who can squat over 700 and bench over 400.  Some people thought I was pretty strong and I guess I was compared to most people but I know people who are stronger than me.  (not counting any competitive lifters then there would be many)  But I am talking just your run of the mill lifter in the gym.  I have done singles with 405 on the seated military.  I have tried 2 and barely got it with a finger help and on the 3rd rep had to have the guy almost high pull it.  But 315 I could do easily 8 reps and probably 12.  And when I do my reps (as anyone who has seen me lift will confirm 100%) I go all the down and most times rest it on my shoulders and then go all the way up.  I do not count half reps or 1/4 reps.  In fact I think that is embarrassing when I see people do those.  Same with my bench.  I rest it on my chest for at least a couple seconds and if I am feeling strong even longer.  I stretch at the bottom.  The other day I was actually benching 315 while I had my cell phone on my chest on speakerphone talking to my daughter.  Considering how big I was and still am I am very limber and flexible.  I am far from how strong I was but I am coming back slowly and at least forward.  My weight loss has been alot slower than I wanted but it is still going forward.  i am far from posing for you guys but I am getting closer strngth wise to video tape me doing some bench and military.  Once I can do the 405 easy again I will video it.  Same with doing the reps with 315.  As long as you guys don't rag on me to much for my tummy.

By the way these lifts were also done 10 years after I competed and was off the juice.  In fact I was doing 315 military just 3 years ago.
I cant wait! :o good luck! ;)

That's awesome how strong all you guys are.  I was just reading Wendler's 5/3/1 book where he talks about how his goal was to do a military press with 300lbs.  A goal he accomplished in summer 2008.  If you guys don't know who Wendler is, he is a powerlifter with the following lifts:700-pound deadlift, 675-pound bench press, 1000-pound squat.  He should have just come on here and learned from all of you guys how easy a 300 (or 400, or 500, or 600) lb. military press really is.

The truth is, in most gyms it will be damn rare to find a guy that can do a military press with 225 lbs.  Hell, its damn rare to find someone that does them at all.  SS and I trained at a hardcore gym with REAL powerlifters, many of whom had legitimate 500 lb benchs, several 600-700 lb squatters, and one guy that just deadlifted 815 lbs in competition, and I only ever saw 2 of them do over 225 on a strict military press.  Most of you are just full of shit.

i dont see many doing standing militarys with 225, you would have to be on a real special diet emphasising alot of fats and probably alot of carbs too  ;D i dont see many fairly lean dudes do standing 225

I normally do 675 lb for 22 reps, but thanks to a severe shoulder injury, am reduced to doing 675 for 19 :(

1:43 in the video, God damn his form is amazing lol. I forgot how good he did it.

9 reps also, leans back a bit, but that doesnt really matter alot, he could get a few clean reps with his back 100% straight also.

I find it amazing that anyone would come on here and say doing a military press with 225 is very rare.  I swear to god where do you guys train?  I leave most of my training partners in the dust in this exercise but at least everyone of them were able to do at least some reps with 225.  Now 315 I have to admit is something other than myself and several others in Hawaii and the Barbarian Brothers I have not seen at any other gym and I have easily trained at more than 200 gyms.  But 225 is not a big deal unless you are just weak, small, skinny or train at a place like Curves or the local Y or Country Club.  Honestly you kids need to train at a real gym.  Johnnynobody and Swede and skinny weak twinks like them I believe they have never seen anyone lift these kinds of weights.  But some of you guys have to train at a real gym I hope,  I am 50 years old and can go do reps with 225 with no warm up whatsoever.  So if this fat old man can do it so can you
No Worries 4 me
