My Prediction For The Strikeforce Heavyweight Tourny.

After hearing recent interviews on this Tournament from Coker, this is a HUGE clusterfuck. Here are just a few things:

-Not sure if or where Barnett will be licensed to fight.
-Not sure if fights are going to be three rounds or five
-Not sure if they will end up with a separate "Tournament" champ from the regular HW Champ.
-Not Sure where each of the events will be held.


Could you imagine the UFC or any other well run sports organization "planning" something with all these uncertainties?

  You are making the a priori assumption that Barnett has declined. There is no evidence of it. Barnett actually carries 20 lbs of lean muscle more than he did when he beat prime Couture in dominating fashion. He hasn't fought top competition because of his failed steroids tests and not because he isn't good enough to fight them. His wrestling continues World-class and he is even bigger and faster than he used to be.

  No one is overlooking Overeem. In fact, most people are Overeem fan-boys who believe that he's the greatest MMA fighter on the planet. In fact, he`s the favorite to win the tournament.

  But what has Overeem accomplish to rate him so high in MMA? Winning K-1 doesen't mean that you are the best MMA fighter on the planet. We have never seen Overeem fight a top wrestler who is as big and strong as he is. What would happen if he fought Josh Barnett who is as big and strong as he is and got taken down over and over again? How would Overeem deal with that? Trying to clinch won't work with a really big and strong wrestler. And Overeem certainly doesen't have the BJJ to finish of a wrestler on the ground or get off his back and stand up again. Also, Overeem has never been tested against guys with lots of KO power and with stone chins. Put him against guys who hit really hard and can take a lot of punishment, like Carwin, Fedor or JDS, and let's see how he fares, He can certainly dish out, but can he take it? The guys he fought in K-1 are very technical strikers, but none has devastating KO power.

Overeem will dominate every single one of these guys, and hopefully will come to the UFC.  I know Overeem will not dodge anyone.

  Fedor is a little too small to defeat Overeem, but he has the tools. Barnett is the one guy who can do it. He is just as strong and fast as Overeem and has the World-class wrestling that is custom-made to deal with one-dimensional strikers like Overeem.

Despite the loss, I still belive that Fedor at his best is the best heavyweight out there: most well-rounded, experienced, the one who makes the least mistakes and toughest in pain tolerance and desire to win. I will only accept that Fedor is no longer the World's best MMA heavyweight when he gets dominated in the course of a protracted fight or KOd. Until that happens, he is still king. The loss to Werdum doesen't prove much.

  The only ones who wouldn't make a mistake in Werdum's guard are Roger and Rickson Gracie and Werdum would still stand a good chance of beating them. Making mistakes at this level of grappling is almost a sure thing. Like I said, even Rickson has been tapped! Why can't you understand this?! Werdum submitting Fedor doesen't prove that he's better at MMA: it proves that he's better at BJJ. Fedor beats Werdum 99 out of 100 times is he avoids Werdum's guard. It's simple as that.

Hi guys, just thought i would contribute my own thoughts on this as i have been mildly excited about this one since it was announced.

First and foremost, and i know this will irritate a vast majority of posters, but i do not buy into the Overeem hype as him being the worlds best. I agree that his striking is premier and he probably has a half decent ground game, but how he manages to pass a steroid test is beyond me. He has most of the tools but there are people out there who are always better - regardless of the margin, theyre still better. If he can maintain the standing position and take the center he is going to be very hard to beat.

Fedor's prime has come and gone in the blink of an eye, he maintained his mystique by fighting lesser opponents in his later years although he is once again stepping up to the plate. Age affects us all differently, do you really think Nog would have lost to Mir by any means in his prime? I think not even close. Whilst Fedor should have demolished Werdum he made unaccustomed mistakes in the guard against a man he should have recognised as world class in that position and he was caught.

Josh Barnett is the dark horse for me, his skills are probably still there but how will he perform come fight night - and if he is clean what effect will it have on his ability to control people? I think he will have a good showing, win or lose, but the big question is - will he be licensed to compete and then complete the tournament?

Werdum is in a position hes never found himself, and he needs to prove the Fedor win wasnt a fluke. The big problem is that he already stated that Fedor is the best and should have / will beat him regardless of a fluke. What does that say about confidence - he needs to realise hes now the big target aside from Overeem.

Arlovski, Rogers and Kharitonov are there to make up the numbers, i dont see any of them doing any real damage to the division but i think Sergei will bury Andrei. Silva however has always been a standout for me, ive followed him since his debut and was very shocked when Pele beat him - even more so with the Werdum fight. If he wasnt fighting Fedor first i would pick him for the final, i think he is excellent (not everyone agrees as its all down to personal taste)  but far from world number 1.

 The only ones who wouldn't make a mistake in Werdum's guard are Roger and Rickson Gracie and Werdum would still stand a good chance of beating them. Making mistakes at this level of grappling is almost a sure thing. Like I said, even Rickson has been tapped! Why can't you understand this?! Werdum submitting Fedor doesen't prove that he's better at MMA: it proves that he's better at BJJ. Fedor beats Werdum 99 out of 100 times is he avoids Werdum's guard. It's simple as that.

  And I never denied Fedor's loss was genuine. But you are just a Fedor hater. You never miss an opportunity to put the guy down. Hell, your avatar is a celebration of Fedor's loss. And rookie mistake? Yes, going into Werdum's guard was a rookie mistake. The way he escaped Werdum's first submission attempt was masterful. Werdum was on T.V here in Brazil and said that he was intimidated by how good Fedor's grappling was when he escaped his first submission attempt. According to Werdum, most BJJ black belts would have tapped there.
